Mary Sandeman (born 20 November 1948), better known by her former stage name Aneka, is a retired Scottish traditional singer. In 1981, she reached number one in the UK Singles Chart with her song "Japanese Boy". She was well known for the Oriental image she took on for the song. Singer of Scottish Gaelic songs
She’d been a successful singer and session musician in her own right before this - once it dropped they were forced to come up with a suitable image, cringe as it is! She did try and break out from its shadow and release a few songs under her own name, but they didn’t sell well. Mary herself wasn’t the biggest fan of her biggest hit and doesn’t sing it anymore. Oh yes, their really getting in to it, Not!!😂😂
In many countries back then you were supposed to sit quietly during musical performances the same as you would at the cinema or theatre. It wasn't until the late 1980s here in Ukraine that you start to see the crowds go crazy. It's not that they don't like the music, it was just a different social standard the same way you wouldn't clap or make noise in the middle of a movie you like today.
@@Euromantique You shouldn't be clapping and making noise in a cinema...
Yes, that's exactly what I said. @@anonanon7497
👍 tyhle staré pecky jsou nadčasová super hudba ..... songy zpívají sportovci i dj hrají i na Ibize, za mně super ,že jsou❣️✌️🍻
It's cringing seeing some of the people's expressions in the crowd lol XD
I miss my japanese phone
Pwahahahaha lol. Can't stop laughing right now. ;D
When I first heard it I thought she was saying "I miss my Japanese home"
One of the very great songs from the 80s, why I did not hear this song for such a long time anywhere!
Quel plaisir de pouvoir l'écouter 😍Merci ❤💯❤
Entièrement d'accord avec toi 👍
@@dominique578 de rien 🙂
Never heard it before today and I love it!
Cool. I always thought this song was from middle 80s. I was surprised to learn that this amazing hit was made in 1981. It was before its time.
The beat is pretty early 80s tbh, the synthesizers were my really that developed in the early 80s
The syndrum gives it away as late 70s or very early 80s. Syndrums got replaced by Linn drum machines and the Roland TR series from 1981 on
It definitely was not before it's time. This sounds like something from the late 1970s. IDK how anyone could confuse this with a mid 80s song at all lmao.
1979 or 1980
A friend of mine used to play this song during all the 2019 when I told him I have a crush on a japanese guy.. at first, it was a little bit funny but now it's not like that. my (actually he was never mine) japanese boy moved to another state and I'm here really missing those eyes.. those almond-shaped eyes
her voice is weirdly catchy
80s best era music
40 years ago and still fresh and lovely 😊♥️ song ! It remind me the beautiful summer holiday spent on our shore sea …
What a cheerful crowd
Aneka ..I love You ❤

Brilliantly underrated voice
What an interesting song.! A big 80's fan, I'm frustrated this never charted in the USA and never knew of it's existence until recently!
The song was a big thing in Vice City.
@@iche9373 I never played it :(
@@mandabrewster you can play it on Smartphone for an obolus
Brilliant song, it would never be made today with cultural appropriation. How the 80s are missed.
Great memories from the 80's - time flies ! Miserable lot in the audience get up and dance !
They are very early woke brigade who think the song is racist
😂

Mary has a lovely voice - she’s a Scots folk singer. This is a one-off.
She’s apparently retired
It's not a one off. She did a couple of other singles as Aneka.
