- We're talking about one of the biggest superstars in the history of Bollywood. And, SRK falls in quite an elite company: Bajraj Sahani, Guru Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna (THE superstar), Amitabh Bacchan, Dharmendra, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Shahrukh Khan.
He's an outsider who made it, but so was Rajesh Khanna.
The whole debacle about Raaes isn't because SRK is an outsider. That's hardly the case. From Mohabattein to Rab Ne, SRK delivered staggering Hits in between. He's remained the most consistent of all Khans. The quality of his work was declining, but as a star - he was right up there. He still is.
The comparisons haven't helped him - add to that his movie choices, and that's why SRK isn't considered the force he once was. Salman's legendary run right now, which is only toppled by Rajesh Khanna in the late 60s and early 70s along with Aamir's huge hits at the BO have taken a toll on SRK. The expectations are high because his contemporaries are turning the heat.
Fan was bound to fail. It was just a poor movie. Raaes, as good as it may be, can't stand up to Salman's Sultan right now - so it was a good move. Movies like HNY and Dilwale along with colossal disappointments like RaOne and JTHJ doesn't help him either.
He needs to reinvent himself. That's it. His next movies like Raaes, Imti's next, and Aanand L Rai's next all indicate that SRK is going for it.
There was a time when Salman was considered the star in the trio; Aamir the actor; and SRK a mixture of stardom and acting. That was his strength. He's moved away from that image trying to play catch up to Salman. Whereas Aamir has maintained his streak of doing one quality movie after every commercial movie, and Salman continues to play to his strength - SRK forgot what made him great. - บันเทิง

My college professor was his batchmate & he always used to say that Shahrukh was never poor but nor was he affluent.
His father's family used to (& still mostly) reside in Pakistan where as his mother was from a well-to-do Hyderabadi family. His family lived in Central Delhi where his father ran a canteen & they lived a good life until he died. Then his mother raised both of the kids alone, SRK did some gigs alongside but it was his mother's family who mostly supported them.
But then after a few years, when his mother also met her sudden demise, his family severely collapsed. SRK by then had already became a part of a few TV serials but the money he received from them wasn't enough to afford a good life not to mention, also clinically help a severely depressed sister.
Therefore he came to Mumbai with the leftover money & a dream, blindly accepted whatever roles he got offered, maybe got lucky as almost all of those either became iconic or the movies that they were a part of, became big hits & thus gave rise to the name Shah Rukh Khan...
So technically he wasn't poor but he wasn't rich either. Yes, his grandparents might be rich but his family wasn't completely dependent on them, financially. If they'd had supported him & his sister financially then SRK would've never done small roles in plays & TV serials, in fact he would've never chosen the acting gig in the first place!

Afraid of poverty and failures ,he was also pointed that he doesn't have the quality to become a hero , he was told he was ugly and he was average in terms of appearance , no appealing trait of a hero for flims . An Outsider after listening all this he didn't stop he went out and he debuted as a second lead after Rishi Kapoor and then won a Flimfare debutant award.Then SRK married his girlfriend then Gauri . After that because of his looks he was not getting a role .. so he decided to act as a villain .he mainly focused on acting whether the role of good or bad guy , he then played 2-3 villain roles not like today's villains,( it was a obessive guy and psychotic characters )then it was his tuning point . Imagine you’re a Teenager, with a sister and both of your parents died. Whatever your father did to run the family, simply to sustain at that level at such an age in those days would have a surmountable task, so even if he was not dirt poor his financial situation would have been in shambles. I believe He was able to achieve global success , was largely due to his mental strength, confidence in himself, and probably his state of mind he saw not other way but to pursue acting, and from his transition period of a beginner to his performance in Deewana he realized the craft and simply worked hard. Rest is History! If that’s not inspiring then what is.
