Earliest Nerf thing I can remember were the nerf swords with little shield targets on the wrist guard. Interesting to consider that nerf and super soaker redefined what toy guns could look like. They really shaped the esthetic of 90s toys. The colors and the high tech industrial curves, preparing for futuristic war.

    • @miguelvelez7221
      @miguelvelez7221 ปีที่แล้ว +2

As a kid of the 80's there's actually some tragic events that opened the market up for toy firearms that were so brightly colored and also so obviously not a real gun in design. The channel did cover it in depth but the short of it is that there were some accidental shootings of kids who were brandishing the then state of the art battery powered water guns made by Intertek. All models VERY convincing looking from not to far away. Very detailed and colored to look like a pulverized black coating. I owned three of their variants in the realistic color scheme. Then... Poof. They were gone off shelves. The hottest thing in neighborhood play combat was just gone.
Thus we enter the Super Soaker and Nerf Gun 90's.Those two products filling a niche that had a big opening in it for some time.

What stinks is that we used to have those great super soakers that could hold quite a bit of water and shoot very far. Then Nerf bought up the rights and we haven't see. Any since then. I still have one of my original ones that I have used to get some hard to reach pigeons that keep crapping at one spot on out house. If I didn't have that super soaker idk what I would do to get rid of them nonleathaly.

We bought a few nerf brand super soakers when all of the summer stuff was hitting the shelves. The nerf brand super soakers are horrible. Sorry toward the end your anti-gun messaging became too much and I turned it off.
America doesn't have a gun problem. It has a parenting problem that leads to immature adults that stay frozen in their development as adolescents and never fully grow up. They continue to act like moody teenagers. You definitely don't want a temperamental and immature person handling an actual firearm acting on impulses, rather than understanding the long-term implications of using said firearm against another individual.
One great example of this frozen adolescence, is the show "Girls" and its creator Lena Dunham. She does not have the emotional intelligence of an adult, but wants to make adult decisions, yet wonders why her life is a trainwreck. Another is "Friends" that show is terrible when you take out the 1990s pop culture element. 6 friends act like teenagers while they are in their 30s and 40s. Much the same could be said about a lot of Sitcoms, including "Scrubs", "It's always Sunny..." , "30 Rock", "Community", and "Silcon Valley".
Kids have had toy guns, for as long as real guns have existed.
It didn't become a problem, until the parents became super disengaged in the 1970s.

Also, am I the only one who finds it strange that's there's never been any kind of nerf cartoon or tv show? You would think they'd have made one during the 80's or 90's, but there was nothing. Even the early/mid 2000's would've been a sensible time for one. Heck, talk of a nerf feature film would probably make perfect sense at this point.

Remember when GIJoe Classified came with Nerf . Everyone was huh ? , Did Hasbro want Joe fans to buy Nerf , is there Nerf GIJoe crossover, are GiJoe and Cobra just playing Nerf pew pew battles ? 🤷‍♀️ the Sniper was no longer produced and the Nerf rifle was very customizable . Nerf Gauntlets ShinGuards , Cobra Island Mystery .

I was 15 years old when the Nerf gun came out. My 7 year younger brother never had one I don't think. I had the basketball hoop, football, soccer ball, and ping pong, baseball. I do remember the Vortex football.

Okay, NERF won the copyright legal battle against imitators of Super Soakers and NERF Blasters, correct? So what exactly were the consequences of that legal decision? I ask because Buzz Bee Toys and others such as the producers of "X-Shot" foam-dart blasters continually produce foam-dart blasters that are compatible with standard NERF foam-darts. I've got a few blasters from the various companies that make foam-dart blasters and it seems that although the saying goes, "It's NERF or nothing," it seems to me the idea has more become "It's NERF or one of our competitors whose products are compatible with our foam-darts and since we're the only ones who produce refill packs of foam-darts, we're getting hooked up in that market anyway."

For a good while, Hasbro and Nerf fell out of favor with older collectors, leaving the newbloods like Adventure Force, Dart Zone, and a slew of others ruling the fields.
Until Nerf came out of nowhere with a half-dart blaster modelled after the iconic Strife. There's a reason the hobby's still known popularly as "Nerf Wars".
Kinda low-energy, Dan. Like you're not feeling the topic.

Or when you found out just how much of a weapon a NERF football was when it got wet??? You ever hit somebody above the shoulders with a wet NERF football from a good 20 yards away..... It would just about rip their head off lol. A wet NERF was NOOOO JOKE !!

Hasbro: Until all are guns!I actually currently have 4 nerf guns and about 200 bullet dart things. I say around, because even though I bought 200, I'm sure every time we play with the guns in our house, we lose at least 2 darts, might be down to 130, it's been a while since I bothered trying to count them. Definitely a great childhood memory, alongside Super Soakers. Might have to pick some of those up next. Wait. Can we still get Super Soakers these days?

The use of the Michael Rosen "noise" clip at 4:15 caught me off guard, I thought you people at Secret Galaxy only knew how to make fart jokes and Gen X humor, I'm impressed, hehe.

Secret Galaxy continues to be educational as well as entertaining. I always thought that the bow & arrow was the only Nerf product I ever had (well, that and the "Nerf Arena Blast" video game.) But as it turns out, we also had a couple of those "Nerful" toys in the house, (I particularly remember the rabbit-looking one on the skateboard,) though I never knew what they were called or where they'd come from - I never would've imagined they were linked with Nerf.
Another childhood mystery solved. Thanks guys!

Yeah Nerf and dart blasters are starting to become Airsoft as well cause of all the high fps blasters that has been coming out from other companies like Dartzone, Worker, and Zuru. Now even Hasbro has adopted the short darts standard that got popular almost 7 years ago. People say Nerf are still for kids but you won't let a kid use a 200~300 fps dart blaster right? At close enough range those can break skin and definitely blind somebody. For comparison 200-300 fps is paint ball and some low end BB/Airsoft velocity. IF you've been hit with a paint ball you'd know it hurt. But at least the rubber tip will disperse majority of that but still can be dangerous up close.

I modified a Nerf Spectre REV-5 N-Strike revolver rifle to house a Vive controller and painted it brown so it looks like a Fallout 4 pipe rifle while I'm playing Fallout 4 VR! Does that count as "Nerf or Nothing" ?

I completely forgot about Nerfles! I had a couple of those - probably played with them daily for a few weeks until I lost them and then completely forgot they ever existed. There were SO MANY new toys coming out every week,it seemed that in the 80’s KB and TRU were THE place to go and see what’s new!

Bonus Nerf fact: Nerf made the protective "wheel" that housed the camera used in 'Friday the 13th part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan' used for the POV shot of the head rolling down and into the dumpster.
