    I stopped watching television when it all went digital. And we don't even have an antenna here any more, so I haven't seen Season 3 of Alone.
    I have really enjoyed watching your reenactments here on TH-cam.
    Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and your skills with everyone.

    Just realized after I hit share that I forgot one clothing item. We were allowed a handkerchief or a shimoga I chose the shimoga because they are much bigger. And you can strip fibers out of it to use for other stuff

    My biggest gripe with Alone is that they never showed enough of what everybody did in their camps for the first few nights / first week. they end up showing the 'second' shelter that usually ends up being bigger and better. But i always wanted to see the camp life evolution at the camps. Glad you're doing this recreation. can't wait for episode 3.

    These 1st 2 videos are kind of technical And not an accurate representation of what the rest of the series will look like. After the 3rd one about the hacks I did to my gear It will be more just about the making stuff

    If you know to make the Kochanski supershelter tarp shelter as a double-walled assembly, with a 2x2x2 ft pit just inside of the entranceway, and it will be at least 30F degrees warmer in the 4x4x7 ft shelter, than outside and the wind will not be a factor. I would not even bother with taking the sleeping bag, since a raised wooden bed and lots of debris would suffice. I mean, what can you do inside of a dark old shelter, full of smoke, anyway? The clear vertical side of the supershelter will let in light and you wont be choking on smoke. You can have hot rocks under the bed, and the one way projected heat of a Siberian fire lay can be "aimed" at that clear side, from a safe 6 ft away, and the radiant heat will pass thru the clear PEVA shower curtain layers and be trapped inside of the shelter. Of course, your body heat will be trapped, too. There's no need of the axe and saw, cause you wont be processing more than 3 cords of wood in 100 days. Just take the E tool with 8" of saw edge. This knowledge will save you 2 months of messing around with a shelter that isn't warm and firewood processing that you don't need to do. If you get even 2 inches of snow, you can make the far superior igloo, which keeps you 50F degrees warmer than the outside temps. and can be made in one day. All you have to do is pack 3-4" of snow onto a tarp-covered brush pile. Sprinkle water onto the snow, creating a crust, and then repeat 2 more times. Knock a hole in the snow, withdraw the branches and the tarp, and voila, igloo.

      I have one pair of darn tough socks and I love them. I would like to try a pair of farm to feet socks just as a comparison between the two. I kind of hike... LOL. I have a backpack, my son has one, we both love hanging in the trees in our hammocks. The issue is that I have a rare muscle/autoimmune disorder I've been fighting since 2009 and my hikes are not "long distance" by any stretch of the imagination. So maybe hiking would be more like trail camping, LOL. My first merino wool socks was a gander mtn brand and they don't hold a candle to the darn tough ones.

    Why didn't you make something you could sit up in? I can tell from experience about 30 years ago when I wiped out on the Aniak river in Alaska in my nautiraid packer kayak and losing my tent body in the process, what I did for the rest of the trip was every night build a tepee structure over my boat. And took the rain fly and covered the driftwood poles which were numerous.
    Anyway, what turned out to be a real asset in building the teepee frame work was I has some 36" and 48" fastex buckles straps. I don't remember if they were 1" or 3/4" wide. I think I had 4 of them. I used those to quickly wrap around the poles at the top.
    And over the teepee framed I draped my rainfly and laid some other poles on top of the rainfly to keep it from flapping in the howling wind. It was early October, and ice had formed on my tent before my turn over the night before.
    I laid down one of my waterproof Sealine pvc bags in front of the side of the kayak and could sit on that beneath the shelter and cook, leaning back on the side of the kayak, for comfort. And for sleeping, I laid down in the Kayak and sleeping bag on top of me and sides - and on top of that my .375 H&H rifle. Well, it took me about 3 days down the river from there to get to Aniak, the village to get fly back to Anchorage.
    btw, my video camera, was in a waterproof pelican case - when I opened it, it was completely full of water. I also had some screw-on clear plastic jars - which I used to keep my fishing lures in, spinners, and guess what? Those jars kept my fishing lures perfectly dry..... ha! ha! ha! Joke was on me. Although I wasn't laughing about the $1200 dollar ruined video camera.

      Fowler's Makery and Mischief Hey, I was rewatching episode before this last one and I noticed something. Have you figured out why Ted stopped catching fish in his gill net?

    • @patrickgermond2750
      @patrickgermond2750 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fowler's Makery and Mischief Hey so remember I defended the Wipples on bringing the bar of soap. Yeah I don't know if I'm still there. I say that because I don't think they brought a gill net??????
      And I caught that Jim and Ted are 36 and 35 years old. They looked younger. But from the previews, one gets really sick, and if it's Ted, I bet they tap since he may not be as motivated to stay.
      I did like how Jim chased off the cougar. That was cool.

      Less gear since it wasn't as cold. One base layer, one pair of gloves (we did get a pair of warmer gloves around day 50 or so...could've been earlier), one hat only, no sweaters at all (one given when we got the gloves). Very different environment...though it got down to freezing temps - it was that raw wet cold. I found that my overbuilt shelter (3' thick on all 4 sides and on top...and the same for my bed thickness) were key..that and bringing in hot rocks at night to warm my shelter. Once I shut the door the shelter warmed up fast. Without the warm shelter to retreat to it would've been super cold.

      Hi Nicole. I've been impressed with how well you and some of the other ladies have done. It's sad that they only found room for one woman this season.
      Still, I suspect that Brooke and Dave Whipple will either win or place highly.

    The higher up the drier up Nice. My wife and I watch Alone. We call it slow starvation for 1/2 a million. We hike a little and its fun to see / learn the differences in mentality and gear. Did you have the choice of extra rations as one of the ten items? Also do you know of anyone who has tried to get - find or cultivate yeast? If one could choose flour as an extra food choice and get some "friendship" bread going. Seems like a way to extend / maximize calories. I know everyone is a winner / expert on the comfortable couch.

    when you knew to keep your coals buried in ashes, why waste a pick on a ferrorod? you. used it 3x. You can fire roll a 2"x8" strip of the shemagh in 2 minutes or less. All that's required is that you sand off the paint from the shovel, rust it heavily with coatings of iodine and then use the rust as an accelerant when fire-rolling.the strip of cloth. Since the shemaugh is 3x3 ft of cotton cloth. Anyways, the main thing to use for fire rolling is ashes. So, once you have the first fire, there's no more need of rust or using the shemaugh strips. You can use fibrous plants on site, or make charred material and use any carbon steel tool and any hard, sharp rock to get fire. You can also make a big pump drill in 1/2 a day. With some copper electrical wire, (part of your "snare wire) the duct tape" , some lint scraped from your shemagh, and the camera battery. So there's. 4 easy ways to make fire. and you only need to do it ONCE. So what makes the ferrorod "essential", hmm?

    I'm late to this party as I just discovered Alone a few weeks ago on Netflix (haven't had cable for 10 years). Sorry if I missed it, but I didn't see a description of your crosscut saw. Was it a Curtis model? Did you use your multi-tool to sharpen it? Can you talk (or point me to where you've talked previously) about that saw and how often you had to sharpen it? If you had it to do over again, would you use the same saw? Why or why not? Thanks. Really enjoyed Season 3. I'm just starting on Season 4, but so far Season 3 has been my favorite. The duration and creativity was most impressive.

    So in the show Alone season 3 episode, "Making the cut", at about 40:15, Colecracker is getting on the helicopter he has suspenders on that don't look to be sewn on. I wonder how he got away with that?

    • @FowlersMakeryandMischief
      @FowlersMakeryandMischief  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There was actually debate about that they tried to make Him take them off. But I spoke up and said that bogus I've suspenders And Mine are sown on. "he should be allowed to take his" They called Production And decided to keep his suspenders.

    Well. I just spoiled myself on the winner of season 3 but that’s okay, i was looking to see if Pantagonia was really as harsh as the tv show made it seem. Why some days you guys had fish but other days you didn’t? Was there anything else in the wild that could have been sustaining you like Rabbits? Squirrels? Birds? If the predators were sustaining themselves there then surely the human could, is my philosophy. Then again i am no survival expert, just very curious :)
    I also want to say congratulations on the win and hardwork and i hope you are alive and well.

    saving 300 hours of shelter making and wood processing leaves lots of time for making netting. It only takes one day to make the pontoon outrigger raft, and a day to make the rope. How long did it take too make the fishing dock and all the steps and handrails? :-) So you could have done 10x better if you'd done a bit more research. You are NOT going to homestead. They will never let the show go 4 months, much less a year. It would cost them a ton of money and offer them almost do benefit to do so.
