I had the opposite reaction to the argument. Before the argument, the suicide theory seemed like something the defense settled on because nobody would buy either an intruder or an accidental fall. And the therapist cast doubt on the suicide plausibility also. But after the argument, I could absolutely see Samuel as being suicidal. He comes across as utterly trapped (although, I think, in a trap of his own making), weighed down by what he sees as the demands of his wife and child and the home and everything else. His ambitions are frustrated and he tries to blame Sandra for it, but whether it's his fault or hers I don't think he sees a way out of it. She won't shoulder responsibility for the decisions he made (the renovation, homeschooling Daniel) and he won't back out of those decisions. So he takes the option he sees left to him.

Oh that's very interesting! I hadn't thought of viewing the argument from that perspective

I had the same interpretation. He totally was/had a victim mindset and it was perfectly displayed due to the recording. I would say if not for that recording the outcome 100% would be different! I suggest you guys to do some research in order to understand more about people with victim mentality and how they act/what they say, etc.
The suicide defense for me didn’t have any solid ground until that moment.
And I disagree with the finale, the ambiguity is what makes it stronger, because at the end of the day is all about how we interpret things. I think the prosecutor for the defense exemplefied this sentiment perfectly, also at the end Sandra did mention that winning doesn’t feel like winning and that is the point, the truth or what actually happened doesn’t even matter.

The fight to me absolutely showed a horribly depressed man who was blaming his wife for his failures. He exuded suicide to me and that was the moment that I made up my mind. But also, as someone who has struggled with depression and has been in the care of a psychiatrist for years, I greatly questioned the professionalism of the “psychiatrist’s” testimony. I even wondered if he was even licensed. His testimony was laughable. He sat there and blamed her for all of the husband’s problems just like the husband did. So he doesn’t have enough professionalism to acknowledge there might be bias in what patients tell him? He’d never met the wife let alone spoken with her. Ugh, what an awful psychiatrist, not to mention the husband never should have been taken off the meds. That scene with the dog, omg, that kid’s performance was absolutely amazing. What a gifted little actor.

Psychiatrists in France are notoriously bad.

    • @hurricaneofcats
      @hurricaneofcats 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The most appalling thing the psychiatrist said in my opinion was that none of his patients had ever died by suicide. He also was unwilling to admit any had tried which is crazy to me??? As a lot of mental health professionals can tell you, suicide or attempted suicidr can be horrifically common and can absolutely happen when someone is taking themselves off meds. It just does not make sense if you've ever researched suicide statistics.

I don't know if she killed Samuel or not. My intuition tells me that Sandra is innocent. But has the child told the truth? Did that conversation with his father really happen? I doubt it.

The movie is called Anatomy of a fall not Anatomy of a Murder, he commited suicide.

This is by far the best review of this movie. It was an amazing movie and I’ve been mulling it over since. I also loved that there wasn’t a romantic component.

Trailer fatigue is exactly why I don't watch trailers. Just go see the film cold. It's the best way to judge a film.

One thing I barely saw commented about this movie by non-french reviewers is the part about the fiction vs reality and how they inflence each other. One of the scene in the trial is totally dedicated to that and i think it is relevent to notice. The fact that the co-writer of this movie, Arthur Harari, is the real life partner of the director, Justine Triet, for instance, and the fact that he is a less successful movie director than her (specially now after the success of anatomy of a fall), i think tels a lot about how intimate this film is for both of them. It's the anatomy of a falling marriage probably using their real life experiences. Anyway' just a thought passing by.

The way in which it deals with our gender perspective is much more stimulating than the mainstream and stereotypical approach in other movies of the year like Poor Things. Great movie ❤

Yeeeessssss, this is what I liked about the move more than anything, she is what we as a society would perceive as very masculine, she's not "cold" as I heard people describe her quite a bit, because she gets angry and frustrated, and she's a bit flirty at the beginning, so she has emotions, is just that the emotions we see on her are more associated with men than women so on her they seem off, like she's hiding something, he on the other hand victimizes himself a lot and is visibly unhappy and unstable, things that we associate more with women, he's also less successful than her, another detail where the roles seem to be reversed, I keep wondering how would this have played out if the roles were in fact reversed, and can't seem to shake the feeling that if he was a woman and she was a man, same characteristics and everything, just gender swap, than he would've been found guilty, because even if we cannot prove the murder, we're more inclined to see women as victims than men, and THAT is the commentary I liked most about the film, the movie obviously comments on lots of things, but that in particular is the one I find more relevant in today's society and more interesting to talk about and analyze

@@xemiiklera interesting thoughts! I always think the exercise of exchanging positions between a woman and a man helps to understand how sexist our perceptions can be.

Really great review! I didn’t notice the piano as “chapter markers”, but I definitely noticed how it was the only music, outside of the 50 cent song, in the entire film.

The dummie scene is not ridiculous, it’s very often used by police to investigate the possibilities in crimes or accidents. I live in Brazil and there’s a crime that schocked the country some years ago, and the reconstitucion used one; the scene of this doll falling from a window is very alive in every brazilian memory (a guy threw his daughter in order to protectet his wife, the stepmother, who thought that she’d killed The child, who was still alive and died after the fall). Its sad, it’s useful, it’s serious and a scientific effort, AND very common, how can it be funny?

This movie finally made it to my local theater. I left the theater wanting to talk about the movie, so it did rank highly for me. It might have been an A for me if it was paced differently, but I feel good about a B+. I felt like the first hour dragged, and then the second half of the movie ended up paying off, but if I was watching this at home, I might not have made it to the second half of the movie.
What struck me was how there were distinct moments where I was convinced that she did or didn’t do it. I ultimately landed on one side, but I could easily be convinced otherwise. It’s a good discussion movie.

This movie teases and plays us quite a bit. We are an audience that loves answers in our thrillers. We are an Agatha Christy audience. Who did it, dammit. But I still loved the movie, I can embrace French ambiguity.

🤣🤣🤣 I see how it appears that way. We filmed this in our dining room and had to move the dinner table against the bar in order to fit everything in the shot. In our more recent videos, we have a new set we're using that's a bit cleaner. And thankfully we don't have to keep rearranging the dining room.

I believe she could have done it. Whenever he expressed his feelings, she dismissed him-she had no time for anything he did/said. Everything was about her and what she wanted. When he said he wanted time for writing, she smugly told him she would always find time. She shows narcissistic tendencies, and I think she resented him for the accident with her son.
