Pep took into account his previous two losses when he did have DMs. It seems to me that he wanted to overwhelm Chelsea midfield and open them up with runs from Mahrez, Fodden and Sterling into the box. What he couldn't account for is Kante. This guy is amazing and seems to be at his best on the most important games. He destroyed every attempt to play through the midfield and then even made two very dangerous attacking runs. What a player.

He played Chelsea twice and got beaten twice should he have tried the same tactic again? Had Kante been injured or not performed on such a fantastic level it would have been a different story today. It is easy to plan with the benefit of hindsight but given the previous two results he suffered against Chelsea, I can see why he'd try something different.

@Dru Blué No they wouldn't, City is used to playing their high line and they couldn't do it this time around with just 3 upfront and maybe one player in the middle playing attack too, if they were gonna push Chelsea to play defensive and get shots on goal they had to delegate midfield players to attack which they wouldn't be able to do well with defensive midfielders and that tactic by itself is already risky because it leaves them open in the middle of the field where Chelsea can have anywhere from 2 to 6 players at any time. Either way City weren't gonna beat Chelsea in a game of who has the better defense when Chelsea is playing with 5 defenders whilst still having a good attack.
Yup timo despite all his missed chances is a gem to chelsea. His pace and run in behind pulls defender away, leaving his teammates with space to exploit. If he can improve his goalscoring ability like he do in bundesliga then every manager would love him in the team

When you saw the lineups, you knew Tuchel had him on the counter.
Tuchel didn’t have City on the counter . He rather outplayed them tactically. Werner’s 2 chances were clear incisive play through the city back line, none were counter. The only counter was Pulisic which wasn’t in the real sense cause they played the usual high line and the possession was turned over at the half way life then came the ridiculous marking from city making it look like a counter.
Harvetz goal came from one touch offensive football beating the funny high line press from city’s half heated press. They should be humble to accept that they weren’t good enough on the day and not for excuses.

Totally resonate with Craig's position. Redistributing defensive mid-fielder duties within the attacking players would only put a drag to the attack itself. No surprise that we did not see any more or less threatening results in the attack. The only chance from City that sticks to my mind was Ederson's long pass to Sterling, but nothing came out of that. Sterling made a wrong touch and the moment was lost.

Pep overthought it again. His biggest problem. Just because you lost a game to a team doesn't mean your system is wrong. Sometimes things just don't go your way. It is because other managers dont make the same mistake all the time but pep is doing it all the time.
I think it was a good technical selection. It's a chess match. Chelsea just managed better one on one. Kante negated everything with the high press which forced ManCity to clog the mid field and limit chances. This game was more technical than was realized. Two amazing coaches.
Do you know when you lose a chess game ? When you only react instead of going for a win. That was what Pep did. If you know your strengths - use them. Pep is doing the same mistakes since ten years. He lost every semifinal with Bayern against spanish teams because he for example used Rafinha only to cover Messi in a man to man marking- while Rafinha never had actually a place in the starting formation and through that he reacted - again - too much. Same with Sterling and the DMs. And so on and so on. After ten years you clearly have to say Guardiola is overrated if he only wins league titles with the most expensive team and isn't able to make progress as a coach.
There was no wrong with team selection by Pep. He lost previous 2 games against Chelsea with players like Fernandinho and aguero. He wanted to shuffle the squad and try new but in the end it didn't work. Tuchel masterclass tactics beat Pep, no question about that. Pep couldn't do much. Even if they had Ronaldo or Messi or Harland or Lewandowski, I bet they would have still lost the game against Chelsea. Tuchel set up a team in such a way that city couldn't make a single attack, they barely made one shot in whole 90 min. Credits to the players of Chelsea who each one of them gave 200 %

Yeah. Look at Chelsea's record against City over the last 3-4 years. This is in no way an upset. City has never consistently dominated Chelsea. Even when City was at the peak of their powers Chelsea sometimes found the way to win. This City squad is very very good, but the Chelsea has head and shoulders the most talented lineup of young talent in the PL.
Pep should have used the same lineup as used against PSG.
All of you saying pep should have used the same line up he has been using. Touchel would have studied city's recent lineup and map out a strategy against that. Pep might have wanted to avoid this by surprising him with a different package. So it is a 50/50 possibility. If they had used thier normal lineup, chelsea been used to that might have counted that easily. A new lineup might be a bit difficult to counter. But in this case the new lineup didn't work as expected.

The only logical reason why I think Pep came out with 6 attackers was cause he wanted to overload Chelsea back three and stop them from building play from the back and even commit cynical fouls if they try getting on the counter. Even though it worked in the first 20 seconds of the game with Chelsea backline being so frantic with their passes and Mahrez forcing Rüdiger to his corner flag, it didn’t just work well for city cause when Chelsea found little spaces, they make intelligent runs that makes it almost impossible to foul them on the break.
Especially the build up to the goal. The whole city players were running Mason down to hound him but he got his head up on time and spots Havertz run down the middle, by this time Werner has dragged Diaz almost out of the pitch! The space through on Goal was so huge leaving Harvertz to take his time and do the needful.
Let’s go back to my point again! If The city team had managed to foul mason before spotting that pass, things would have surely gone their way.. the entire plan got ruined when (no, not when city conceded) Gundogan got a yellow card and Ngolo was knicking ball off players and running away with it untouched. That’s when Pep’s “master plan” came crashing down.
At the end, it all comes down to personnel’s, not plan, not manager! But the personnel on the pitch and Chelsea had more hunger on the night
