I can’t tell you how great it makes me feel to watch your life unfold Jono. I well remember you catching your first sunfish off the deck at Elim Lodge when you were about 7. You were so excited, you were jumping out of your skin. As well as the countless times you and your two sisters tangled your lines together when we were out fishing on the lake. Such great memories! To see how you have scaled this up to your adventures today and to have found your greatest catch of all (Erin) makes me a very proud and happy Pops. Keep the adventures coming!
I've been binge watching your channel. Thank you for sharing who you are, it really makes your adventures even more interesting to watch. Would love to see an updated version of this!!!!
The chemistry is unbelievable. You compliment each other beautifully (Ying & Yang).. It's very nice to know you both better, thanks for sharing. Looking forward to a new season with BAO, Cheers !..
That was so fun, thank you both. I love the way Erin looks at you Jon, she is so in love. I love how you look at and treat Erin, you are so in love with her. You guys are good together and good for each other.
You two are a very fun couple. OMG, Erin’s parents sound like incredible explorers also. How great would it have been to have their adventures on video. That thought should make you realize how much you will appreciate your videos later.
Thank the both of you for sharing your journeys. Beautiful area and love the wildlife. Your both entertaining and down to earth. Love how you show the mapping of your trips and sharing the history of the locations.
I found your channel, maybe a week ago, or two, and I've been impressed. I have binge watch ed you from the very first video you made, progressively from the bottom up. I have many others to watch, and, I technically should not have seen this video (if I watched in chronological order), but you two are phenomenal together. Erin is a true Canadian bush girl. I am impressed, not because she's a woman outdoors, but, because she looks so much at home there. I have my wife watching you now, and she also loves the videos. They are novel, honest, and refreshing. You are the fore-runners of a new movement. I'm an old fart now, and I have done a few adventures in my youth, and have bushwacked many, many placed, not for an audience, but, just to see what lies ahead, and everything in between. You two have that same wanderlust. That is great to me. I wish you both many experiences together, and may you both find the solace of nature to help you grow together, as it was intended. Thank you for your channel. Keep them experiences coming. PS. Be careful out there, and take in a few more needful bushcraft skills to enhance your wilderness safety and experiences. (Advice from an old fart, take it or leave it ;-) ).
You are obviously perfect together. Virtually everything in common, both with great work ethics, and love of outdoors. Glad I've discovered your channel, especially after getting to know you both a bit. Thanks for sharing.
Fun video! You know if we're here we are all pretty much kindred spirits bound by adventure, outdoors, and fish. Just so appreciative that you guys have taken the time to share your adventures with us, because we're all in some state of waiting for our next times to be out there, waiting for those vacation days to hit, waiting for the spring bite to start, or even just waiting for the weekend get aways, and it's great to be able to watch quality sincere chronicles to get us though those lulls when we're not out there when we're longing to be out there. I've been along for a while and am glad to see the channel grow and still stay true to how it's been and always look forward to the next adventures! Thanks guys!
Thank you Erin, for touching on the subject of independent women!! Especially, the "John let's me" part. Imagine what we could accomplish if women just believed that they can do it. What a world this would be. Thank you for taking the time to answer all those questions! Stay safe on all your travels
Thanks a lot Michele :) Well said. Our capabilities as men and women are extremely similar...but a lot of what we do is dictated by gender roles and social norms. Gender roles are out the window for us. I cook and clean more because I'm more of a planner and detail-oriented, and she's the handy one who loves axes lol...we just act according to our skill sets and it makes us a stronger team.
Erin is such a wonderful role model, strong, smart and not afraid to show it. Honest and solid these two. What a partnership! Much love and admiration for you both 🐠🇨🇦 🛶
Really enjoyed the Q&A guys! Thanks for sharing so openly. I remember after watching the first video with Erin in it, commenting that she was a keeper and to hang on to her. I'm glad you have.....you both make a great team! Take care both of you.....and keep up the good work cos it's appreciated. Regards from Oz!
I believe you're becoming one of the ten best outdoors yt. Channel. Keep it real and we'll be fine. It's most enjoyable. Thanks for the effort of documenting your trips.
Thank You for showing and revealing so much of your personal lives. I’m from Texas, but I just found you and I am very so impressed with both of you. Erin is a Super Woman! Love your strength and tenacity, You are a Rock Erin! And John has such a sweet soul and he’s so knowledgeable about so many Subjects. You are a Great Team!
OK...The MAIN reason I subscribe to this channel is these two are PURE in the truest form, Yea I watched Alexa outdoors with her dog and her plastic water bottles and preaching about the saving the earth in her backyard type of videos and the channels with the underlying teachings of the outdoors in their very local locations, This channel teaches the survival of the back country without having to explain, like you are part of the adventure. Keep up the great work you guys! There are us out here who just enjoy the content and you both as a couple and as a team! John, never underestimate the wonderful companionship you have in your partner!
Thank you so much Thomas!! I think some people like an explanation and some prefer to experience things vicariously and draw their own learnings from it :) RE: Alexis Outdoors, I guess there's more explaining in their content but evidently a lot of people love her style (including Erin and I😝), and having camped with them this winter I can tell you that Careena & Ryan are such lovely and genuine people :)
Backcountry Angling Ontario - I will say that none of them have yet reached your videography and editing skills. You are leaps and bounds better than them in my opinion. It’s all based on preference. They may be very nice people, but I find their videos generic. That’s just my humble opinion for what its worth!
Too kind brother, truly appreciate all your support over the last year+. Definitely based on preference...maybe I'm my own worst critic but I often look at other videos and think how much I can improve. Take a channel like Tumblehome. Guy is a pro, I'm a hack. I try to record the best content I can and I'm lucky to have such a beautiful place to record, but at home my editing is extremely basic.
Love your videos and love that the 2 of you are your picture for your channel!! Don't let the hateful people out there get to you or influence what you do and how you do it!! You 2 are AWESOME and thank you so much for sharing your adventures and a part of your lives with us!! Love and Peace to you!!!
I came across your channel quite by chance. I was watching something by Jason Eke, and he gave Backcountry Angling Ontario a shoutout regarding quality maps I believe. So, I googled Backcountry Angling and fell in love with your videos, your quest for adventure, love of the backcountry, your pure enjoyment of being in nature and the stunning landscape and wildlife that you capture. I really enjoyed watching this getting to know you video -you two are so refreshing and honest. I look forward to watching the rest of your adventures. Thanks.
Hi John and Erin, I am a fly fisherman, and have taught flyfishing, fly tying, and casting to several people. I have published in flyfishing magazines and am currently doing a final edit in a book on fly tying materials. I started as a spin fisherman when I was young and transitioned to fly fishing as a teen. I see that you release most of the fish you catch and treat them humanly. Once a person catches a fish using fly tackle they are usually hooked for life. Pun intended. If you are interested in learning I would be glad to come visit you and spend some time teaching you the basics. I'm retired and have the time and resources to do this kind of thing. I would be very surprised if afterwards you did not convert and in the process convert many of your viewers. My only aim is to increase fishing enjoyment of the fishing experience. The excitement and look on people's faces the first time they catch a fish on a fly is priceless. I also share your love of photography and exploration. Keep the great content coming and, have fun.
Love this video. It's nice to see other people so down to earth. Thank you for giving us such a positive and beautiful side of this world . Keep it up!
Thank you for sharing that! It's great to get to know more about you two! There's a few reasons I love watching your videos. First, you keep things simple, it's about the trip, the scenery, the fishing, and the adventure. And I love that you are both great patrons of the outdoors, leaving no trace, and sustainability. Keep up the great videos, and remember that for every one troll that makes a nasty comment, there's one hundred people that loved what they saw and may have not commented. When I watch on my Roku it's hard to comment and like. Looking forward to what's coming up this year!!
This was just amazing. Loved every bit of this. I find you’s both entertaining and informative and true to yourselves which is why I watch you’s. Don’t change a thing. Looking forward to what you’s bring next.
Thank you so much for sharing about yourselves like this. This was in no way boring, just the opposite. I hope you realize how important your videos can be for people who could never do what you two do for various reasons, physical disability or work/ family issues. You take us with you and it is very special, especially for the spirit! Thank you.
Of all the channels that I watch on TH-cam yours has captured me more than any other. I now have this deep and overwhelming desire to paddle the lakes of Canada. Down here in Australia we are pretty short on water so it makes me so happy to see so much water and beautiful scenery. I'm very much looking forward to your coming summer videos.
That means a lot, thanks so much ATO! I hear ya, we're totally blessed with H2O here...a paddler's paradise. Hope you can make that dream come true someday. I know the feeling of that overwhelming desire. But tons of beauty in Oz too, of course.
That's awesome Joe. Not a thrilling video in any way, but a special one and I think it's cool that you saw the channel through that lens off the bat :)
You two are the best! Top notch awesome people! Lost Lakes is incredible and amazing! Thank you for sharing and guiding the beautiful paddles and portages. You have inspired my family to paddle farther.
Jon, Our son, Neil and fiancé, Billie, told me about your channel about a year ago. I have watched many of your canoeing videos and thoroughly enjoy them. We used to live in Thunder Bay (1969 - 1977) and now live in BC. Our provincial fresh water regulations call for single barbless hooks in all rivers, streams and creeks and most lakes. Treble hooks are not allowed at all. There are many lakes that have special regulations as well. I basically got to enjoy fishing through the pharmacists in Terrace Bay when my work schedule allowed me to do so. We fished the mouths of Steel R., Aguasabon R, and along that shoreline. I have a 5.6 lb., 23” Brook trout trophy on my garage wall caught in the waters near Terrace Bay in 1994 with Neil. I’m envious of your adventures. Cheers, Tom
Hey Tom, thank you so much and great to hear from you! Your son and future daughter-in-law are incredibly sweet people. Hope Ontario sees the light on hooks here soon. Not many other places could one land a spec like that...it's a paradise here (and you've landed in another one in BC). Cheers!
Loved this. I hope you guys stay together always. You're the cutest sweetest couple. You enjoy each other and your canoe trips/fishing and we know how that feels. I think it makes a couple closer. Keep enjoying the life you're building. ☺️
You both seem like good people. The outdoor adventures are great but the genuine good heartedness of both of you is what makes the channel enjoyable to watch. You are both principled without being pretentious, that is a good way to be. I got an added level of respect for Erin knowing she has done some concrete work. Concrete and especially block work is one of the hardest trades there is behind residential roofing. She seems like she will make a very level headed, even keeled psychologist and Jon it's pretty cool that you work with GIS mapping, seems like it goes along somewhat with your hobbies. You both have the right idea keeping office jobs. I got the sense Jon that you don't love being in an office but it will preserve your body and motivation to do these challenging backcountry trips. Trust me after a 50 hour week of roofing out in the elements it has a way of smashing all your plans for any physical backcountry trips and making you just want to sit around and relax on the weekend out of the elements. You got a nice life you have set up for yourselves, especially finding each other. Keep the videos coming. Great content, I love the honesty and openess.
Thank you so much Kyle! Concrete sounds like brutal work, but Erin's tougher for having done it, that's for sure. Hahah interesting you picked that up---I don't think I said anything about that---but you're right...I do feel pretty cooped up spending most of my week in an office. I've never worked a physical job full-time but without a doubt that would impact my weekend plans, and long-term physical health. So that is a great silver lining :)
Long post about staying dry on river. I have been fishing since the early 1960s here in the Rocky Mountains, so first off thanks for the dynamite videos of tripping and fishing wild places. BAO is my favorite channel and especially now that it is the two of you. Man what a blessing that is. OK, so I wear Simms G3 guide waders with goretex lining whenever I wet fish.. I can wade, and fish from my kick boat, all day, year around, with complete comfort. From bare leg in waders to full on winter insulation, waders, max comfort all day. Just like wearing jeans for comfort. At lunch the waders stay on. Driving to another spot miles away, the waders stay on. My waders are faced and designed to articulate at the knee. 'Guide Tough' isn't hype it is the truth. I think every guide I have ever seen here in CO has worn G3s. These suckers are TOUGH. These waders will handle anything I have seen on your videos while portaging. Easily wear them in the canoe in comfort all day. I coated the entire bottom of the neoprene stocking feet with McNett 'Aquaseal' which is bombproof urethane sealant. I wear in camp, boots off, and there is no wear. Stockingfoot waders need boots, and there are plenty of relatively light weight wading boots that serve double duty on portage as well. Mine are Simms my son got me last birthday and they are the best wader boots I have ever had. I wear those all day in total comfort as well. And, no chance the soles will delaminate. lol This gear isn't cheap but it is the best ime. We sure hate to see you soaking wet when it is cold. YUK!! lol I'm guessing if you get some waders, you would NEVER go back to getting soaked and just toughing it out. My .02. Best wishes for a wonderful life together.
Thank you so much GAW, truly appreciate your support and the sage advice. Sounds like a fantastic piece of gear. Not cheap indeed at $700CAD! But you get what you pay for. I actually have a good pair of Simms chest waders but the fit isn't suitable for backcountry travel and I've always resented the idea of being in waders all day. Probably just stubborn and it results in many long, cold days. BUT I'm getting there as I just ordered a two-piece wet suit for cold water paddling...mostly as an insurance policy to buy time if we dump. Thanks again my friend.
haha nice, i circumnavigated lake Michigan truck camping one summer on accident with some buddies. camped our way to the Porkies and when we left it was like screw it, same distance to get back, just went around instead of backtracking. camping for weeks and then first stop back in society being downtown Milwaukee was quite the experience.
Hi I'm George and my wife Sarabeth, We've been watching you two for about three weeks, and Love the way you compliant each other. Sara and I have been married for 50 years, and were adv ad campers.I'm disabled so we were car campers, mostly weekends. We are 73 so we enjoy very much, and thanks for all your video's. God bless you both; George & Sarabeth and pewee too is a Budgie
Love watching you both as I to love camping Adirondacks. My grandfather went there before I was born with a pole, 22 rifle, bed roll, topographical map and cumpas. He would leave in spring and return in summer. Sadly he died before I was born
Local stuff is great, for the simple reason you can do them every weekend. Getting back to the same spot over a few years in different seasons is quite gratifying.
I stumbled on your channel looking for information on dunlop, ten mile upper mace route a few years ago and been watching ever since. especially those cold winter saturday mornings dreaming of going for a paddle. Thank you
Great stuff! You guys are so humble/down to earth, I like the organic nature of your videos and in my opinion a lot of TH-cam videos are over edited.cant wait to see the new Canoe!
Thanks so much Hayden!! Yeah the fortunate thing about having very limited editing capabilities is that nature videos shouldn't be too fancy...it doesn't fit the theme. In so many other genres I couldn't cut it but I can scrape by in this one. Neither can we! 😁
You guys really seem like the kind of people I'd love to sit around a fire and talk with all night long. Thank you for being generous enough to share so much about yourselves; it just confirmed that you both are truly genuine, good people. I admire that you're making content you want to make, not resorting to gimmicks for entertainment, or deliberately making things shorter or longer or anything like that. I feel like it's all too easy to chase views and make videos you don't even care to make... I have been guilty of it. I really enjoyed this video and I look forward to seeing your upcoming adventures! Take care Jon and Erin!!
Most kind and much appreciated TR!! Sometimes I think about TH-cam that way too, but ultimately if I don't have a passion for it, I talk myself out of it. I do this because I absolutely love it, first and foremost. I do try harder with thumbnails and titles now, knowing that's just part of the game.
I'm a bit late to comment. But lately I've been more or less binge watching your videos. And I have to say that I really , really enjoy your videos more and more. You two is a match made in heaven. You're both very lucky to have finde a life partner that shears each other's lifestyle. Yesterday I just finished the "proposal video" started chopping onions on the sofa. You both seems like really good hearted person's. Wish you both all the best in the future and keep them video coming. Cheers from Sweden.
I love the fact that I watched John's last video and the first with you as you both joined up! I'm definitely a loyal fan and absolutely love you both! You two are so perfect for each other and I can't wait to see more! This is one of my favorites, just for getting to know you both better. Thanks again for doing this video!
Thanks for the Q&A. Good to get to know you a bit. I grew up in Ontario paddling in Algonquin. I now live in Michigan and kayak (year round) on the Detroit River. (Lots of uninhabited islands on the lower river and north west end of Lake Erie). My question is about your approach to paddling safety. We use dry suits, pfd, marine radios, and practice self and assisted rescues on the Detroit River. We have had to do rescues in February due to capsizes in wind driven waves and, obviously, we were glad that we knew how to do it. I know you wear a dry suit and pfd, but what is your plan for dumping in a lake like Superior.? Do you practice self rescues? Strap your gear into the boat? (PS excellent walleye in Detroit river)
Thank you and good question....I've studied self-rescue but I really need to practice it, no question. I appreciate how deadly cold water is and I try to be very careful about getting away from shore
Alrighty. I don’t often comment but after enduring that felt obligated to share my thoughts. Have always appreciated your humbleness and honesty in the good and the bad. Glad to hear you will be enjoying a new canoe - will be curious to see what you end up with. You will so appreciate something strong and lightweight! I won’t lie about the vid being a bit long, but I didn’t mind at all! Just watched it over a couple of sittings. Will definitely continue to follow your adventures and now that I feel I know you a bit better I can’t end without chirping you for wearing those hand warmers during the whole vid... cracked me up during the vid. So please take that as it was meant, to give you a chuckle and encouragement to keep being you (and you missus Erin)!
LOL it was actually quite cold in there...I was trying not to shiver. Maybe we should've let the stove go for a bit first 😅 Thanks SB, appreciate you taking time to get to know us. I would take the same approach to a video like this...watch it in bits, if at all lol.
Just stumbled upon your videos last week!! You, Erin, and sometimes Xander have been making getting through these office workdays so enjoyable. Thank you for your content😊
Thanks for taking the time to do this video - learning more about both of you makes you that much more endearing. Wishing you safe travels, good health, and much fun in 2020.
Of course you know that the term Cajun ~ is Oh So Prevalent in New Orleans. The whole culture there. A friend in Social Work School (Tulane) took me home for Thanksgiving (upstate Louisiana in the bayou with his grandparents "shucking ducks" feathers for pillows in their room ~ in the back) Grandparents did not speak english ~ only the French language there). Of course I am full of tears as Erin talks about a career as a Counselor. ~ My thirty year career included all modalities in New Hampshire and some in Massachusetts. MSW from Tulane 1989. Now retired. I am designing a trimaran rig for my 16 foot Madriver canoe. Northern Maine and New Hampshire ~ pretty remote there. My goal continues to be Lake Nipigon. ~ It is "The Way" ~ (for me). You guys continue to be an inspiration. Thank you so much. from New Hampshire. ✨🌸🙏🌸✨. 🇨🇦 🌸🇺🇸.
It is great to get to know a few things about you both! You both seem so genuine in your values and love of nature, you are a pleasure to watch. I am soooo glad you enjoy filming because I soooo enjoy watching your adventures, they are wonderful and very entertaining. I have learned lots about fishing and hope many others have as well, most could learn from your gentle handling and great respect for the fish and their well being. Keep up the fantastic videos you guys and ignore the trolls. You both know who you are and what you stand for, don't let anyone tell you any different or bring you down. There are many of us who appreciate and value what you both bring to TH-cam so just concentrate on us and tell the trolls to stay under their bridges where they belong! lol Thanks for sharing! :) :) P.S. Jon, I know you could out paddle Justin any ole day and Erin, I bet Taylor would appreciate a carry on your back, certainly on your rough trips! hahahaha!
I have a real life Canadian brother-law named Paul Kelly. Anyways my sister and him have been married for over thirty years and you guys remind me of them a lot because of the smile's and when you two look at each other. I just really wanted to say you guys are awesome, so stay safe and positive and keep on getting on. O'ya my brother-in-law played against Thunder Bay when he played and coached the Muskegon Fury.
As a canoe tripper from long ago, who was able to canoe the UP of Michigan and around the Wawa area and east of it, I live for your channel, as well as Chris and Julia Prouse, Jim and Tori (and Ted) Baird and Brad and Leah Jennings. Nice to learn more about you both.
That was a neat change up for you two. I've watched all of your videos and some twice. keep doing what you're doing. It's why we all watch. No need to change anything! Ice out is coming soon. -Bushman
Hi from BC! I grew up in Ontario and got my backcountry bug from trips in Algonquin Park. If you haven't heard of it, check out Bowron Lakes canoe circuit. 117kms I think of world class scenery. Could be something for the bucket list! (go in the fall, Oct, if you don't want to see many people) Keep up the good work, it's nice to see the eastern backcountry which brings back good memories.
Hey you two! It wasn't boring at all. Had some good laughs and found out more about you both! Jon, you remind me a lot of myself when I discovered my canoeing passion as well. Passion is alive and well with you my friend. Keep it burning. Also Jon, if you have the opportunity, go to the Rio or far up north for a canoe trip. Your mind will be blown. Good choice for epic canoe trip Erin. Trust me, you'll want to do it. Also, just as any fyi, other than some rapids you'll have to deal with, trips to the Nahanni or places like the Mountain are pretty laid back. You do need solid whitewater skills, but other than that, if that was the last trip you ever did, it would almost be as easy as basecamp, just a lot better. I paddled Lake Superior several times, and I love that place as well. But I can tell you, the Rio and rivers up north are unreal as well. All the best to both of you!
Thanks a bunch David! Great insight...putting that info in the bank. When time permits, I would love to do either option. Finite vacation is the biggest problem. Our country needs to learn about time off from France...life is short.
That was fun. Don't sell yourself short, you guys are entertaining. You guys have good chemistry and are genuine. I had to have one of my Megadeth beers with you while watching.
Finally got a chance to watch this! Tinderrrrr ;) awesome story, you guys make a great couple! Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed getting to hear more about the two of you. You guys should definitely do the Yukon River to Dawson City. The wife and I did it back in 2018 and it will not disappoint! Look forward to seeing more of your adventures!
Hahaha thanks a lot Teunis! Definitely on the radar for the future. Probably going to be some time before we have enough time off for that, but we would love to :)
Good job guys, Your both so lucky to have a partner that enjoys the same things in life. I'm the enjoy as much as I can and am very content with being in nature and my wife is a work for the Porsche kinda person. Has been challenging . Cheers guys. btw love the raft man beer . Christened my new boat with one when i picked it up .
Thanks so much for replying guys. Especially since it’s been sooo long since you uploaded this video. (Like I said I just stumbled across you guys). Erin. I was so touched by your goals with building a boat with your dad. I lost my dad far too soon and wish more than anything I had more time with him. We are machinist and my daughter (7yo) has grown up in a shop with my dad (her papa) he was her everything to her and we spent everyday together (working in the shop) so please don’t let that opportunity become an afterthought. As in my case my daddy was perfectly fine one day and a week later was gone. I worked with him side by side for the last 15 years and never saw anything or hand any clue he was sick. It happened so quickly and unfortunately passed 6am thanksgiving morning 2018. It was the hardest day of my life. Hearing your goal to accomplish something with your dad gave me such a drive to push and make my daughters life as memorable and exciting as I possibly can. Build that boat girl. Grab your dad and say we are doing this NOW!! Love you guys.
Aw thank you Amanda 💚 My heart goes out to you...I can't imagine losing my dad so suddenly. We live a long drive from Erin's family right now but plan to move closer next year and then she will have to seize that opportunity right away. That's a beautiful goal with your daughter 💚 I got out on a short trip with my dad last month and we'll have to make a more regular habit of that too.
That was fun...I really enjoyed getting to know both of you better. It seems you are perfectly meant for each other 😉🙂👍. I only started tagging along on these canoe trips a few months ago and you have quickly become my Favorite channel!!!!!! I mean it, your content and filming skills, along with all your camping and paddling skills makes my viewing experience so pleasurable. TV...you can have it...but I'll watch your videos as often as I can 😉😊💛👍.
I can't believe I watched the whole thing as I hate long videos as we talked about before Jon. You two are going to do well in this endeavour. You are genuine, funny and a heck of a match. As for the trolls, you can't let them win by not doing this and depriving your fans of great videos. I know, a bit selfish but they unfortunately are part of the package so keep these videos going. And thank you for doing what you do. Cheers
Greatly appreciated Joc!! Always a few bad apples in any bunch...they're a serious nuisance but we're learning to deal with it. Thank you again. See ya around!
Excellent! I too love Lake Superior! I grew up in Michigan canoeing, Fishing, Hunting and Trapping! Raised on a farm then off to service then worked in wildfires then law enforcement! Retired from law enforcement and Marine Corps Reserves as a Helo pilot! Now I’m in Arizona with a business or two! As a kid I ate Bettermade potato chips made in Detroit! I mail order them still! I ran across this video in my feed! Keep doing what you’re doing! Before you know it you’ll have a million subscribers! Also the Rio Grande River has cottonmouths, rattlesnakes!
I just found your channel and watched a winter camping one. I guessed you lived somewhere near my favourite lake: Superior . I recognized the terrain I have done 9 lengthy kayak trips there and 3 trips doing Pukaskwa. Hoping to go again! I am looking forward to many more great escapes watching your trips!
Thanks so much again Carol! I was lucky to get a job on the shore of Superior 3 years ago. Never knew the magic of this lake. We're planning a couple of bigger trips on Superior this summer that might bring back some memories :)
Great video - I watched the whole thing, but it was in segments :). Thanks for sharing things about your life. I look forward to many more of your adventures.
This was a very enjoyable video to watch. It is nice getting to know you two on a more personal level. The two of you have great chemistry. Your video have inspired me to want to visit Canada and see this vast wilderness first hand. It just a matter of logistics to go with work and working around the kids schedule. My question is where did you learn cinematography. How did you learn how to edit and tell a story through video? Also with a background in marketing do you ever use those skills to help grow the channel or are you letting this happen through organic processes?
Thanks a bunch William :) We're lucky to live here in camping paradise...certainly makes getting away a lot easier. Great questions. I used to be really into photography, which uses a lot of the same principles, but taking video has been a huge learning curve. I've learned by trial and error...looking at my oldest videos, that becomes clear. I still have a very long way to go, but I enjoy the learning process. My editing is super basic...I don't have the skill set or laptop power for more. If I have any skill with it, it's filtering out the junk and attention to detail. As for marking, I don't try to use my background at all except for the knowledge that organic growth is the strongest, albeit slower. I used to have to self-promote all the time and now I'm grossed out by doing it. I've never even shared my videos to my personal Facebook page. Though I've tried to make my thumbnails and titles more broad appeal/catchy in recent months....I've learned that's just a must on YT. You could make the best video ever, but if people don't get the urge to click the recommended thumbnail, they'll never know.
I watched the whole thing. I am amazed that people think Erin should not be cutting wood. I taught my wife how to make kindling when we camp. My wife is a fire bug. She loves poking the fire. I think your channel is way awesome. I have been trying my best to watch all of your more recent trips. John, my sister lived in Marathon. Erin, my sister lived in Thunder Bay. I will say it again...I love your videos...the cinematography is off the charts. You both do a great job. My daughter and son in law have been to Iceland two times. My son in law is a great photographer. Some of his night sky photos have been on the NASA website. You can find his work on Instagram. Look up David Crombie and Seleena Crombie. They are like you both in many ways. They love the Rocky Mountains. They live in BC now.
Thanks for sharing another aspect of your life and who you two are. Just chilling out, comfortable and looking content. Nice. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, you guys are just regular nerds too. Whodda thought? Lastly regarding those cold and timid souls who try to criticize or deride, or worse, what you do and create, realize they see in you and what you're doing something they cannot. Its beyond them and they can only respond by trying to denigrate you and somehow bring you down to their level. Stay above all that, they are inconsequential. Can't wait to see your next canoe trip.
Love your videos. It's just fascinating. Here is a tip to help. Instead of one 60 min video. Break it down into 2 30 min videos. We will watch them trust me! But youtube will compensate you 2 streams instead of 1. Also it sould allow us to break down the video so we can watch it without having to stop and hope we pick up the spot later
If you wanna build a boat try skin on frame canoe or kayak. Probably much easier than cedar strip. There's a cool channel by a boat builder from Oregon, cape falcon kayak, you should check out. He does kayaks and canoes.
WOW. I am always finding a favorite part of a video around the third time I view it. You two are awesome to be amateurs. Oh but now you have surpassed that status 👏🏾😇
LOL. Precious memories. Who could've known then the passion it would turn into. It was an incredible gift. Thanks Pops ❤️
Mr. Kelly, I bet the apple doesn't fall far from the tree 🙂🙂🙂
I love watching you both! You're one of my favorite channels! God Bless you both!
Proud Daddy!
Clearly he’s got some good genes. Good work Lloyd.
This is the most underrated channel on TH-cam. Helpful tips, route advice, and great personality. Thanks for doing it.
Too kind Chris, really appreciate that comment today. Thanks my friend.
😊I love that John gave you a fire extinguisher for Valentines Day!! Better than chocolates and flowers. So sweet!!
I've been binge watching your channel. Thank you for sharing who you are, it really makes your adventures even more interesting to watch. Would love to see an updated version of this!!!!
💚
The chemistry is unbelievable. You compliment each other beautifully (Ying & Yang)..
It's very nice to know you both better, thanks for sharing.
Looking forward to a new season with BAO, Cheers !..
We greatly appreciate that Pete! Thanks for joining us over the last year! :)
Backcountry Angling Ontario, your welcome. My pleasure. I love your work.
That was so fun, thank you both. I love the way Erin looks at you Jon, she is so in love. I love how you look at and treat Erin, you are so in love with her. You guys are good together and good for each other.
Love this Dane, thank you my friend. Love is a beautiful thing :)
You two are a very fun couple. OMG, Erin’s parents sound like incredible explorers also. How great would it have been to have their adventures on video. That thought should make you realize how much you will appreciate your videos later.
They are adventurous souls for sure. I can only imagine what they would pay to have those memories on film. Fantastic point.
(Advice from an old fart, take it or leave it ;-)
).
Thank you so much Marcel (and missus) 🙂 Most kind comment and we greatly appreciate your support. Very pleased to have you join us here!
You are obviously perfect together. Virtually everything in common, both with great work ethics, and love of outdoors. Glad I've discovered your channel, especially after getting to know you both a bit. Thanks for sharing.
With all of the people who are not getting along in the last decades, it is nice to see you two getting along well. It is very nice.
Wonderful comment Gerald, thank you my friend! Appreciate all your support 🙏
Much love and admiration for you both 🐠🇨🇦 🛶
That was wonderful guys. Donna & I enjoy following you videos.
Jon, the way Erin looks at you; You are one lucky dude.
Go Bruins! :)
Thanks so much you guys :) I sure am!
Ugh not Bruins...our playoff kryptonite.
Dude. Rewatch this and look how she looks at you. Such love. You ARE BLESSED.
💚
Incredibly generous of you to do this. Big thanks.
Hahah I'm just surprised anyone would want to see it....appreciate it Pam!
Thank you so much Ross! Hanging onto her for dear life 😜
I believe you're becoming one of the ten best outdoors yt. Channel. Keep it real and we'll be fine. It's most enjoyable. Thanks for the effort of documenting your trips.
Most kind DrKno, thank you so much for the support!
Thank You for showing and revealing so much of your personal lives. I’m from Texas, but I just found you and I am very so impressed with both of you.
Erin is a Super Woman! Love your strength and tenacity, You are a Rock Erin! And John has such a sweet soul and he’s so knowledgeable about so many
Subjects. You are a Great Team!
Appreciate that so much Cj!! Been hearing about the icy conditions down there...hope it all melts for you soon
I couldn’t have said this better myself!
Thank you so much Thomas!! I think some people like an explanation and some prefer to experience things vicariously and draw their own learnings from it :)
RE: Alexis Outdoors, I guess there's more explaining in their content but evidently a lot of people love her style (including Erin and I😝), and having camped with them this winter I can tell you that Careena & Ryan are such lovely and genuine people :)
Really appreciate that MR69!!!
Thanks.
So kind Glenda, thank you!! Really appreciate it :) That was very good of Jason too
This was a great idea. Giving more personality lets us followers feel more connected. You make a wonderful team and am very happy for both of you.
Thanks so much ET :)
Thanks so much for that :) Really appreciate it. So true, we watch on Roku sometimes too and it's hard to interact. Lots to come!!
This was just amazing. Loved every bit of this. I find you’s both entertaining and informative and true to yourselves which is why I watch you’s. Don’t change a thing. Looking forward to what you’s bring next.
Most kind, thank you again for all your support Trisha!! 🙏
Thank you so much for sharing about yourselves like this. This was in no way boring, just the opposite. I hope you realize how important your videos can be for people who could never do what you two do for various reasons, physical disability or work/ family issues. You take us with you and it is very special, especially for the spirit! Thank you.
Thanks so much TTM :) Love to hear that and we greatly appreciate it!
This was so much fun...thanks for what you do. I certainly live vicariously through you adventures. Keep up the good work!!
Much appreciated Garrett!!
Your second date winter camping video was my introduction to BAO. I have watched all of Jon's videos but that was my first.
Jon,
Our son, Neil and fiancé, Billie, told me about your channel about a year ago.
Cheers,
Tom
Hey Tom, thank you so much and great to hear from you! Your son and future daughter-in-law are incredibly sweet people. Hope Ontario sees the light on hooks here soon. Not many other places could one land a spec like that...it's a paradise here (and you've landed in another one in BC). Cheers!
Loved this. I hope you guys stay together always. You're the cutest sweetest couple. You enjoy each other and your canoe trips/fishing and we know how that feels. I think it makes a couple closer. Keep enjoying the life you're building. ☺️
Thank you so much Sally! 🙂😍
Got through the whole thing ...in increments. You are so good together. Thanks for sharing.
@@LostLakes Glad to hear about the wet suit Jon. Hopefully Erin woill get one as well. Have a GREAT fishing and paddling season. Bob
@@gravityalwayswins1434 thanks Bob! As long as we like mine, she's getting one too. Same you you!
haha nice, i circumnavigated lake Michigan truck camping one summer on accident with some buddies. camped our way to the Porkies and when we left it was like screw it, same distance to get back, just went around instead of backtracking. camping for weeks and then first stop back in society being downtown Milwaukee was quite the experience.
I'm sorry you didn't get to experience that with him but it's a beautiful mental picture to have of him :)
Local stuff is great, for the simple reason you can do them every weekend. Getting back to the same spot over a few years in different seasons is quite gratifying.
Very true. Usually I crave exploration but it's fun to see the seasons change a place, and certainly does wonders for fishing if you know the spots.
I stumbled on your channel looking for information on dunlop, ten mile upper mace route a few years ago and been watching ever since. especially those cold winter saturday mornings dreaming of going for a paddle. Thank you
That's the best time for a TH-cam escape 🙂 Thanks for coming along Bob!
Nothing less than I could have expected. Your parents have to be so pleased.
Thanks so much good sir 🙏
Love this video! I agree with you that, camping by yourself or with someone you love is the best way.
Really great to hear about the transition from southern to northern Ontario. I think a lot of us can relate
Thanks Matt :) It was a weight off my shoulders.
Thank you so much! 💚
I love the fact that I watched John's last video and the first with you as you both joined up! I'm definitely a loyal fan and absolutely love you both! You two are so perfect for each other and I can't wait to see more! This is one of my favorites, just for getting to know you both better. Thanks again for doing this video!
Thank you so much Brian...doing this video wasn't exactly my cup of tea so I'm glad to hear that :) Just the beginning for us!
pretty cool video guys, I skipped through a bunch of it and it was nice to see. Cracked me up with the bagel at Tim Horton's which I LOVE THOSE PLACES
Hahah they're pretty great. Not fancy of course, but good bang for your buck. Thanks again PRO :)
Side note: met my boyfriend on Tinder 3 years ago as well 😂
Thanks for taking the time to do this video - learning more about both of you makes you that much more endearing. Wishing you safe travels, good health, and much fun in 2020.
Thanks so much April, glad to hear there's some value to this long video :)
✨🌸🙏🌸✨. 🇨🇦 🌸🇺🇸.
wow thank you for sharing your amazing journey
Now he is looking at you like the world revolves around your eyes. What love.
:) :) P.S. Jon, I know you could out paddle Justin any ole day and Erin, I bet Taylor would appreciate a carry on your back, certainly on your rough trips! hahahaha!
LOL. Very touched by your comment Jacqueline...thank you so much for this and for all of your support!!!
Thank you both for doing this video! We have been wondering about a lot of the questions you answered. I LOVE your channel, your adventures!
Thank you so much Theresa!!!
Thank you both for sharing this. Erin and John stay safe. 👍👍🎣🎣
Thanks again David 🙂🙂
-Bushman
Thanks a bunch bushman :) Looks like it'll be an early one.
Thanks R M! Appreciate the reco...sounds lovely, especially right about now :)
O'ya all the videos are awesome, but the one's with you two wanderlusting in the great white north are the best.
I love this! You two put the refresh in funny in the most wholesome way!
Well a fire extinguisher is red...... Great video
Right!? Lol thanks Jimbo!
That was fun. Don't sell yourself short, you guys are entertaining. You guys have good chemistry and are genuine. I had to have one of my Megadeth beers with you while watching.
Hahah right on, much appreciated James :)
Thanks so much man, very lucky indeed. It's a great one...that little bit of smokiness. Great choice :)
Thanks so much Jane!

Love this video! Just found you channel and love this one made me know you guys better and love your vibe. Keep the dream going!
Much appreciated Eric!!
Thanks to both of you for doing what you love and taking me along on your wonderful life journeys. 😇🙃
You guys are so cute! Great video. Looking forward to all your upcoming adventures.
Thanks Amber!! 🙂🙂 Lots to come!
Nice job guys i luv that you wanna keep the channel simple.
Thanks a lot Ron :)
Loved this getting to know you guys...you're the best. Makes watching your adventures even better.
Thanks so much Andy!
The way Erin looks at you is priceless.
your Q&A vid is not boring at all... watching it for the 2nd time! TY for putting this together.
Thanks a lot Loi!!
Sounds like a full life my friend! Thanks so much again MJP
Great couple, great video and for me the best outdoor channel on yuotube. Keep up the good work.
You rock, thanks a million Robert!!
You guys are going to love your amok hammocks
I’ve had one for about 2yrs now and love it 👍
😁 Love to hear that endorsement. Can't wait!!
Just watched this to get to know you both a bit better. Loved it all. Fabulous couple. Will be watching all your future canoeing trips 😊. Thank you.
Thanks so much Lynn!! 🙂🙂
It’s really cool to learn a bit about each of you…I’m having a great time making my way through your channel, love your content!
Thanks so much Lawrence!!
Loved getting to know you guys a bit better. Thanks for sharing
Great Channel Guys
Just found it I am from Ontario so I love the local content Ontario has more to see than you could ever in a lifetime 🇨🇦
Loved your Q & A! Thanks so much for sharing your lives with us!
💚
Thank you so much Jeff. Comments like yours really help us nerds stay positive 🤓 Thanks brother.
You will love your Amoks , after I got mine I will never use a regular hammock again, and rarely a tent :) love your vids !
Ahhhhh so excited!! We're already in the "rarely a tent" camp, and can't wait to join the "never use a regular hammock again" club. Thanks my friend!!
@@LostLakes Best nights sleep ever in the backcountry :)
If you wanna build a boat try skin on frame canoe or kayak. Probably much easier than cedar strip. There's a cool channel by a boat builder from Oregon, cape falcon kayak, you should check out. He does kayaks and canoes.
You're definitely my number one channel.
It's the journey that makes a good life! Do what you love, and u do! IKIGA! Star Wars? May the force be with you!
WOW. I am always finding a favorite part of a video around the third time I view it. You two are awesome to be amateurs. Oh but now you have surpassed that status 👏🏾😇
