    What if the key to happiness and fulfilment was not changing our external circumstances but learning to appreciate and understand our inner world? This powerful idea is at the heart of this week's conversation with Buddhist monk and author Haemin Sunim.
    Haemin is a Zen Buddhist teacher and the author of two Sunday Times bestselling books, including his very latest, the beautiful: ‘When Things Don’t Go Your Way: Zen Wisdom for Difficult Times.’
    Haemin was born in South Korea, educated at Berkeley, Harvard, and Princeton, and received formal monastic training in Korea. When not travelling to share his teachings, he resides in Seoul, where he founded the Dharma Illumination Zen Center, offering meditation retreats and counselling programs.
    We begin our conversation exploring the tension between personal aspirations and societal expectations, what Haemin calls the "me of me" versus the "me of others." This internal conflict, he believes, is at the root of much of our stress and unhappiness.
    We also discuss the importance of slowing down and being present, and how, in our rush to achieve and reach our goals, we can often miss the beauty and richness of our current experiences. With that in mind, Haemin shares some practical tips for mindfulness, that can help us reconnect with ourselves and the world around us.
    A key theme in this conversation is the interconnected nature of all things. Haemin explains how adopting this worldview can profoundly affect our happiness and sense of purpose. We also discuss the power of listening, the importance of solitude, and the crucially important notion that we always have a choice in how we interpret and respond to life's challenges. And, even when things don't go our way, there's always an opportunity for growth and unexpected joy.
    This is a beautiful conversation, full of deep and practical insights that I’m sure will help you find greater peace, purpose and contentment.

    I love the open mindset being described as "don't know mind!" I'm 73, and want to develop that because my "know what I want" mind has backfired so many times!❤

    ❤ "Don't Know Mind" Makes so much sense looking back at things that's seemed awful at the time had a greater purpose for good in my life. It also takes the pressure off of everyone being perfect.

    I'm already grinning with gratitude Dr Chatterjee, that you and this wonderful Buddhist Monk, Haenin Sunim, have got me thinking about this, and have already experienced some release of stress/worry connected sensations that bothered me for the last few days! Facing the negative feelings. I often thought exercise and meditation would melt them away without my first facing the truth! Wow;❤

    I loved this conversation! Many thanks to both of you 😊🙏 There’s another guest who I think would be wonderful to interview: Mingyur Rinpoche. He’s a monk and meditation teacher (from the Tibetan tradition) from Nepal and he’s written some wonderful books including The Joy of Living and In Love with the World. He also has a very helpful TH-cam channel with many short teaching videos that explain the concepts of Buddhism and meditation in a way that’s very easy to understand and apply. He’s quite well known, but if you’re not aware of him and his teachings already, you’re in for a treat 🤓

    Helpful interview and I appreciate you including survival in the equation. The question is how to integrate spiritual principles with survival. Is it possible? How can people who are in survival help themselves via spirituality. I feel that is an important subject because there are levels of existence and we do need to acknowledge and talk about the survival part and how to work with that. Fear is an aspect that we may ignore working with. Healing the soul of people like Trump, Putin, Netanyahu and that North Korean buy is so crucial - I realize that these beings have had problems in the way they are raised and also the countries they live in... How can we affect a shift on the planet by also working on the inner Trump, inner Putin etc... that hunger for power and existence. People addicted - how can we break the cycles. We start with ourselves for sure but then, even with ourselves, we may need to transform the darker emotions while having compassion to the oppressed and the oppressors. How can we stop pointing fingers and do the deeper transformative work. Is it possible to bring our planet to full balance so that every being is no longer in survival? The super rich and the super poor. ..... Is it possible?? That is what I grapple with!

    Interconnectedness and other people will come to help when I am in trouble.This is ultimately about social justice. The core of exercising social justice and advocacy is about all those with means and abilities having their eye on interconnectedness off the meditation cushion. This ultimately involves politics and policy.

    I totally agree that peace of mind is paramount for true happiness BUT I don't know how anyone these days can experience peace when there is so much suffering especially by children and animals caught up in today's wars. To overcome this overwhelming emotion, many spiritual teachers advocate detachment. However, if we all detached, in my opinion, no one would try to do anything to help. Should we turn a blind eye then to these problems?

    • @melliecrann-gaoth4789
      @melliecrann-gaoth4789 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yes there is huge application for detachment and interconnection but the conversation does not get highlighted.
      Social justice at every level- where egos are checked and the core business is focused on and refocused on, beginners mind honoured which then brings the organisation and those involved back to the core focus. This is ignored. Anyone who is on the cushion has a lot of opportunities to walk the walk, the true road to honouring interconnection is about working for social justice without ego, that is detachment.
