That transition into Oreo’s solo reminds me of show band R&B funk stuff like Tower of Power, and it’s equally as good as anything Dream Theater ever did. This song is an absolute gem.

I agree. And the fact that this song is just 4/4 from beginning to end with no tempo changes should be as a hint to Dream Theater that no, it's not the complex time-signatures that makes a song. This feels more prog to me than anything they've done in 20 years or so.

Mindset is one of the most obsession-inducing songs I've heard in over 40 years. Because I can never hear it for the first time again, and have my mind blown by it for the first time, I keep coming back to this reaction video. It's exactly how I felt when I discovered the song. It's such an amazing piece of art.

During my countless business trips to Japan, I have seen many concerts, Lovebites, Band-Maid, Bridear, many others, and even this crazy band.
They are really good in concert, they have great energy, they are festive and playful a bit like the Band-Maid, even if the music is different, they leave you a very positive feeling.
Their musical talent is truly impressive.
I love Koga very much, she literally takes you away with her bass, in all the songs Koga adds a rousing and festive rhythm, and then she laughs and jumps in concert is really impressive.
The song Mindset is one of the best for me, and it gives a good idea of who they are, they are crazy.

I love this song, it's so funky, groovy, head banging, gets ya movin' rockin', organized chaos. It's one of my favorite songs of 2021 so far. Band-Maid is still at the top of my list, but these ladies in Gacharic Spin put out some amazing songs from time to time. This one caught me by surprise on first listen and has been on a few of my Spotify playlists ever since it released. Along with a pile of Band-Maid songs, Ambivalent by Trident, and a few by Bridear. (Ignite, Bloody Bride, etc) F Chopper Koga is such an amazing bass player, I know a lot of people love the drummer Hanna, but I prefer when she's doing other things like vocal and rhythm guitar. I cannot wait for their newer drummer to come back from having her baby, she's super cute and rockin' on the drums. Glad you listened to us and gave this one a shot, and was fun watching your reactions to this one. Clearly caught you off-guard a bit haha.

So glad you've checked out more Gacharic Spin! They've been my favourite band for many years, I'm a metalhead really but I like any music that has a good groove and I have particular soft spots for great melody and song-writing and they're absolute masters of effective melody and creative song-writing ideas. The fact that they can seemingly effortlessly flit between genres to back up their fantastic pop melodies with different contexts and ideas just makes them endlessly exciting and interesting for someone with my tastes.
Regarding that really cool 2nd pre-chorus where you were wondering what's going on, they transition from an Em vamp to a Gm vamp halfway through it and the vocal melody goes from B, B C D C B to D, Eb F Eb D. The Gm acts as a minor cadence into the C chord that is the first chord of the Em chorus and the Eb and F in the melody chromatically outline the target note of E they hit in the chorus once it bursts into the chorus. Really ingenious and effective musical ideas. There's a bunch of other cool modulations in the track, after the prog insanity of that instrumental interlude we end up in Dm, but then at the end of that section it transitions using a Bb and C chord (the vi and vii chords of Dm respectively) to act as the IV and V of F to propel us into the chorus which is now in Fm. At the end of that chorus we have a hard modulation straight back to Em to play us out.
I'm also really glad you picked up on how cool the guitar playing on this track was. Some people are completely distracted by how amazing the bass work is, and the guitar doesn't take a flashy solo or anything on this track and is just sitting back fitting in the pocket and supporting everything else that's going on so, so it's a little easier to overlook. If you focus in on what she's doing however you realise she's doing so much cool and creative stuff that's packed full of funky (and very fast) 16th note strumming, false relations (vamping on that E octave but sliding it up to F and down to D# at various points in the phrase causes interesting and very crunchy relations against the pure Em vocal melody in the verses), jazz chord fragments, embellishments and variations. Never too much that it's getting in the way of the other things that are going on but an absolute masterclass in tasteful, effective, and intricate rhythm guitar playing. Rhythm guitar often gets overlooked for how cool it can be, especially by rock and metal players where it often gets relegated to just power chords outlining the fundamental harmony whilst another guitar player does more interesting things over the top, but this really shows what can be done in a rock band setting.
Regarding the drummer/vocalist, Hana Sano, she does indeed play bass as well. Before she founded Gacharic Spin with their bassist, F Chopper Koga, back in 2009 she'd mostly been playing bass for various bands. She's also a highly skilled guitarist and general all round musical whiz. For the new album as current drummer Yuri is on maternity leave she recorded drums, 2nd guitar, and her vocal parts, and she's also the main arranger and composes a lot of the music although all members contribute compositions. There was a very interesting interview with her recently that dug into the composition and arrangement approach for the new album. If you're interested in that interview look up Gacharic Spin superfan @Gachaesthetic on Twitter, she put in a lot of work translating the interview for non Japanese speakers and has posted it to her Twitter. To get an idea of how good Hana is on bass and guitar (as well as her ability to turn household items into instruments) take a look at this Nirvana cover she made whilst bored in lockdown last year: th-cam.com/video/HbXmA7pvHbU/w-d-xo.html Not one to react to probably as it's only a minute and a half long, but as a musician I think you'd appreciate what's going on there.
If you dig more into Gacharic Spin you'll find they cover an enormous amount of musical territory and you'll never quite know what you're going to get from them. Their back catalogue has tracks that vary in genre influence from speed metal to EDM to latin jazz, but all recognisably them. Strong vocal ideas are king to them, the music behind it is just a way to contextualize it, and you'll find they often do major re-arrangements of older songs for their live shows (and sometimes as B sides of singles) to keep things interesting as well as show how the same vocal ideas can be completely transformed by the setting they're in.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling, I can talk for far too long on the music of GS. They released a live recording of MindSet on their channel that's 100% worth taking a look at as well to watch them playing this insanity live, and they also released another MV for the lead track off the new album which is called "I Wish I". It's also complete insanity (in a very different way) and they really go to town on the vocal arrangements on it. The bonus of having 4 members who are excellent singers is you can get really wild with your vocal arrangements if you want to.

    Cool and interesting react... again.
About Japanese bands, well.... I still do not know how is it possible to put into one band so much talent. 😳
Instant fan of this band just after the first 10 sec of this track.
The instrumental section at the middle of the song has probably been a nightmare to put the rhythmic in place with this tempo and the layering of all the instruments involved. This is insane. All the musicians and singers are absolutely beasts.
But the most amazing thing is that the "Live" version is very close to this one. And watching Hana singing and playing drums at the same time on stage is truly impressive, especially because her drum parts are not "a health walk" (not sure about this translation: une promenade de santé in French).

So happy to see you reviewing this amazing song from the no less amazing Gacharic Spin! Yes, Hana (drums here) plays bass, guitar, keys and some wind intrument too. They are all extremely skilled musicians as you witnessed - people sometimes tend to forget it because of the fun (and often comedic elements) they have on stage. Btw, they play perfectly well on stage too. The band has recently been rejuvenated thx to new singer Angie (pink - she's 19) and this new album is considered a new start (so the album is eponimic, and produced by themselves).

I’m new to this song, but thing I love about it is that it’s super heavy without necessarily being “heavy”.
As you said, some of that comes down to the video, which I absolutely love!

In Japan, we are not evaluated purely on the basis of music (sound). Gacharic Spin is one of the bands whose musicality is not properly evaluated. The leader, KOGA, was originally a bikini model. However, she broke away from the femininity entertainment business and started a band with her old friend HANA. Many years have passed since then, and their technical reputation has remained steadfast. Now, they have added a new member, Angelina 1/3, who is much younger than the existing members. While the old members had various skills and talents, Angelina shed tears of frustration many times as she felt she had nothing to offer. Objectively speaking, Angelina is still in the process of training to become a vocalist. I look forward to her future growth. Thank you for listening to Japanese music so seriously.

Thank you for your reply to my broken English.
I play guitar too, and this band's performance may be of interest to instrumentalists. The bassist and leader, KOGA, studied under a famous slap bassist and has since become so proficient that she has released an instructional DVD. Guitarist Tomozo has also released a guitar instructional DVD. So, there is nothing wrong with this band about technic. But the truth is, in Japan today, there are so many people who have graduated from instrumental music schools before starting a band. So there are plenty of instrumentalists who can play at a quality high enough to play in public. From "I have something I really want to say -----> I'll try playing an instrument or writing lyrics" to "I learned playing an instrument for now -----> What band should I join? What should I sing about?" The time has shifted, at least in Japan. In this context, these girls are an old school band. Would a woman who just wants to make money by only playing her favorite instrument get into a van, brush her teeth at a highway rest area, and go around to small concert venue? It's obvious that these women have "something to tell". I believe we should listen to songs of those who have "something to sing" and appreciate the performances of those who have "something to tell (through performance)".

I will admit a lot of their music is not for everyone they are all over the place which I really like personally. I know some ppl like a group to have the same sound every album, but I appreciate groups that just do what they want and make it all sound good. In this one I love Koga's bass all that funk she is dishing out just makes me think of some Parliament. I could really see Parliament and GS jamming together they both even do the crazy colorful outfits.

I think for me it's not so much about having the same style all the time as long as you're doing something interesting with your sound. These ladies seem to definitely keep up with that.

I've seen older stuff of theirs.... it's "sort of" heavy and at the same time not. But they are good at doing unexpected stuff. There are some "flavours" of other Japanese music but they are definitely their own sound.

From what I understand, Hanna and F Chopper wanted to be in a band together, what was needed was a drummer....so Hanna learned drums...... Woah!
It was kind of static having one of the lead singers stuck behind drums, so they got a new drummer and Hanna now plays guitar.... WHOA!

    • @nanakakitano9724
      @nanakakitano9724 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Pretty much, Hana had actually first played drums a little for another collaboration project called Heian she'd done with Koga circa 2005/2006 whilst Koga was still in The Pink Panda and Hana was bassist in Armeria. She decided to really throw herself into learning them properly when her and Koga formed Gacharic Spin in 2009.

    • @Darth.Fluffy

@@nanakakitano9724 . Thank you for the clarification. In any case, Hana has become a beast as a drummer. I think she could do anything she decided she wanted to.

Tomo-Zo is one of the most interesting and versatile guitar player from Japan. Highly underrated by many and like Kanamincho very unique and reminds of nobody else too. As a guitar player I would highly recommend their instrumental th-cam.com/video/VXAB83r0lbQ/w-d-xo.html

This band has undergone several mutations. Watch them for a while and you'll get what I mean. They're really high energy. They're also basically Doll's Box with the singer from Unlucky Morpheus. The gal who was the drummer and singer now plays guitar and there is a new lead singer. As I said, watch them a number of times and you'll get it.

Gacharic spin as a band has been around for a while now, and they seem to produce TONs of songs but came up empty in their early years. Then, a few years ago, Angie came in as their vocalist. And they start to put more Rock, or musical element more seriously into this band. I would say Angie actually saved this band from going disbanded.
