I grew up in Bury in the 80's (born 1978) and have become a little obsessed with this video. I've timestamped what I think are current landmarks. I think a lot of these streets have either been knocked down over time or clad.
0:28 - Classic Cinema (now the old Halifax bank/Amusement Arcade next to the bus station)
0:33 - Timpsons (Now Fulton's) heading down Princess Parade
1:36 - The Rock (Burton Menswear now Cash Convertors and an e cig shop)
    1:45 - Crompton Street (Toymaster)
1:56 - MD Wireless (Inside Millgate - possibly HM Samual?)
3:51 - Old Market Hall (Burned down Nov 1968 now Bus Station/Kay Gardens)
Please feel free to correct me.

I assumed the burton was the rock but i didn't recognise it.. I'm 10 years younger than you so it was always paved between rbs and wilko for me

As the car takes a left at 1.50 I instantly knew that WH Smith's was at the end of the road. Bought my first chemistry book there and ended up teaching it for 30+ years. Time flies. Great footage.

Very interesting how things have changed and not all for the better. Shame that most of the small shops have gone.

Reminded of Granellis ice cream parlour and the Saturday morning cinema club at the Odeon cinema. I think there was also a "Star" cinema on Bell Lane. And the Sea Cadets, TS Scorpion (Late fifties-early sixties) by Bury Bolton canal. All coming back now. Thank you for posting this.

great video, thanks very much. Went to school from 1975-1979 at wellington secondary modern. Then 1979-1980 Ashmeadow High near the motorway. Don't remember so many cobbled roads, and it was just 10 years later. Was there a lot of development shortly after this video. As I can barely recognise the rock, the classic cinema where I SAW BUCKRIGERS IN 25TH CENTURY (1978 I THINK). Good times! Remember being a terror with a peashooter at dinner times. Sorry to any of my victims :)

A street map showing the route taken by the car would be great if anyone has time to do it. Fabulous street views. Just how I remember Bury of the 60s. Streets with shops on! I recognise most but not all of them.

I remember a few of the streets, though I was little at the time this was taken.
The rock, the old market hall (heartbroken when it burned down, Dad and I used to walk down every Saturday morning to buy Mum a box of Black magic) ,and I remember walking though some of the streets being cleared for the new shopping center to be built but didn't know any of their names.
Bury has changed so much since I was a child , mostly for the best , apart from having to pay for car parking everywhere!

Hi Bryan. The building I'm talking about is 2.09 seconds into the film on the right hand side ,with a cream van outside ! Again many thanks for posting this great film which has brought man many memories back to me of when I lived in Bury some 65 years ago

  • @PeowPeowPeowLasers

I think the cinema at 00:29 is the Classic, before it was clad in blue. It used to stand next to Bury Interchange, where the Halifax bank is now. So the road he turns into is Princess Street, which is now Millgate Shopping Centre.

Not only a great clip but prophetic in the use of dashcams and youtube unless you went in the Tardis (LOL)
That Bedford Van at 3.40 brought back a memory. We toured Ireland in one of those in 1971. Same colour. It would be amazing if it was the actual Van/minibus. Thanks for posting this historical gem. Bury has changed a lot but only in recent times. I remember those places very clearly.

  • @northernmisfits

Yeah, saw Quatermass & The Pit there in 68. Still have very fond memories of it. Across the road on Bury Market there was a stall that sold imported magazines and where, for the not inconsiderable sum of 2/6 I could pick up Famous Monsters of Filmland etc. Happy times.

Hi Michael, the building you refer to must be the Cinema Royal - previously known as the Theatre Royal .... I'm guessing you mean this. It was on the corner of Princess St and Market St - directly opposite the old market which burnt down in 1968

This is wonderful. I was born in 1972, and it all looks so different. The only bit I can place for sure is the Market Hall at the end of the video which I know is now the bus interchange. I think I also notice Silver Street, and Roxy on the rock. But I'm really not sure. Is there any chance that anyone can list the streets?

01:40 is obviously Rock Street (or The Rock) into Fleet Street. Then at 01:42 he turns left into Crompton Street. At 1:58 he turns right onto Haymarket Street, then left into Garden Street.

  • @johnthecloud
    @johnthecloud 11 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually I'm beginning to think that the cinema that I though at first was the Roxy is actual the Odeon. If most of this is now part of the Millgate shopping centre then that is probably why I don't remember it, as I only remember the shopping precinct that must have been built around or shortly after I was born.

My guess is this is inside the Millgate, possibly the Mall near where the o2 shop is. Could be wrong though. After turning left on to that street they turn right onto Princess Parade down towards what is now the bus station.

I was born in 1956 and certainly remember the streets looking that way when I was a boy - going round the shops with mum, going in the Market Hall and having a milk shake in Jopson's. It looks grim, yes, but it had character. Is is better today?
