Toward the end ... nice to see the "vertical mall" right across from Nguyen Hue! I've stayed in the Prince Hotel a couple times. This is the part of Saigon I'm most familiar with. Also - if one wants to use the elevator in the "vertical mall," one generally has to pay a fee. Someone's ALWAYS in your pocket!

Any time you visit a country where 80% + of its people are broke most of their lives, expect getting played. Necessity is the greatest motivator.

80% plus of the population are broke? My friend have you visited VN and when? According to Asian Development Bank (ADB) statistics in 2018, the Poverty rate in Vietnam was 6,8% of population and was decreased to 3,4% in the end of 2023. And the development rate of 5,05% in 2023 (the 2nd in ASEAN). Maybe nexttime do some research before comment okay 😅

@@DarkstarDarth Really? First of all, you still think that VN has more than 80% of the population living in poverty, and I have shown you the truth. And most of us have jobs that meet most of our needs, so we don't need foreigners and tourists to come and wave money in our faces. We welcome you to come and understand the country, the culture, not to beg you, don't use small bad things to smear a beautiful country. If you take the time to watch more, you will hear stories when the Covid epidemic a few years ago or the recent typhoon Yagi caused many foreign tourists to be stranded and in trouble, but we still helped them with all our might, even those who were not well off. Those are all stories told by those tourists themselves (some of whom consider VN as their second home), so your lack of knowledge and badmouthing our country only shows that you are not a good and thoughtful person. We don't need people like you coming to us, thanks and best regards!

Damn shame you two had a few unpleasant experiences. I try to avoid the major cities when traveling. You are absolutely correct, when something sounds too good to be true, it isn't. Vietnamese have a saying that translates to "you get what you pay for." Stay frosty mates! Thx for visiting VN.

I'm an American who travels internationally and those travels have included Vietnam, Hanoi, Hoi An, Da Nang, and HCMC (Saigon) for extended periods on three occasions since November, 2022. One of the the Government's concerns is that people come to visit, but unlike neighboring S.E. Asian countries, they rarely return. Believe you've discovered why. While others mention how hospitable the people were, more have realized that the friendliness is part of the common "pig butchering scams" (like fattening a pig up before sending it off to slaughter.) One beauty was on TH-cam, where a street vendor sold a couple mangoes to an unsuspecting tourist for $50 USD. The Vietnamese currency is tailor-made to confuse casual visitors!
Side note: think we could see more of your surroundings and less of you? It appears neither of you are willing to "get out of the frame!"
Hope you have better luck elsewhere.

The people who ripped you off see you as just two more tourists with money. They dont care about how Vietnam is viewed by tourists, they care about the dongs in their pockets when they go to bed that night. Imo vietnamese have been promised so much over the years that many have a 1 dollar today is better than 10 dollars tomorrow attitude. Thailand gets tourism, Vietnam doesn't. Vietnam is a great place to live once you scratch the surface but as a tourist it can be unfair, boring and just awful, but the longer you live there the better it gets.

Vietnam as a whole, doesn't appreciate Tourists like Thailand. They have a take it or leave it "We defeated the French, Americans & Chinese" attitude. The first awful experience at the Airport Immigration waiting 1 hour to get out of airport speaks for it. They don't make things convenient for visitors but when shit hits the fan, like after Covid, they begged visitors to come back but now, things were going back to normal and they were back to their old aloof attitude but with the unexpected and unmeasured destruction caused by Typhoon Yagi, they will be temporarily sincere towards visitors again. The scams, particularly in the north, will stop for awhile until they recover.

Well I think scam do happen anywhere you go even here in the states. It’s not like I’m protecting those scammers but just need to be more vigilant. I’m a Vietnamese myself and all the restaurants do charge for wet towels but not napkins.

Oh wow. This is a first for us but the issue we had was no one told us that if we were to use the napkin we would be charged. Amongst other experiences we had it comes across as dishonest. No where ever has charged us for using a napkin. But, lesson learnt I guess and hopefully others can learn the same lesson as us with out the price tag 😅

WOW you road a bike all the way out to the Tunnels< man its not that expensive for a SUV, I ride my motor bike in Da Nang for Hours but by myself. Sounds like you don't know the difference between semi and full Auto rifles, They are Full Auto bro, I have shot there many times and I don't know what prices you are talking about, a full mag 30rds is not that much. Wish I was there when you was there guys, I would have helped you, yeah those who try to rip you off, they see you as an ATM nothing more,,, they are not your friends, remember that, if you think its bad getting the scammers there, go to Egypt. I was there over 40 years ago, wow how its changed in Saigon and Da Nang. I retired in DaNang so cheap ,funny to hear the accent again. Never heard of the Napkin scam??? In Japan if you go to a 7-11 you have to pay for the plastic Bag. I hang out with some old Vietnamese, I am so glad Vietnam is at peace, Between the Mongols, Chinese, Japanese, French, USA, Philippines, ROKs, NZ, AUST, at last at peace, one good thing the old Vietnamese tell me, we don't denied anything they did, and he said we did some F uped shit, but we did it to win and we did, this is our country. Now over 107K Americans have retired there, + me LOL.

Hey, hope your stay in sg overall was good. Aside from the scammers from the guy, I mean, it’s part of the experience I’d say. Everyone hits it once haha..aside from that, I’d just like to say the wet nap thing. It’s not a scam per se, it’s just not upfront or made aware to foreigners. It’s well known to locals that they are charged for them as they are kept cold in the the ice buckets. Mostly anyway. And they can range from 2k -10k in most places. This is a country where ice is being delivered daily after all. 😀

  • @DevineOne

Always research and shop around so you know the prices on offer. Vietnam is a bargaining culture so always haggle for prices. I lived in VN back in 1998 and back then you were charged for the wet napkins so try not to feel bad for that. It's just different cultures and completely normal there. Many people bring their own in fact as depending on the type whether cloth of paper, the cloth ones are washed and packaged again so people feel they might not be completely clean. But after a long bike ride in the heat it feels great to have a ice cold flannel to wipe your face.

Every place in Saigon charges you for the wet napkin. They arent free. Ive been living in Saigon for 10 years. This is the standard, even locals pay it. Its usually 2 or 3k, which is like 5 or 10 cents.
