My son was a pro football (soccer) stadium groundsman and trained as a golf course green keeper before he joined the British Army. His top tip for reseeding bare areas that developed in the goal mouths etc in the winter months (Here in Scotland it rarely gets below freezing) was that he would half fill a plastic box with grass seed (pro football pitches use pure rye) then he would soak it with water for a day or so until it was fully hydrated. Then he’d drain off the excess water and place it next to a radiator/heater in his store for a few days until it sprouted. Kind of like malting barley for whisky. He’d keep this sprouted seed specifically for areas of damage that needed quick repairs. He reckoned it would save him a week to ten days in the growing time and would make the difference between the pitch looking good for game day or not. Bigger clubs with bigger budgets have grow lights and under soil heating but he didn’t so needed every trick to keep the surface playable.
Just overseeded last week. One pass with Tall Fescue and second pass with Kentucky 31. *Also, just wanted to note that Landscapers mix is also called Contractors mix.
You help me so much last year with my grass problems. My front yard was sod so I over seeded it with a shady Sunny mix and my backyard I planted with shade and sunny mix seed and it's beautiful. Thanks so much for giving me the courage to do that myself. Love your Channel
I never leave comments, actually this is my first time ever commenting on video. I would just like to say I've been watching you for about 3 years now and you are very educational, detailed and generous for sharing so much helpful info I've learned so much from you. You are f****ing awesome bro!! My confidence have grow so much from all the things I've learned. KEEPING GOING BROTHER!!🖒
It was because of your videos that I went to a KBG and Tall Fescue lawn, for years I struggled with sun and shade mixtures after watching your videos I decided to kill my lawn and go with a sun loving grass that was disease and drought resistant. My lawn gets sun all day till 4:00 My lawn looks amazing thanks to your insightful tips.
I watched this video at the perfect time. My crocuses are coming up and we were thinking it is about time to seed the winter lawn damage. Thanks for the tip on the 50 degree soil. I would have been seeding this weekend if I hadn't known. Keep up the great work!
When doing large sod jobs get a sprinkler going as soon as you finish an area, and be sure to tell the customer to water water water! Also when making long cuts like along sidewalks or driveways use a stick edger. It works great!
Bro, I’ve been watching you for years. You have an AMAZING TH-cam channel . Why are you not on HGTV ? You’re like The dirty jobs guy, you’d be perfect! Thank you so much for having the guts to go out there and make these videos. I’m sure a lot of landscapers would be to worried what other people would think. Dude this channel has prob brought you so much business. If I lived near you I’d KNOW you’re the professional and expert. I’d hire you , and tell my friends that want lawn work done and tell them about you, and say if you don’t believe me look at his TH-cam channel- boom more jobs. Good for you brother. By the way God is TO good brother
It is a busy fall for my house, I put down some sod in my bare spots on my Tall Fescue, and I am going to re seed with a shade blend near my plants border, they are throwing too much shade, and in my backyard my son and I laid down 200 sq ft of Tif Tuf sod. The days of laying 600. sq ft of sod by myself are over. No more hands and knee work or getting up or down.
The only thing you didn't mention is "contractors" seed. Be aware that this will only last one season and die off. It is meant to grow fast and cover, but not last. We call it fest grass, as we use it after setting up for festivals to quickly green up paths and parking areas after we destroy the grass. This is a nice quick fix or use this with other seed to get the "fest" grass to sprout in a few days and let the other seed root and not wash away..
Good point. Up in Canada, we call that an "annual" grass seed. The only thing that people have to after spreading the annual seed is to add in perennial grass seed when the temperature is right and there is little to no traffic on the newly seeded areas anymore.
I had a landscaper tell me once " the spring and summer is for killing weeds, the fall is for growing grass" He was right. My " significant other" was visiting her family out of town one summer and after a few beers one Saturday I decided to go to war with some patches of grass spreading in my lawn. I went in the garage and took my sprayer and Mr.Round up and went to town. By the time I was done my entire front lawn and the parkway was dead :p . Long story short, one day my neighbor came over and asked me " are you growing wheat" ? Needless to say, when my roommate came home she kind of freaked out so I was forced to act. I roto tilled the entire area. Then raked and seeded. On top of the seed I broadcast compost aka : black gold on top of the seed , lightly raked that in then put a starter fertilizer , I used 10-10-10 on top of the seed bed. After that I put a seed blanket on top , used the staples and started watering,. The seed mat that I used did not contain any seed. Its use is solely to hold in moisture and aid in germination, keep the seed in place and keep birds from eating the seed. I always think of the seed as "soldiers" . And you must keep the soldiers happy . Water twice a day , early in the morning and late afternoon. As I said , I like to keep my Army happy. I will take more 10-10-10 after I have watered for about 4 or 5 days and lightly broadcast with by hand over the seed bed 😈 . I cheat, my grass always comes up :p. I make it grow :) Another thing I was told by lawn contractors . Seed or sod, watering is a must. Keep watering until the third cutting and then your good. One other thing about the seed mat. I had a lawn contractor tell me the only way he will guarantee the lawn is if he's using seed is if the mat is included in the bed. I got the compost idea , spreading it on top of the seed from Roger Cook from This Old House. He loves compost. So do I. Landfills give it away. They have so much of it. I had a dump truck :d ✌
I always put down a little bit of starter fertilizer when I'm seeding maybe like 1 part fertilizer to 3 parts seed in a bucket mix it all up and it comes up like a beautiful green wildfire carpet.
Great info Stan. You could make another video on soil prep (soil samples) as well as how to lay sod up to existing grass and touching on how important it is to never lay sod over grass. Also we usually come in and install sod after construction is done and how to deal with that compacted soil. All this is very important to cover. Go get em
Is sod recommended over seed if it’s a yard with heavy dog activity? It seems like sod would root faster than seed. Also, if you sod in the fall, will it take to the soil enough after a few weeks to withstand dog traffic? I can keep them off the yard for a few weeks but not the entire winter. Anyone’s input/experience would be great
You're videos are so damn good man I subscribed just because I want to learn more about your incredible communication skills. Also, great tips! Think I'm gunna go with Sod! Haha
Gotta say Mr. Monkey great video! My town is replacing all sewer and water lines and my yard is just distroyed, trashed . They are soding in Oct ish to fix damage I'm going to use the blend technic to help it get back to normal. Love your videos and the tips. In the next year or so I might (depending on my health. Recovering from cancer) start a lawn care business. I will be binge watching your videos and thumbs uping .
Exactly. The misconception out there is that the only type of grass that sod comes in is Kentucky Blue grass. No, but that is all that Home Depot sells. In Ontario, Kentucky Blue grass doesn't work that well. All the more reason for w.e. box store to sell it because you will need to buy more of it in 2-3 years. There is different types of sod that is built for shade, not just seed. At least here in Ontario from sod farmers
I have planted seed two weeks ago using the Scotts sun and shade mix. I used starter fertilizer as directed and put a dried straw covering to hold in water. The seeded areas have also been watered daily. The seed has not moved but has not started to germinate. I hope it will with some time but I am not sure.
The seed has not moved... Did you rake in your seed? Most seed will be not apparent after a light rake in which rolls/covers seed and kicks in a start with water holding in soils and seed taking that in. Straw helps keep soil damp. Seed just laying on top of soil, especially hard pack, will have a poor germination rate
Should mention a lot of seed mix includes annual grass for erosion control and what I call results and some of the grasses grow at different germination rates. Like blue grass. Longer than most fescues
I had to reseed a section of full sun lawn last year. I got the grade I wanted, then used chicken wire embedded into the top soil and rolled in the grass seed and sprinkled more top soil over top and rolled that in too. I have a good lawn and no cat holes, thanks to the chicken wire.
The only thing I didn't quite get was if I DO IN FACT decide to lay sod in the summer (Begining of june), how much water is keeping my sod on a "heavy watering schedule"? And if I decide to lay seed instead, will I have to water just as much because its hot?
Gotta seed our little lot pretty soon. Have to rebuild the green since the last person decided to kill it all. Always a shame since grass isn't hard to maintain.
She was a crazy lady drugs alcohol etc, will definitely be bringing the yard back thanks for the info on the right seed to use. Also glad to have found a fellow minnesotans channel!
Can I put Centipede SOD over Bahia grass? I hired landscape company that removed my Sandy soil and Centipede sod, and put in organic soil and seeded Bahia. But this made all the inspects come to the pasture grass including dangerous wasps and also now my yard looks like a huge puddle that is supposed to be due to organic soil keeping water on longer (that’s what landscaping company told me). There was nearly zero insects on the grass before. I’m thinking to redo and put the same as it was originally, but since there is currently organic top soil, can I just and a bit of Sandy soil and put Centipede Sod on top? Also will adding Sandy soil on top of organic topsoil create any drainage issues? My goal is to have grass that drains quickly and does not attract wasps and insects since I have pets I’m worried about getting stung.
awesome tips i love it. however would you prefer doing hydroseeding instead of sod and regular seeding? If you prefer hydroseeding need a video with all the tips and how to run a machine and mixing the ingredients what so forth. Great job stanley love your work!!!
Put down new sod on Tuesday. While at work my wife and kids walked on the sod and now there are significant brown patches, I guess where the kids were sitting. What do I do? Is the sod dead?
Would it be a bad idea to lay sod in a new build backyard mid September in South East a Texas? It is still very hot here but we are moving in September and our dogs will destroy our backyard if there is no grass...
Ok any advice for first timers-I live in Arizona and it’s summer all year. Do I just use sunny mix? How much do I reseed it a year? Also how much should I water it?
Viktoria Avila I would say to hardscape as a lawn in the desert will need constant watering. Also you should look up zoning laws for landscaping as the municipality may not allow you to have a lawn. If they let you have a lawn I would use a native mix for the area as the plants will be adapted to the area.
I'm a beginner. My yard is pretty much cement soil. Should I till the yard and then put 4 inches of top soil and then seed? I have tree roots that stick out of a very bare area as well. No grass around it, just hard dirt. And I suddenly have millions of dandelions! Help.
Great video as alway Stan! I will be seeding this year in a heavy shaded area. Thanks for the tips. Now I just need to figure out a setup for automatic watering because I know I will not get to it every day haha! Keep up the great videos.
Didn't say the style/pattern differences. Only casually mentioned one at all, Kentucky Bluegrass. So what is the sod? St. Augustine? Seed is Bermuda, Bluegrass, what? And what pattern do they each make when thriving?
We do seed and sod as our work. Doesnt matter how you distribute the seed but that it gets covered with loose dirt and stabilize the ground with something to reduce washing. To get even distrubution on slopes we Hydroseed or drill it in using a Terex track loader but you probably dont have access to equipment like this. Those hand operated spreaders work pretty good and are cheap. Rake seed in afterward.
would be a better opening to see "stan"(if that is your real name rich) tearing into a lawn in his Hellcat spinning a few donuts, hop out and say " sod or seed whats best?" ; )
Help! I laid sod a couple years ago because my lawn was over-run by nutsedge and the grass was very patchy and dry (I watered every other night or at least 2-3 times a week). My lawn gets fried by the strong high sun all day and there is no shade. The sod was beautiful when installed and the following year until the scorching sun came again. It still looks pretty good, but I have a couple bald spots. My maintenance landscaper said that he can put seed, but seed doesn't work on sod. Is this true?? In this video it sounds that I can seed. What's the real story??
All the more reason to make you grass as healthy as possible before winter hits! The most important time for heathy grass and plants next summer, is fall time. If your grass and plants are heathy right before winter, the winter is less likely to kill them or making them less healthy come next spring and summer
R u still recommending Ventrac? They came out with a sickle that is the perfect solution for acreage i own. Problem: i live close to Harrisburg PA and no close dealers. Which would mean $ for repairs and maint work. Thanks Mik.
Yes outside of sun or shade issues ground temp is right at the top of the "must have for success" list. Overseed is the same thing as seed except you're adding seed among established grass plants so all the seed rules still apply.
Hey, can I plant sod on steep/ish grades? Client approached me today and wants sod around his new pool that’s installed on a hill and around it is graded at a steep angle.
and when laying sod on a steep grade make sure your seems don't line up to help with erosion...last thing you want to do is make a channel for water to run down and erode the soil under the sod
Did a sod job a couple years ago and got a call back saying there were so unhappy with the job and theres dead lines everywhere. Got there and the so called dead lines where dog tracks. how the hell am i going to prevent that ask them if they were joking
CAUTION if you use a contractor to fertilize your yard they will most likely use a pre emergent ,and this will not let seed germinate in the early spring so before you seed always ask questions
I have a high traffic area, with dense shade, and sandy-crappy soil. Ive put lots of seed and fertilizer with no results. Whats the solution? Seems like gravel at this point haha
I love the idea of over seeding sod. I can always tell a sodded yard vs a hydro seeded lawn. Some of our hydro seeded lawns are amazing. I tend to cringe when I know sod is on the job site It is great tho. Not in summer I know that but I will make it grow. Love the bird food note. That’s what I call it when it’s not properly done. And I always try for one seed per inch.
Probably cause it was a U Tube video and Stan wanted to see people hard at work , But a real efficient Land s apper will always use the fastest and cheapest way to get a job done , N Stanley s case his cheapest cost would be to work illegals to het the job done either way it did get dome and probaly better than a machine to do the work , No substitute like mamel labor , .
Gordon Ward. Evergreen trees have very acid droppings. Try sweetening the soil with lime. This will help with the PH. Try to keep the area clear of droppings from the tree. Don't mulch that area. Good luck.
Great Channel, I wish they would have a referral network app.. I imagine it's risky considering all the fake/phony contractors out there they wouldn't be able to keep quality control ratings up to warrant a referral app/site.
Well about 20 plus years ago I used to be in the landscaping industry and as far as sod goes yes we had sod strictly for a shaded areas I forgot the name of it It was a type of Saint Augustine grass I believe Both the Sun and shade Anyway it's crazy how grass just changes as you change locations around the US I've lived in Florida to Jersey to New York to Cali Everywhere had different types of grass nuts anyway like the work you do keep it up bro P. S . Get to work, lol areasduda-sod.com/developer-builder/sod-gallery/ Here is the place I used to buy my Sod from check out it's types of grasses in gallery I think FL had the best grass in all Of the United States It's a guess/opinion

OK ...we need a video just about the fox. Thumb up if you agree!
Haha I'll keep that in mind!
My uncle had foxes when I was growing up in west Michigan. It was truly unique
What kind of fox is that?
when in doubt...pave it

Here in ontario canada we have the option of using rtf sod which does well in shade
Exactly. The misconception out there is that the only type of grass that sod comes in is Kentucky Blue grass. No, but that is all that Home Depot sells. That turf champ shade mix is great! It came in great in my yard last year. Growing mad this spring too!
What about fertilizer prior to putting down seed?
I have planted seed two weeks ago using the Scotts sun and shade mix. I used starter fertilizer as directed and put a dried straw covering to hold in water. The seeded areas have also been watered daily. The seed has not moved but has not started to germinate. I hope it will with some time but I am not sure.
Chris Burak soil temp reach 55 degrees yet?
The seed has not moved... Did you rake in your seed? Most seed will be not apparent after a light rake in which rolls/covers seed and kicks in a start with water holding in soils and seed taking that in. Straw helps keep soil damp. Seed just laying on top of soil, especially hard pack, will have a poor germination rate
I raked in the seed and really raked up the ground it was planted in. It has that blue coating so it is very easy to see.
soil temp must be there and consistent light watering.
Is your seed old at all?
Great information. Did not know about landscaper's mix. Thanks for the information.
How do you not have 2x-3x the followers? Your videos help me out all the time
I appreciate that Tyler, thanks so much for being here!
Should mention a lot of seed mix includes annual grass for erosion control and what I call results and some of the grasses grow at different germination rates. Like blue grass. Longer than most fescues
I'm filling in spots because of my dog pooping in the backyard. Hope it comes back. Thanks for all your tips! Great job as always.
Thanks Don, good luck!
Poop usually makes ur grass taller. The pee is what kills it
Beautiful Fox
Kinda wish he went over pricing but super helpful
What is that awesome broom/rake attachment?
I had to reseed a section of full sun lawn last year. I got the grade I wanted, then used chicken wire embedded into the top soil and rolled in the grass seed and sprinkled more top soil over top and rolled that in too. I have a good lawn and no cat holes, thanks to the chicken wire.
Thats a really cool trick.
The only thing I didn't quite get was if I DO IN FACT decide to lay sod in the summer (Begining of june), how much water is keeping my sod on a "heavy watering schedule"? And if I decide to lay seed instead, will I have to water just as much because its hot?
Stan your the man.
Love your channel
Thank you- appreciate that!
Where are you guys located? I would love your help with my backyard❤
I'm thinking of planting sod next July, what do you think?
Gotta seed our little lot pretty soon. Have to rebuild the green since the last person decided to kill it all. Always a shame since grass isn't hard to maintain.
I wonder why they killed it all
She was a crazy lady drugs alcohol etc, will definitely be bringing the yard back thanks for the info on the right seed to use.
Also glad to have found a fellow minnesotans channel!
excellent pointers bro
Hope it helps 👊

What would be recommended for planting and over seeding grass seed, tool wise I mean.

Thanks Dave! Good luck 👍
Wait wait wait... So if there's alot of shade its bad for sod. And if its summer time its a bad time to lay sod... Help me out with this one
You seem to have it pretty much down
Shade and season are mutually exclusive
Ive seen people get a lot of weeds when they do seeds. Sod kind of smothers the weeds.
Didn't say the style/pattern differences. Only casually mentioned one at all, Kentucky Bluegrass.
So what is the sod? St. Augustine?
Seed is Bermuda, Bluegrass, what?
And what pattern do they each make when thriving?
I just got one of those torches and read that it lets off a gas that can be hazardous to your health. Make sure its well ventilated inside.
Where are the links for the seed?
Great tips
Hand broadcast? Or seed spreader? I have hilly land and using a spreader is difficult at best to get consistent seed distribution with either method.
Could you give advise for southern texas, Austin area?
Awsome man👍👍
Thank you Aidan !
Didn’t know Gas Monkey did landscaping.😂great vid
Thanks for viewing Barnabed !
would be a better opening to see "stan"(if that is your real name rich) tearing into a lawn in his Hellcat spinning a few donuts, hop out and say " sod or seed whats best?" ; )
Great video
Thank you !
Centipede sod does very good in shady spots
you love that propane heater story! lol
So can I seed right before the winter to have the grass grow in the spring? We have snow winters as well.
All the more reason to make you grass as healthy as possible before winter hits! The most important time for heathy grass and plants next summer, is fall time. If your grass and plants are heathy right before winter, the winter is less likely to kill them or making them less healthy come next spring and summer
Great video Stan!
Thanks Rufus!
Information was very helpful thank u!
R u still recommending Ventrac? They came out with a sickle that is the perfect solution for acreage i own. Problem: i live close to Harrisburg PA and no close dealers. Which would mean $ for repairs and maint work. Thanks Mik.
Do those rules for seed also apply for overseeding? Especially the ground temperature rule?
Yes outside of sun or shade issues ground temp is right at the top of the "must have for success" list. Overseed is the same thing as seed except you're adding seed among established grass plants so all the seed rules still apply.
Hey, can I plant sod on steep/ish grades? Client approached me today and wants sod around his new pool that’s installed on a hill and around it is graded at a steep angle.
THESENTONE yep just make sure you use sod staples to pin it to the ground so it does not wash. Lay perpendicular to the hill staggering the joints.
Yes- use sod staples
Good advice
Ditsch Lawn & Landscape nice thanks! I didn’t even know there was such a thing as staples for sod. I’ve never installed it yet. Thanks!!
and when laying sod on a steep grade make sure your seems don't line up to help with erosion...last thing you want to do is make a channel for water to run down and erode the soil under the sod
Did a sod job a couple years ago and got a call back saying there were so unhappy with the job and theres dead lines everywhere. Got there and the so called dead lines where dog tracks. how the hell am i going to prevent that ask them if they were joking
150,000 🎉 👍 Nice!
CAUTION if you use a contractor to fertilize your yard they will most likely use a pre emergent ,and this will not let seed germinate in the early spring so before you seed always ask questions
You look a lot like Nergal. Behemoth's singer !!! Or do you change profession ???
😳😳😳
Helpful tips 👍👍👍
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that 🤘
3:40 for when to use sod. Lots of preamble filler imo
Can someone please tell me what that attachment is called at 0:07
thank you so much
Thank you !
4:45 Me: That’s a weird looking dog.
4:49 (After reading it’s a Fox) Me: 😳😳😳😳
It’s June, I have a large area in the sun that is completely grass-less after removal of trees. Seed or sod?
Seed baby. I'm in the same boat. Check that ground temp just to be sure
What does sod stand for
So basically we should just overseed? I mean, even if we sod it'll have to be overseeded anyway?
What is the tool used at 0.11 seconds? I may need one of these for my current project - what does it do?
That's called a power broom. Great for sweeping rocks, leaves, debris, snow, small kids :)
If you lay sod in an area that is more shady, how soon do you start over seeding after the sod has been laid down
right away from what ive understood from this and other videos
I have a high traffic area, with dense shade, and sandy-crappy soil. Ive put lots of seed and fertilizer with no results. Whats the solution? Seems like gravel at this point haha
Id have to take a close look to see whats happening to keep the grass from growing.
If the soils bad try removing a few layers of it and adding good soil on top then put down seed
I would say garden with wood chips, much better than plain gravel.
Compost. aeration.
Do you lay soil when seeding
If your subsoil needs it then yes.
jordan stone yes,do it after seeding as it will be less noticeable to birds
Stanley make your next video being the "Playing With Fire" as your next video PLEASE
Good stuff
😀👍
Can you Americans help me out here, do you have excavators called Menzie Muck over there? I keep asking for a review but no answer. Thanks
Brett Swampy I’m a contractor and I have never heard of that brand.
Brett Swampy I haven't seen it yet if we do,but I can say I haven't seen it before in Minnesota
Nacho Man have you seen one on TH-cam or the web? They are pretty unique
menziusa.com/
Great vid
Thank you!
Can't you get sod that's done in the
no sod is grown in shade.
And they cant grow a sun/shade mix because the dominant seed will take over correct?
What temperature for the sod?
No links good sir
Need no grass at all , michigan seed or sod
Mannnnn if you did work at my house and put that crappy seed in my yard we would have to fight lol
The guys are working to much.. why not use a sod cutter machine...
It was a smallish area and would have taken longer to locate one then to just do the work.
I am kinda shocked you don't have a sod kicker for smaller areas
These guys are afraid of sweat.
great info but what kind of grass will grow under a huge spruce tree?
