  • Mandrake - The Sorcerers’ Root
    Associated: Mercury, Hecate
    Magical Form: Root
In superstition, people who pull up this root will be condemned to hell, and the mandrake root would scream and cry as it was pulled from the ground, killing anyone who heard it.
Known as the sorcerer's root the Mandrake is widely used in many forms of magic. Soak the root in water or brew in a tea and sprinkle this water around the home to prevent all evil and bad witchcraft. Do not drink the water or eat the root because the Mandrake is poisonous.
Carry the root in the pocket along with silver coins to increase wealth Use whole root to create powerful love puppets.
Choose two whole roots that resemble the human form. Bind them together with red string or cord to create a long-lasting relationship between you and your mate.
In the Bible’s Book of Genesis, mandrake root helps Rachel conceive Jacob.
Greek mythology, Circe and Aphrodite are thought to use it as an aphrodisiac.
A member of the nightshade plant family, mandrake contains hallucinogenic and narcotic alkaloids. Dioscurides, a first-century Greek physician, tells us that a “winecupful” of mandrake root (that is, mandrake root boiled in wine) was used as an anesthetic in ancient Rome.
They have long been used in magic rituals, today also in contemporary pagan traditions such as Wicca and Odinism.
