    Once upon a time a king had three daughters, but the two older ones were so wicked - for they could not have the red skirt - that they would not even scare away from murdering their sister. Despite hiding their sister in a violin, a penniless wood-cutter finds her. During his wonderous travels he visits just the city where the king’s daughter went through this diresome deed. To the ungodliness of the wicked princesses the sad song of exactly the violin, in which they had hidden their sister, brings light. This is how the youngest princess is reborn and returns home, where she gets the red skirt.
    Made by the Kecskemét Film Studio.
    Directed by: Lajos Nagy
    Storyteller: Gyula Szabó
    Music: Kaláka band
    The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

    I think there’s another version to this tale but it’s very different in its setting. The other version goes that it was a poor man who had three beautiful daughters but it was the youngest who was the favorite and got all sorts of attention. The two sisters murder their youngest sister in a fit of jealousy and buried her out in the woods. Years later a magnificent tree grew upon her grave and a craftsman who specialized in fiddles harvested the wood from the tree and made a wondrous fiddle. However, whenever someone played the fiddle it sang a sad song, much like in this story but with more details and how she missed her home. People who bought the fiddle kept returning it for they insisted it was possessed by spirit and they didn’t want it bringing them bad luck.
    The craftsmen then throws the fiddle away where it is discovered by a priest. The priest had a history with music and decided to try it out. The fiddle sang and he knew right away the fiddle was possessed by a troubled spirit. He takes the fiddle back to the church and plays the fiddle over and over to hear the spirits story. After hearing the entire song he learned that the spirit was that of a little girl whose family comes to his parish ever Sunday and who had disappeared years ago.
    I’ll get to the end now - In the end he locks the church doors and plays the fiddle before the entire congregation where it points out the guild of her two sisters and what really happened to her. After the sisters crime is found out, the entire congregation was ready to lynch them but the fiddle plays automatically and begs for mercy on their part. Instead the sisters are sentenced to a lifetime of penance where they would look after the tree that grew upon their sisters grave, walk barefooted and ware black to Morne their sister. The fiddle ends up burned so as to free the younger sisters spirit and she departs into the next world.

      She probably understood that the reason they acted like that was because of their parents favoritism. Being her parents favorite was probably punishment enough in her eyes.

      The translation is...wrong

    • @glowworm2
      @glowworm2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@petehill7280 That's exactly what it is--basically the tale consists of one or two jealous siblings murdering the youngest one--could be due to a berry picking contest, a search for a magical item, a quest to win a princess, or fighting over a lover. It always ends up with the dead sibling being made into a musical instrument, be it a harp or a flute that plays by itself and exposes the murderer/murderers in the end. Depending on the versions, some end with the dead sibling coming back to life, others simply end with the murderers/murderer punished horribly and the victim does not come back to life.

    • @glowworm2
      @glowworm2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Doritos :space jam flavoured Not quite. The whole idea of the princess being a musical instrument is to expose her sisters' guilt and bring their unknown murder to light. Sure, she helped the poor man out as well, but usually the main reason for the transformation to a musical instrument is to expose the murderers-regardless of whether the main character comes back to life or not in the end. Some versions of this tale simply end with the murderers punished for their deed without the victim returning to life.

    Everyone saying the sisters killed their youngest one for a skirt, but probably it went deeper than that. Not the first time the girls were put in a competitive situation, probably, and they've had enough of the younger, prettier, smarter sister that their parents probably favourited. Not justifying it lol, but as a psychologist, I always try to find a reason behind a person's bad behaviour.

      @@eyasaied4401 well, there was this story titled "batu belah batu bertangkup". I'm not sure how to translate it.
      The story is about a poor woman who lives with her two children, a boy and a girl. They were so poor that they rarely eat, only rice with salt. One day, the mother came home from fishing and she got a fish that has eggs. She had been craving for the fish egg, so she took it home and cook it. She told her daughter that there are only 3 fish eggs. So each of them only eat one. Then, the mother goes to work. While she's at work, the daughter and the son ate the fish egg. The son, who is younger, told his sister that he want to eat more. The girl at first feels guilty, but she eventually gave their mother's fish egg to his brother. When the mother return home, she was so broken hearted and devastated because they didn't left any fish egg for her. The woman cried and ran off to a magical stone in the forest. There, she chants a spell, "batu belah batu bertangkup, tangkaplah aku, makanlah aku, anak aku tidak sayangkan aku," which mean "o magical stone, imprison me, eat me, my children don't love me anymore,". She chants that in tears. Then, the magic stone cracks open and the woman enters the stone. As soon as she enters, the stone immediately closes and eat the poor woman. When her children went to look for her at the stone, they only found a few strands of her hair stuck to the stone. They feel so guilty and sad, especially the girl because she betrayed her own mother. Then, they cut off the hair and bring it home.......

Many are native Americans, but there are some good examples of syncretism and mixing of native American tales with German, Irish and Anglo Saxon stories. If you are interested look up Linda Dégh who was a Hungarian folklorist and she emigrated to the US. She collected many stories and traditions of American folklore.

    If the two elder sisters ever went to trial for killing their youngest and I would be the judge, I would say to them:
    “That is literally the most idiotic murder motivation I’ve ever heard of. “

      @@eddiesalvador7943 true, but isn't the hole in the fiddle really small? It would take ages to stuff a small child's body.

    Did a quick google, the story is the poor man and his fiddle. Even watched the actual episode th-cam.com/video/Z-g0KcgwBMI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=M3vazExVFknNdUX_ . There's no favoritism, it's just a dad picking up his youngest child. I'm not saying favoritism doesn't cause problems, but in the case of this story (like many folktales) the older sisters "were wicked in nature". The little sister even forgives the older two and asks her father to not imprison them for life in the tower. The King and Queen agree to not lock the two away.

  • @queenramble5976

    so with stories likes these, I always wonder how theings could logically conclude for the evil sisters. Like with Cinderella - there's only ONE skirt, and if you're so greedy that you kill your baby sister over a skirt....(in Cinderella there's always only one prince, which is why I make that comparison). This story didn't address it at all, so did they kill the baby just to...get nothing?

    • @jacobcarpenter3744
      @jacobcarpenter3744 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends upon the variant. This particular story shares an ending seen in northern Europe. When the instrument, usually crafted from the younger sister's corpse, finishes singing, she appears. Her form is more radiant than ever. In other tales, the princess doesn't drown, but gets taken by a farmer or a miller who, alongside his own daughter, nurses the girl back to health. She travels to the castle and exposes the older sister's deed herself. Princess Erzsébet/Isabel has Princess Anna/Anne burned at the stake, perhaps with her lover, Sir Vilmos/William, also. They've a sibling named Prince Hugó/Hugh who doesn't do anything. Vilmos/William originally courts Anna/Anne, yet is infatuated with Erzsébet/Isabel. The love triangle finds the knight even pushing the blonde away to ultimately drown. I assume Sir Vilmos/William has been painted positively here, chasing after Erzsébet/Isabel.
