    Got the 4060 version from bestbuy for 1099 plus taxes in April 2024. Can verify that this ram upgrade is plug and play. Also used Marcum Reflect to copy the C Drive files and put i a 4 TB M.2. Now the laptop runs smoothly without any issue with 64 GB RAM and 4 TB of m.2 upgrade. Thank you so much for the video; gave me the confidence to pull the trigger.

    Just did this exact thing on my Legion Slim 7 (AMD 7/4060) only difference was i went for 24gb to total 40gb. Works great forme. As i understand, in that config (same here) anything past 32gb would be single chan....hmmm just watched your test of the 3 diff quantitys..maybe ill get a 16gb instead.

    I ended up trying this with the Ryzen 7 7735HS version of this laptop, upgrading to 64GB 4800Mhz, and since then the display has had issues with white flickering and other issues. Beware! It seems to be especially triggered by video playback such as TH-cam. So far I've tried disconnecting the battery and holding the power button to reset CMOS, and I figure I'll try it again while also reseating the RAM. Will report back with progress for anyone else watching this video wondering whether it would work with the Ryzen 7 model.
    Would also gladly accept tips from anyone who has had similar issues or has any theories about what might be the issue!

    • @facejoker1349
      @facejoker1349 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No. in this laptop(g14 2020 - 2023) only 1 sided SSD can securely fit. For example 4TB SSD with no dram is Lexar 790. With dram is Samsung 990 pro. U can add thin plate or sticker heatsink on top of the chips. Or reuse the heatsink sticker on the OEM SSD. Other heatsink is just to thick.

    I've heard that doing this hurts performance since the max it supports is 32, which is why most people go for 40gb, how has 64GB affected yours?
    Have you not done a comparison?

    • @jonaharagon
      @jonaharagon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      40? It comes with 16 built-in, not 8. It’d hurt performance installing anything other than a 16 GB stick. I don’t see why adding a 32 (for a total of 48) would be worse than adding a 48 (for a total of 64), but both would be worse than adding a 16, and both would be better than not adding any RAM at all :)

      @@jonaharagon Thanks for sharing! I don't have the G14 but I have my eyes set on one, so I wanted to know which RAM it was.
      1. How did you knew this one fits? By reading the specs? (cause this demands deeper knowledge of hardware, so if no one tested it before, I personally wouldn't know]
      2. I'm still waiting to see maybe what the next revision (2024?) of the G14 would be and if they will fix other problems in this line (I already like that they switched back to Nvidia, yet, I think prices for the 4000 series made this laptop jump from a 1000$ computer to a 2000$ one. Lemme know if it's correct. I still barely see supply of it
      3. Next models might not accept this "Crucial" 48 RAM stick, though...So I guess it's a possibility it might only work for this 2023 line.
      4. Lastly, I never thought coding would be demanding on system specs. I'd be glad to see how this performs with After Effects + Davinci.
      You certainly broke a barrier here of perception, for having to accept 32GB Max of RAM on the go. Having the option for 64 just gives oxygen. Knowing you can have space to work with. So thank you for testing this out and sharing!

    Also i noticed you did not disconnect the battery before adding the new RAM ? Is this because the battery was at 0 charge ?
    I am thinking to drain my battery rather than disconnect it as its too much hassle pulling the cable and routing it out of its position once I open the laptop... but maybe just draining the battery to 0 is a better idea ?

      @Freelancer4tehwin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As a general rule, on any well built laptop, the battery should not be an issue. It is always a question of what you feel safe with, of course. But, so long as you correctly shut the system down - no fast boot or anything - the board should be powered down on most all of the power planes, including the one for the ram.

    I always thought you must have the exact same maker+model of the soldered RAM so I never knew how you'd know which model of Ram to buy for the extension slot.
    1. Are there any cons to using a huge capacity Ram stick?
    Like takes more battery life? Or lack of dual channel?
    2. Any serious drawbacks to the G14? I hear the jet sound from the fans is horrible...

    • @jonaharagon
      @jonaharagon  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All DDR5 is dual-channel, because it moved the memory controller from the motherboard to the RAM module (which is part of what enabled non-binary memory capacities to be available with DDR5), and there are two channels on each RAM module. I do think that certain DDR5 configurations can use *quad* channel with two identical RAM modules, but I don't think this laptop or even most motherboards actually support that so YMMV. TL;DR: Shouldn't have a negative impact on this laptop.
      So far there's not much I can complain about with this laptop, it's handled everything I've thrown at it so far, and I haven't really noticed any major fan noise to complain about. I will say the keyboard backlighting is *terrible* quality.

The iGPU is 50-70% faster with dual RAM sticks, you may never need faster iGPU if you mostly use dedicated GPU. 7zip is ~40% faster with dual RAM sticks. All the 64GB works, only the last 32GB from bigger RAM stick runs as system has 1 RAM stick, because the smaller soldered RAM 16GB is allready full together with 16GB from that User upgraded 48GB.

      So, say I am RAM previewing a video in After Effects- it will only preview till 32GB? It won't use the extra 32GB (out of the 48GB stick) because they're not dual channel?
