Incidentally I also consider my Cold Steel shovel an invaluable tool and it took the place of a machete in my pack because quite frankly I feel much more capable all around with the sharpened shovel. Your careful planning and thoughtfulness is one of the things that won you that prize, but I think it was also in large part your personal resilience. I'm still making my way through S2, but S1 winner was exactly who I thought it would be--another resilient and joyful individual with a sense of humour and an ability to be mindful of their decisions. I wish forever that I had the skills you do, because I would apply in a heartbeat--not for the prize, but for the journey. I probably wouldn't last a week, but I sure as hell would try. ;) Fowler, I congratulate you on your victory--well deserved, and well earned.

Unfortunately I didn't catch the show...And now I'm kinda glad I didn't, I get to watch thru your eyes. Afterwards, ill go back and watch, but the re-enactment is much more engaging for me.
Sleep bag knowledge. The first number is the risk of being cold 20 or below. The second is comfort 29 you will still be warm at 29 and above. In between those two numbers mean nothing in my opinion, because it is getting closer to your risk number of 20. That being said, the sleeping bag is probably great. I think you just picked the wrong one. Next time, "Pick a higher risk number." Meaning a lower number. 0 and into the negatives.
If you go to an Alone all stars competition, and your wallet is deep enough, consider the Bison sleeping bag by Western Mountaineering! I know it's super duper pricey, but it's rated to -40 degrees and I can tell from experience, that it lives up to the reputation! I know it's made with down and it doesn't work when wet, but it has a hard shell that keeps it from getting damp. You'll stay warm throughout the night, even without a fire. This thing is AMAZING!

So this video is so good I decided to come back and contribute a little to your next Alone opinion show for episode 6. Since I am 1 vaccine away from autism anyway and I've watched the show at least 4 times this is what I've seen. (Because it was the first one this season deserving of rewatching) This for sure is the best family interaction and people being able to relate to the contestants, show yet. The idea guys killed it here. I relate to the young brothers, and the older brothers, the father son team, and the husband and wife team. So grand slam there History! I think the biggest risk( other than all the knives made by the company "Tetnis R Us") is the person who was talked into going on the show by the other person. Like Jim talking Ted into it. All that team is going to take is Ted getting mad enough, for like the whole day, at his brother, along with him being miserable at the same time and he'll tap. I think we seen that with 2 of the beach guys already (third tapped from real injury) that just weren't as into it as the other one was. Advise for future young people going on the show, you need to take food. That way you will have more time to experiment and learn before you starve. ( The only way that Jim's crab trap catches crabs, as of now and probably in the future, is if they set it out in a strip club back home.) The husband and wife team is still the strongest and I think may be the winners. I complement Brooke a lot on how good a job she and Dave are doing and she goes radio silent if i talk about winning. We'll be talking and if I tease her about winning, its over..That means she has something so good to lose if she spills it, she isn't even risking so much as a thank you to my to any comment with that in it. But that's a guess. Best guess, but a guess. She for sure is in the running for frontier queen if nothing else. The Wipples weakness is Dave. He loves her so much, that he isn't going to be able to watch her suffer. You can hear his deep love for her in his voice. But who knows, she may put her foot down. So there ya go, that's my Alone Autism take.
Please do something no one else will. Challenge Survival Lilly to beat you in your own Alone style dual, with same rules as on the show. Everyone here wants to see it. It would be so great. Maybe set a 3 month limit on it and call it a draw if you both make 3 months? (maybe not). I think we would all learn such a lot. Perhaps start by flipping a coin for who chooses where it should be? It would be awesome.

I always wanted to move to Maine. I'm a city boy, moved to the country... but farmland country not very wooded. I'd love to live that kind of life in the wilderness, testing and practicing skills. I am jealous for sure.
In the military, in infantry training, the folding shovel was much better for fighting than a combat knife. We used it for all sorts... From frying eggs on a fire to blungeoning things...

I've carried a shovel in my Wanigan for over 30 years. Most underrated tool.
I can honestly say, I fully agree with you Zach. The shovel is an excellent survival tool. I would of done the same thing.
And yet no one seems to bring a shovel in the following series. I always thought it was a great idea.

First thing I did with my cold steel shovel (I got it years ago) is sand the varnish off and replace with mineral oil. Much nicer on the hands.

It would also be easy to bushcraft a new handle out of and commonly found hardwood in the forest.
I have the exact shovel, very solid shovel... stays sharp and the edge won't bend at all.
