Hi Josh! Love your channel. I planted a bunch of the "normal" kale a couple weeks ago. Wish I had known about this stuff. Also, just wanted to say that your videos are really helping in direct and indirect ways. Case in point; I started a garden after watching a bunch of your videos all winter. (I live in Minnesota so our growing season is just starting) and my neighbor, who I had scarcely spoken with before walked over to talk with me. I thought maybe to complain about my garden beds. Instead, she told me that she had always wanted to have a garden but she didn't know where to start. Plus, she has a bad knee so she didn't think she could do all the required kneeling and bending. I immediately recalled your words about "thinking abundantly" and long story short I offered to build her a 3 foot tall raised keyhole garden (9ftx6ft) and help her plant it. she is so happy with her little garden and it makes me so happy to see her out there in the morning with her coffee checking on her veggies. Your videos are helping people be better neighbors and they are even helping people who have not even watched them yet. Kudos brother!

I love kale. Living in the city I buy mine at the store and you're right about the bundle size, they tend to be very big. Honestly much too big for a single person household. But you can prep it and freeze what you're not ready to eat. Try it in country omelettes or in a stir fry. But lately I've just been making kale and cheese pie. Yum!
Here in Europe we tend to mostly have the green curly stuff, btw.

I discovered your channel when you first started and subscribed. I watch most of your videos and then adapt what you say to my zone up here in eastern Ontario where our growing season is short and the winters cold. I love your practicality and enthusiasm and no BS. Your biggest tip though was the tomato trellising system - it made a huge difference in production in my ⅛ acre kitchen garden. I had a good laugh when I saw that you use red Russian, which is the kale I only grow on my end - it resists the bugs and I use netting as I grow it as long as I can. I was concerned when you shut down your own operation and moved but there was no reason to worry. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge, it is appreciated. Kale-on (poor pun - carry-on!)! The other commentator nailed it with kale-it 😀

The full size Red Russian is a beast coming out of winter into early spring(over wintered). Another point about the transplants is the seed cost. Red Russian is affordable but I want to start playing with some of the newer specialty stuff that looks really cool and the only way I can justify paying that much for seed(some of that stuff is pricey!) is to do transplants and be deliberate with every seed. Great video, thanks again.

I've planted Red Russian and Lacinato kale from seed in my raised beds. This was the beginning of May as we had torrential rain for most of April ( zone 7 in TN). It looks pretty good but not as tall as yours. Now we are having temps in the 90s! Should I harvest it or will it be OK after the heatwave which is expected to last another week? Enjoying your channel. Very helpful!

Josh Sattin I do that very same thing anytime I try something new for our area Josh and it usually doesn’t take long for the word to spread and I end up selling the whole bed.
I haven’t had the opportunity to even put out the first sign yet this year letting folks driving past what I have ready, I’ve been stating sold out just by folks stopping and asking if I’m gonna have such and such and they find out that cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, etc are in now and leave with 5 or 6 bags of stuff. I’m getting way behind on planting now because I’m always running out to the field and picking things for someone that just saw my fields and stopped in cause they thought it looked like a market garden field.
It’s been a crazy weather year so far but it appears it’s gonna be a fantastic year for us to sell!! Take care brother and stay safe out there!!

My seedlings now have 2 true leaves. I am wondering why they have tiny "hairs" on the stem and outer side of the leaves 😮

I keep them small by picking the leaves when they are 3-4" big. Pick from the outside first, new leaves grow from the middle. I love raw kale! Bonus: they tolerate snow. 👍
