I served as an Air Force Cop from 1986-1997.....Its amazing to me how the equipment utilized today has gotten soooo much better....Alot of the techniques, patrol and building entries are basically the same. I saw a lot of the world, made me truly appreciate America. Loved every Minute of it....Gave me education, life of benefits, a family and the best friends I've had for over 35 years!~! Hoaah!!

I served 8 years in the USAF. The first half of that was in Security Forces and then became a canine handler and Raven, until I cross-trained into what is now called Special Warfare as SR. I am now a disabled combat veteran and would do all of it again without changing any of it. Know this though, if you think any of this is going to be easy and that is to be your reason for doing it, the training instructors will be able to spot it and you might get through all of the training and still be removed on graduation day if they don't find you to be a solid fit for the career. I did not choose this because it was easy. Thank you to all Airmen that serve, no matter your career field, they are all important. If you are joining the USAF, do not give up, push yourself, and work with everyone you can to help them get the tasks done, even if your own is already done. You might be surprised how much the others will return that favor because we all want to get through the toughest points. One last thing to keep in mind. As tough as all of the training is, not only is it to weed out those who should not be in the career field, but it is also that tough because once you finish tech school, your day-to-day job, weather that is deployed or not, can at any point, and often does, become harder than what you went through in tech school in some aspect or another. Best of luck, future Airmen!

I am a Former Security Policeman 6 years Active/9 years Air National Guard and I can tell you I wouldn't trade my time in the USAF Security Police for anything ...I loved it! It is what you make it. I was stationed at Dyess AFB for 3 years in the Strategic Air Command..we had a squadron of B52D's..4 Nuclear uploaded on alert at all times. As an A1C I was a Sentry on uploaded B-52's or on a Boundary. I was a ART/SRT member and also a Fire Team member in a Armored Vehicle (we had 6 Fire Teams on Alert at all times). When I made Senior Airman (Below the zone) I qualified to be a Entry Controller and an Alarm Monitor in the Priority A area's. We also had 3 squadron's of C-130's. I did Fly Away Security. We trained 4 times a year in Air Base Ground Defense at Ft. Hood Army Base against the US Army 7th Calvary Scouts. I was on one of the first EST's..Emergency Service Team's (SWAT) in the Air Force.
I got to attend the FBI SWAT School and we got to put on EST training demonstrations along with the Combat Control Team across the street from Security Control. (We loaded on 2 C 130's with a Combat Control Team climbed to 20,000 ft., the CCT did a halo jump. After deploying the CCT the 130's spiraled down and did an Assault landing on a dirt strip. We deployed in our Armored vehicles out the back of the C130's and took the objective, reloaded with the nuclear weapon we recovered from the “Terrorists” and did a Assault takeoff)!
I was stationed for 1 year in Turkey at a Secret MUNSS site. As a SGT...I was the NCOIC of Arms and Equipment for the Security detachment and also the Team Leader for the RRT ( Recapture and Recovery Team) a joint Turkish - American Anti-terrorist Team.
When I rotated back to the World, I was assigned for 2 years at Langley AFB, VA to Headquarters Tactical Air Command. The unit I was in is the Tactical Air Command Guard...we were the Security for the CINCTAC (Commander and Chief Tactical Air Command..4 Star General). and I was a Flight Chief (SSGT) for Bravo Flight.
During my time in the Alabama Air National Guard I got to go to "Sliver Flag Alpha" in Indian Springs, NV, the USAF SP Desert Warfare and Survival School. It is what you make it, I did a lot of different things in the Security Police Field....AND LOVED EVERY MINUTE... except for the time I spent in a Turkish Military Prison..but that is another story!

Worked with the USAFE SP at Lakenheath and Mildenhall whilst stationed at RAF Marham. Impressed by the size of their role, covers base security, policing and canine response. Trained in much more equipment and weaponry than we were as RAFP, and played hard as well as worked hard. Enjoyed many a night in the social clubs of their bases.

I was a Security Police Specialist from July 82 to April 88 and we performed all of these duties as the female counterparts were cleared into these career field and together we took pride in doing all of these jobs before it was broken into these separate components. I would do it all again in a heartbeat and love what I did with my career as a Defender!

Was an SP assigned to 22nd SPS, and 19th SPS (SAC) from 1980-1984. After leaving the Air Force, and career field, I thought my law enforcement career was over. I became a tradesman (certified welder) specializing in fabrication. After my job and company was outsourced overseas, I had to reinvent myself and find another career. Long story short, I ended up becoming a municipal Police Officer with a career that spanned 31 years with me retiring as an investigator specializing in forensics. It's great to see how the career field has changed and has merged new and different specialties into the field overall. Best of luck to all my fellow defenders. DEFENSOR FORTIS

My dad was a Sgt in the SP Sq at K14 when it was overrun in 1950. The only reason he is alive and I was born was that he was tasked to drive some VIPs south across the Han before the Army blew up the bridge. The Army units tasked to defend the airbase bugged out and left USAF SPs to hold the base. In those days they performed basic police service. That had no heavy weapons, no crew served weapons, just 1911s and carbines. The Army left some of that behind but without training it was hard for USAF SPs to use them effectively. Nearly every member of the K14 SP Sq was killed defending that base

Security Forces is a ymmv situation. You can get stationed in great places, get opportunities, have awesome experiences or not so great, not many, and not so good. The difference can be luck, attitude, leadership or other factors. I did 4 active in the 80s, another 17 in the guard and had a parallel career with INS and then the USMS. I would do it again, no complaints.

Wow. I was a member of the Security Police (yes I'm that old) back in 1978-1983. I left to become a computer programmer. However my heart never left the SP's behind. My berets is proudly displayed right over my computer. And it will always have that place of honor. Be well my brothers and sisters who earn the berets of the security forces. It may seem an ungrateful job but just remember, you are the front line. You put those planes in the air. Without you they don't move.

I am really surprised at the equipment Security Forces has now. We never had any of that when I was in. We had three jobs: LE, Security and ABGD. We barely had time for the first 2 but were required to train for the third one. Nonsense. Moreover, we had people who worked very hard and received little recognition. At the end I was so surprised how little someone would sell out for. Tough job made harder by a few. My advice: go civilian police. Look for the department with the best pension and medical. But even more so than in the AF, check 6 always.

The ASVAB is broken down into four main categories (Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electronic), and all enlisted career fields have a minimum score requirement that fall under one or more of these categories. These scores, along with the results of your physical examination, will be reviewed when you undergo job counseling during the enlistment process at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).

@StudderBox Hoewahh I think I’ve been in long enough to tell that this is the number one career field where the leadership (that is supposed to take care of you) does not care about your mental or physical well being. This isn’t just me but almost everyone that works in this career field. It’s unfortunate because the job itself isn’t why I want to cross train into something else it’s the Senior leaders that abuse their subordinate so much that it has made people kill themselves or replaced them because they are injured in some way. I can only warn you and guide so you can have a great career but this job will destroy you simply because people do not and will not care about you. Even if you ask for the help you will always be a number to them first and a human being second to them. Good luck and just trust me, I rather see you succeed valiantly than be abused by ignorant leadership.

I got K9 right after tech school and served for four years. I'm proud of my service, but this USAF background never helped me becoming a police officer in a large city. Obtaining a criminal justice degree was also a misguided attempt to become competitive. Checking ID cards at gates and walking circles around parked aircraft is not considered law enforcement like an OSI or CID history is. This is indicated by the S/F-Asvab requirement. It ties with becoming a cook. No disrespect intended. I'm not a critical outsider. I walked around fences at night in arctic-cold weather waiting for the truck to come out with a box lunch. We were cops as much as school crossing guards are. Don't take this job.
