    I love how you focused on the legacy of Garry Marshall. After hearing about so many directors creating toxic/abusive environments, it's wonderful to know about and be able to honor the work of someone who chose kindness, grace, class, and fun at every point. This is utterly cheesy, but that is the truest essence of the princess spirit.

    in the books Mia's dad is alive and did what her grandmother did in the movie. What was funny is that at first Meg Cabot was confused why it was changed and then she learned that Julie Andrews was casted she was like "oh okay yeah who cares kills the dad" and I love that it's so funny to think about

    It really warms my heart to see how much fun everyone had on the set. So often, we hear horror stories from behind the scenes. I think it’s better to be a kind, encouraging director than a dictatorial one, but it seems like a depressing amount of people believe “art” can only be achieved through pain and suffering. RIP Garry Marshall.

      I really appreciated the positivity she tried to spread even though her personal life sounded very tumultuous. I do think the media is partly to blame because they salivate over any negativity or stigma that surrounds a celebrity.

    • @Indijana
      @Indijana 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@reikun86 I agree. I also believe, purely form observation mind you, that people like to hold others accountable for their behaviour. At least, that's what they'd say it is when in actuality they're just being mean. The fact that she had a drug issue obviously played a huge part in that. Some people can't accept that it's a serious issue and take their anger too far, others wanted her to succeed and finally get the help she needed. Ultimately, nobody could really reach her with any of that. It is quite telling that people are kinder with their empathy, or is it sympathy in this case, only after her death.

      I think a lot of different things were going on and I can't speak for everyone. I'm sure some people blamed her for wardrobe malfunctions or the scam artist she dated because people are garbage. For me, it was the way she seemed to disavow all those early movies when she was on her press tour for Les Miserables leading up to the awards.

    • @adomashun9839
      @adomashun9839 3 ปีที่แล้ว +112

      Ok, so I think I actually might know the reason for this. Anne was VERY popular during the housing crisis of 2008 (I think) so her face LITERALLY reminds some people of hard times. ( I also think I read a study that says people like actresses with slimmer faces during hard times idk don't quote me on this lol.) Not only that but when she won her Oscar for Les Mis, it was in the same year as Jennifer Lawrence who was loved for her "I'm so relatable eat food and swear" persona; while Hathaway was seen as to perfect and "uptight" look at their acceptance speeches and you'll see the contrast (aka Jen falling tripping while Anne doesn't). So yeah, I think that's what it is .

    • @DahliaKokoro
      @DahliaKokoro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I think adom's comment gets to the heart of it, it's all in the association. I remember being little and hating princess diaries cause the transformation seemed insulting really, cause mia was always prettier than most people and just got even prettier and it just made little me even more self conscious (and of course there's never much of a transformation in movies but being 6 I didn't have the life experience to understand that). And then Ella Enchanted, she was not responsible for how they massacred that brilliant story, but she was the face of it, and to a 9 year old who loved how smart the book was she was the focal point for all the ire. To a lesser extent but still relevant was how clearly adult Anne was playing teens repeatedly, which again was normal and not her fault, was just a huge red thumb I remember being annoyed by. Then Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Woof. Everything about that movie was rough including the white queen whose character design and acting were all around cringey, but I definitely understand not wanting to bring your A-game to that debacle. All of this is to say not liking Anne is logical, just not exactly fair. Her being in two poorly done adaptations is unfortunate but she didn't adapt them; doesn't get rid of the association. I think if either Ella Enchanted wasn't marketed so heavily or she had a really popular unarguably good movie before Alice people wouldn't hate her so much, she'd just be another Disney star who's had a mixed bag of good and bad movies, like most the rest of them.
      But this is just a long-winded answer to why people don't like her and no one has to agree with any of it, just sharing a perspective and trying to do so fairly.

    • @Sophia-cd2ci
      @Sophia-cd2ci 3 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      I think Anne Hatheway said in an interview that the reason they did it was that her natural hair just refused to stay in the curls for more than a few hours. They started her out with curly hair to be true to the character description in the books, but it was impractical to keep it that way for the whole of production so they made it part of the makeover. I totally agree that "ditch the curls to get pretty" isn't a good message, but I have less resentment for production team after learning the story behind it : )

    Having just watched one too many videos detailing Dan Schneider’s atrocities at Nick, I really needed this. It was so touching to see Whitney and Marshall treat their cast with the respect and care they deserved, as children and as people (yes, I’m crying at the pumpkin carving footage) - not expecting them to behave like adults, not condescending to them and underestimating them due to their age, but meeting them where they are in life, understanding what they’re going through, and treating both them and the source material with compassion and sincerity.
    Time to rewatch The Princess Diaries and cry some more. And also - I don’t know which one of them had the idea for Michael to put MnM’s on the keyboard as he’s playing, but regardless that shit is iconic 🍭🍬🎹🙇🏻‍♂️

    I finally got to see my name pop up in the Patreon shout-outs which is awesome because the Princess Diaries was one of my favorite movies when I was a little girl; the books also guided me pretty well through my difficult adolescence, but they are SUPER different from the films.

    Fun Facts on The Little Mermaid unusal to other fairytales it has a definitive author and is by Hans Christian Anderson. Jen Campbell made a great video on the True History of this fairytale where she talked about the fact that it can be read as an allegory of bodily difference and Andersons romantic love for his best friend Edward Collins.

    Whitney really gave it all in her production. The chunk about Marshall made me cry. He was my favorite movie maker as a kid. Also your inclusion of the clip from Music And Lyrics affected me. It’s not perfect but it’s got some of Adam Schlesingers best songwriting work(pre-crazy ex girlfriend w Rachel Bloom) and I also miss him so much.

I get so excited when I see a new upload from you because I have an anxiety disorder, my boyfriend works a graveyard shift & I'm alone a lot of the time. One night I found your video about The Craft (a movie i grew up with & hold so dear to my heart) & was absolutely astounded by the amount of time you took to focus on detail, aesthetic, & all the goodies. You're doing so great & i can't wait to see your channel grow so that you get the recognition you deserve for your art. thanks for making my anxiety-riddled nights a bit more calm. it means a lot. xo

    I remember, in high school, just sitting in the corner by myself. I never really engaged with the others because I couldn't really relate to them. I would watch them and marvel. One day, I overheard someone say something, and I cannot for the life of me remember what it was but I made a Princess diaries reference, mostly to myself, in response. I was shocked when the student, a male, got the reference, commented on it, and appreciated it. We became good friends after that. This movie is so much more than a romcom or a chick-flick. And Even if it is only that, those things are more than those things.
