I belive it starts with something even more fundamental: Optimism: the belief that there is some good in you, out in the world and in the future waiting to be found. And from there comes the will to have the interest to create, observe, and curiosity to find that good where ever it is.
I really really really like this comment, partypao. Thank you for sharing that. I may borrow this comment for a future video and will provide full credit to you. Well said! ~ Mark
Yes! That's exactly my point, too! When I was recently asked to create a logo for golfing company, I immediately started thinking "golf ball," "golf clubs," and "hole in one/flag." I did a quick Google search and, literally, every single design on the screen had one of those elements. So, I decided to take the company name and simply apply the puckered dots of a golf ball to the first letter of the company name and it worked. It said golf without showing any cliche elements of the game. Running away from ideas that come too quick is probably the hardest thing to learn - but when we do, it can save a lot of time and headache later! Thank you for watching, Lindsay, and hoping all is going well! :)
If orange is the new black, then weird is the new normal. Working in a high school, I saw a lot of young people intentionally trying to be weird or different or just not like everyone else. Yet, in doing so, it was a case of the non-conformist unknowingly conforming to a group that abhors conformity. lol! The thing is, I've found that the weirdest people I know are often the one's that seem the most normal - on the surface. I'm one of those people, too. Working in corporate and public service, it's vital to be able to integrate into a culture where normal means survival from day to day (or even hour to hour). I've been able to chameleonize myself in that regard, fit into that culture, and maintain & preserve my natural weirdness to be who I am, yet also thrive in a community that, personally, I find very entertaining! Maybe that's why I enjoyed the corporate world so much - because to me, the most normal people are often far weirder than I could possibly ever be! lol! Thank you for checking this one out and sharing your wonderful thoughts, my friend! I hope ALL is well on your end, and you have a legendary smile in your heart! :)
hello M.D. Campbell, I'm someone that people see as creative and oftentimes they asked me to teach them how to be creative! and it makes me happy, but the fact is I am very wild when it comes to my creative thinking and not much of a systematically organized person. I find it hard to explain my point. so, i've been doing my own research on the know-hows and i stumbled upon this video of yours. I'm very inspired by this formula. if you don't mind, I want to follow your creative technique to help me help my friends do creative exercises. and of course, i won't forget to credit you as the source of my inspiration. thank you very much!!
Theres a special comfort for me in weirdness my body can be still and my mind can be free without judgement. When things are "normal" that's when it starts to wander. And I feel the need to change my surroundings with my imagination to spice it up and get inspired. The order in chaos and, the chaos in order I suppose. Thankyou so much for this video. Very enlightening.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and your kind words! I'm glad to read your perspective and it's nice to know that weirdness is something worth sharing! lol! Cheers!
Hello Mark it's good to see you back my friend I have gone through many drawing lessons while you were away and I'm very happy with my journey I am on I have even started dabbling in watercolors
I'm so late in finding your channel, but I'm glad I still did. I thoroughly enjoyed this illustration and all the encouragement you said. I'm a new fan :)
Thank you so much, Christopher Esguerra! I'm grateful for your time watching, but your feedback just made my day! Hoping you are well! And yes, I am still making videos - work is just all-consuming these days. I have a pen & ink video coming up this week. I appreciate your kind words! ~ Mark
Yay, a new video :D Thank you so much for your tipps for stretching imagination! It is much needed right now - at least on my side. I don't know why, but although I love making art, I do not consider myself as very creative. Sometimes I feel like I am thinking in boxes and when I jump out of it, I land in the next box. So these tipps come in handy and are not the usual blub which are already said and heard a million times. You know what really weird is ? - a good weird I might add - in most of your videos I can't shake the feeling I should take notes to never ever forget it , this vid being one of them. :) I hope there are more to come :D
Thank you so much, Terry Berry Creates! I understand the box jumping, because I think we all tend to do that. I tend to naturally think outside the box, but when I'm not in my zone, it's easy to fall into the same routine. As for "the usual blub," well, that's why I began a TH-cam channel in the first place. To share information I wasn't finding out there. I'm just glad it resonates. There's lots more to come! Stay tuned! lol! Thanks again! :)
I drink too much coffee when I listen to your videos! But I really wanted to say that your voice and way of speech is very relaxing. On slow days like today I'll sometimes play through your uploads on shuffle mode to get that relaxing feeling while always learning something new. Perhaps its weird to say like this, but thanks for existing.
"Thanks for existing." I'll take that as the greatest compliment, ever! lol! I'm glad you're enjoying my work here and that I can be a supplement for your ASMR fix! lol! Thank you so much and I'm grateful for your existence, as well! :D
Wonderful video! I have always been a literal thinker and as a result i’ve struggled with creative thinking. This video opened doors in my mind that I never thought possible! Thank you for helping me see “weird”!
Thank you, so much, Chantel Figueroa! I really appreciate your kind words and time watching. Glad you are seeing the weird for what it is and being open to its accessibility! Stay well! :)
This was an eye opener, I shared the clip with a fellow artist, liked & subscribed before the video ended. I had “wow” moments throughout. ThanQ so much
I first saw your channel today, and now you have become an inspiration to me! Thank you for all these ideas, and I am also grateful that I understood this lesson! If you don’t know what I mean, I am a child, typically 11 year’s old!
I'm really grateful for your kind feedback, Raafia Hussain! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts. Best wishes in your creative journey! Be well! ~ Mark
I have just pen down the details of your video (not just the 10 points but also how you see them) I have liked subscribed nd now left a comment....because it was that good nd helpful...please upload more stuff like this😁
Hi Isha Gupta! Thank you so much for watching, but even more for your generous feedback. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it and took something away. My goal is to continue bringing content like this, in many forms, to hopefully inspire, motivate, and educate others who might benefit from it. Have a great day! :)
Love the way you think! My son could and is considered to be weird by many, but I tell him to just embrace it. There isn't enough to go around to be sure!
Thank you, Linda Smith! I appreciate that. And yes, there's not enough authentic weird to go around. I was just talking with my wife this morning about a movie we watched last night, "Point Break," and how it was very cliché and predictable. I said how I love those movies, like Daron Aronofsky's "Mother," that are so bizarre and weird, that you think about them for days. As long as your son can channel his "weirdness" into a meaningful, creative output, then he'll be just fine. I tried to always teach more "weird" students that they can apply their weirdness in their work, but socially, weirdness isn't always well-received. Some of us had to learn that the hard way. lol! Best regards, Mark
Great work! For me most of my life I've actually been UNaffectionately called weird, and even to this day I'm still seen as weird by my coworkers for things I find perfectly normal. I've found my own community of artists and art lovers who are weird too, but what's funny is that when I'm surrounded by very artsy people there's a bit of imposter syndrome that comes with not feeling like you're as imaginative or creative as everyone else. So I found this video helpful. Its important to remember to be weird and proud!
Thank you, Sherrice Lewis! I really appreciate your time watching and your insightful thoughts! It really is important to remember we are weird and proud! lol! :)
I’m so excited for a new video from you. It’s been way too long ! I am working on an art studio soon out in my back space. Can’t wait to have a space to create :)
Haha, wonderful video, that comes quite handy for inktober. I usually feel quite inadequate and void of interesting ideas to share, nothing new to offer to the community. I will take note and look around me to find places where inspiration is hiding. ;-)
Thank you, Melanie HP! Gotta say that an interesting idea can always stem from something ordinary! I just did a project where my client needed a map of the US, so I took a basic map, tilted the viewing angle, and put the state plants on each state to look like they were growing up from the map - client loved it. whew! Thank you for watching! Cheers! :)
Ppl made death notes so I made a curse note.Curse the world however you like and I remember I had many people write entries in it and now we wait for the chads that predicted chaos
Weird makes you feel enlightened in an imaginative spirit. You tend to question the environment around us and the lives we live, and take that into perspective. Take Bill Wurtz for example, he makes many short but pleasurably weird videos, and when you really take a look at it, you will see how imaginative he is, how ambitious he is, and how he looks at everything with a different perspective. He also makes inspiring videos that are weird but tell a tale and give lessons. Then you will begin to understand 'the wisdom of weird' and you gain intellect and ideas and people will respect that. As Albert Einstein once said, 'imagination is better than knowledge'.
Found your account from the prismacolor scam video. You’re very good at making these videos and your voice is especially calming. I gave you a follow and I’ll keep up with your feed, thank you! -artist
Thank you so much, Haden Boys! Work has picked up in a big way, so my release schedule is off. I am planning a new video this week, so if you're interested, it'll be there for you! Thank you so much for checking out my work and for your kind words! Cheers! :)
Wow! Very nice video! I loved it. I'll try using the examples you provided (at least the way of thinking) "What if we do ...." "Why not ...." "Maybe a ...." Thanks again!
I was always seen as a good artist throuh my life, and even creative, but lately I've realized that I don't have as much of an imagination as I thought, or as much as I used to. It can especially diminish when I feel stressed. This video is very helpful for when I sort of lose my imagination to the stressors of life.
I totally get it, Hyperspace Oddity. I think being creative, every day, also has a draining quality. I've actually had to come back to this video, myself, as a reminder to think a little bit different when I'm tired or stressed. I'm glad you found it helpful and no matter how you execute it, I hope you continue your creative journey with sheer joy and satisfaction! Same for me, too! lol! Cheers! :)
Thank you so much, justtubingby! I agree - the ink does some funky turning once air hits it, but for me, I love it. As for 1+1=11, you're right! I need to put that to work for me! lol!!! :)
I have a pretty good imagination, and I even got called weird before (but I didn't understand what they meant), when I was more... open, or more extrovert, but I'd like to generate ideas faster. Way faster. Thanks for the video, it helped me and probably most people.
Wonderful piece and video with a bunch of awesome ideas. Oof! I ought to start taking notes ;P I tend to think very literally at the first miliseconds and then abstracting the thought right afterwards. Sometimes resulting in some really silly ideas, mental images and connections XD
you sir deserve so many more subscribers .. you talk real talk , true valuable meanings when aproaching the arts . you lighten up my mood and make me think things through . I seek for your videos just to hear this low-tone voice placing gently questions that we all have and giving answers in a way that makes you think and not defend your own . keep up the good work , I and we definately enjoy hearing you talk :) PS. one question tho' how did this coffee break thing came to be ? i mean .. I really cant make sense of it !
Thank you so much for your kind and generous words, Fedon Martz Movies. I'm grateful and humbled that you find my work appealing. It means more than I can express to you! As for the "coffee breaks," well, it's something I introduced a while back to separate the topic introduction of a video from the content. When a viewer watches, the idea is that they get a brief intro to the discussion, then the coffee break bit allows a moment for the topic to sink in. Then, right after, the discussion picks up and goes straight through. It sets a pace and timing for the rest of the video. I know some folks don't like it at ALL, and that's okay. Other folks enjoy it for what it is. I like it because it's something that helps me keep my timing on track. Also, the cup I use is my _Limes for Life_ coffee mug, which was from a fundraiser I started when I was battling a brain tumor. It's quite sentimental to me, and I'm happy to show it in most videos. Thank you again and I'm happy you enjoyed this one. :)
Hey bud, you're just weird! LOL! But thats cool. Weird may be the new cool! Fun illustration and great tips as usual. And I suspect the "rose" idiom may have its Shakespearean origins. ..."that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet; so Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d." Here's another idiom, "there's nothing new under the sun." Maybe, but I love how even taking traditional, even historical visuals, craft and techniques and applying them in personal ways can be creative. Thanks for the great "food for thought"... or should it be, "thought for food?" Now I'm just confused!
So many people who look at my work say, "you have such a great imagination," and I'm like, "well, so do you - just access it!" Because honestly, I think that's where people flounder most is in recognizing how to access their imagination. But, you're so right - it's powerful. :)
Then apply those senses and learn to _see_ what you can hear, feel, and smell, and then, once it becomes reality, go ahead and give your imagination a _taste_ to find out if it balances with the other senses. These are words.
The music at the end took me by surprise and scared the F out of me xD
Excellent video!

Dang if you're here I KNOW I'm in a good spot to learn!
I guess if you have an idea and you do it immedietly, i doubt that will be a good idea, some idea need to be polished(it's what they say)
I’ve been saying “I don’t know how not to be weird” a lot, this week. =>..

Another great video, Mark! Very helpful. I am going to try to start applying these ideas.
Same for me, too! lol! Cheers! :)
Your drawing is amazing! Great tips too!
Thank you so much, Adriana Silva! I'm delighted you enjoyed this one! Very grateful for your kind words! ~ Mark
This video was extremely helpful, I learned so much, and it really had me think outside the box 🤔. Thank you so much 😊👍!
So nice tips,
The red ink looks so beautiful in the bottle but when it dries, it turns darker 😕
Beautiful work. Thank you for the video 😊
(1+1=11)
Thank you so much, justtubingby! I agree - the ink does some funky turning once air hits it, but for me, I love it. As for 1+1=11, you're right! I need to put that to work for me! lol!!! :)
Thank you so much it helped
I have a pretty good imagination, and I even got called weird before (but I didn't understand what they meant), when I was more... open, or more extrovert, but I'd like to generate ideas faster. Way faster. Thanks for the video, it helped me and probably most people.
Love it. Thank you.
Thank you sir ❤️
You're welcome!
7 min in & you already inspired an idea I’m excited by!
10 min in and I got another idea I’m excited about! In fact, I paused for a while so I could get started.
@@mashae2382 that is so fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing that with me! :)
M.D. Campbell, what’s the best way for me to share with you what I make as a result of the ideas you inspired?
@@mashae2382 if you have an Instagram account, that might be the best way. Just let me know the name to look for.

That was excellent. Thanks
You are one great teacher!
Thank you, diana diana, but to be honest, I still consider myself a student! SO much to learn! lol! Cheers! ~ Mark
Wonderful piece and video with a bunch of awesome ideas. Oof! I ought to start taking notes ;P
I tend to think very literally at the first miliseconds and then abstracting the thought right afterwards. Sometimes resulting in some really silly ideas, mental images and connections XD
I will add all ten points to my sketchbook. Great ideas 👌
This is SO helpful! Thank you so much!!!
you sir deserve so many more subscribers .. you talk real talk , true valuable meanings when aproaching the arts .
you lighten up my mood and make me think things through .
I seek for your videos just to hear this low-tone voice placing gently questions that we all have and giving answers in a way that makes you think and not defend your own .
keep up the good work , I and we definately enjoy hearing you talk :)
PS. one question tho' how did this coffee break thing came to be ?
This video was fantastic. Thank you!
creativity is key to happiness
Hey bud, you're just weird! LOL! But thats cool. Weird may be the new cool! Fun illustration and great tips as usual. And I suspect the "rose" idiom may have its Shakespearean origins. ..."that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet; so Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d." Here's another idiom, "there's nothing new under the sun." Maybe, but I love how even taking traditional, even historical visuals, craft and techniques and applying them in personal ways can be creative. Thanks for the great "food for thought"... or should it be, "thought for food?" Now I'm just confused!
thank you
Thank you sir. You made my life
Great tips Mark, the imagination sure is a powerful tool that can be used in so many ways 🙂
So many people who look at my work say, "you have such a great imagination," and I'm like, "well, so do you - just access it!" Because honestly, I think that's where people flounder most is in recognizing how to access their imagination. But, you're so right - it's powerful. :)
great advice and amazing art

Cool . Creativity is Life
This is the most helpful video I've ever watched!
It's very rational and useful. Thanks man!
Cheers, Yura G. Thank you for checking this out! :)
So what do you do If your imagination gets so strong that you can hear feel and smell your imagination
Then apply those senses and learn to _see_ what you can hear, feel, and smell, and then, once it becomes reality, go ahead and give your imagination a _taste_ to find out if it balances with the other senses. These are words.
nice. automatic fan!
Great video.
Thank you so much!
