    Soooo glad to see you go for flounder. It’s one of the best eating fish imo. This is the first video I’ve seen of anyone catching them in the surf and I’m impressed w your success. Keep em coming Matt!

    I really enjoyed watching that, actually, despite the slower pace. Keeper flounder are totally worth it and that was just relaxing to watch! Thanks

    I watched my husband catch flounder in the gulf off piers in the bay and he has used minnows , grubs but the most success was with fresh croaker cut into a 1 inch by 6 inch strip and slowly retrieving it , he put flounder fisherman off the big pier to shame using croaker and they laughed at first till he caught 5 flounder around the pilings. The bait has to be fresh he said his uncle taught him years ago and he forgot about it for years then started using croaker, we do not fish like we use to but wanted to pass the trick on, most likely any fresh bait will work but croaker stays on the hook longer .

    LOVING this...made me recall a visit to Yellowstone in '76. We could not fish within 300yds of the mouth of the river (number moght be off a bit but you get the idea). The limits on cutthroat were 2 but under 14", not over. I ws fishing about 20yds outside the river mouth along with about a dozen others (awwwk!!) but had been there for almost all day simply because this was a once in a lifetime visit and my first. I had caught about 10 fish at least 18" up to a 26"er (best catch ever for me, still is). Then there was a mayfly hatch and we all caught fish as fast as we could cast. This lasted for about 4hrs!! I was just turned 15 but was avid fishing person since I was about 6yrs....but just before sundown (oh, my mom found her way to the spot because she hadn't heard from me since about 5am...hahaha) I had zero fish on the stringer. Caught one that was about 1/4" over and kept the thing. I've never broken the rules on fish but after catching almost 50 NATIVES all day I wanted to taste one for dinner...so I poached for the first and only time in my life. Making it more memorable was on the trail back from Yellowstone Lake to campground I turned a corner and in a small meadow was a MOOSE that seemed to be about 87ft tall with 12ft antlers calmly munching grass. I just stopped, not afraid at all but in awe of being about 15yds from this magnificent animal and it was calm and just looked at me, guess it sensed I was not close to a threat and went back to munching as I passed by. And yeah I know how dangerous that could have been in the spring not start of summer.
    Anyway your catching the halibut just teasingly close to the minimum brought back a cool memory, thanks man!!

    If you have taught me anything it's that shallow water can be very productive in the gulf. We are more limited up north as to when and what is shallow.

    Glad to see your channel growth seems to have speeded up. Young man with a wife and child needs the success! You've definitely got a niche....especially when you consider that probably a lot more people fish salt water from shore than from boats. I mean most vacationers bring a rod along. I remember the good old days when you didn't even need a license to fish salt water.

    What month is best for flounder? I live in Iowa and I'm a amputee (lost left leg). Where can I go to catch flounder. I can walk with my prostheses, but not long distances. Few hundred yards and I need to set down. I have a beach cart that I made from a pull behind golf cart. Should work good in sand, wheels are about 8 inch diameter. I'm retired and fish alot here in Iowa. For 17 years I have been going to Grand Isle Louisiana and fishing for a week to a month. Depending on the weather. Catch tons of bull reds but few smaller fish like trout and flounder. I usually go in February or March when is extremely cold in Iowa. I watch you and Brant every day. Very entertaining compared to other volleys. Thanks Mark Clemens.

    I am pretty sure those were summer flounder (in ocean and inlets only) and if so the males only grow to between 13” and 14”. So you could have been just been catching the males. Great job! Fun to watch.

    • @screwascreenname2662
      @screwascreenname2662 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true (summer flounder) or fluke up north are also found in back bays as well as brackish water. They will follow the food and when the water gets too hot a 14” fluke will swim out to deeper water. Idk know about the male female size differences

      I just refreshed my memory on specifics. I recommend you search for a TH-cam video of “Harry Daniels Southern Flounder”. He is a Phd at NC State University and he gives a presentation on Aquaculture of Southern and Summer flounder. Very informative. Take note of map at beginning showing range of fish in the US. I was wrong about the species in the Gulf. It is a Southern Flounder as per video. But note the later discussion of difference in male and female size. Being able to control the sex of fish (make them female) is the biggest challenge to Aquaculture of flounder in the US. They will figure it out one day. Fresh flounder are awesome, especially fried whole.

    Just a thought. I bought some orange electrical tape from an orange big box store and have measured up from the butt of my inshore rods to various lengths of "keeper" limits on fish. So on the tape I simply write the distance from the butt to the top of the tape at puppy drum, speckled trout, and flounder limits. That way I don't have to make the trek back and forth to my cart to see if its legal.

      and just a little bit less aggressive hookset after the first 5-10sec light slow tug. Especially when you're using braid. #1-2 kahle hook w/ 3-4" GULP swimming mullet rigged weedless works well. Heavier 1/4oz speck rigs bumped along slowly with a tiny piece of bacon(don't understand either, but it works good at times). just some options you might like to try at some point.

    I've had decent luck early in the morning walking down the beach and casting a bucktail jig parallel with the shore. In clear water you see the sand on the bottom explode and you are on!

      Based on what I saw on a recent flounder gigging trip in the surf, this sounds like a very effective method.

    New Penny Gulp shrimp and a pink jighead. Just drag it along. Flounder candy.

    You need to invest in a fish stretcher to make them all legal... hahaha.
