During the Strange Little Girls cycle she was taking songs from male musicians and reinterpreting them from varying women's perspectives. It's intended to have an entirely different feel from the original.
For these B-sides, there's no text material available on the sort of "character" she wanted to portray, but you can still feel her, probably the "wife" in the song. There's this... softness about her voice here. Probably didn't need to go to the main album because the political message of the cover wouldn't be that different from that of the original. Really sensitive of Alice Cooper to write a song like this.
@@MephProductionthe urban legend is that Vincent Furnier was sentenced to probation for domestic violence against his girlfriend at the time and part of the probation was that he had to raise awareness of domestic violence. So Vincent along with Wagner wrote this song to please the court.
Man's got his woman to take his seed He's got the power - oh She's got the need She spends her life through pleasing up her man She feeds him dinner or anything she can She cries alone at night too often He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all Only women bleed (x3) Man makes your hair gray He's your life's mistake All you're really lookin' for is an even break He lies right at you You know you hate this game He slaps you once in a while and you live and love in pain She cries alone at night too often He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all Only women bleed (x7) Black eyes all of the time Don't spend a dime Clean up this grime And you there down on your knees begging me please come Watch me bleed Only women bleed ...
I work with girls who are half my age. One of them is going through heartbreak and it reminds me of when i was 25 and going through heartbreak. And it makes me want to hear this over and over.
Put a good pair of headphones on & listen to this turned up. Its almost like Tori is sitting right next to you singing softly in your ear with her "breathy" singing style. I was listening to this on the bus with my phones on, feet crossed, head back, eyes closed, experiencing shivers and goosebumps... kinda fell half asleep, & kinda dreamed she was sitting next to me singing in my ear - so i put my hand on the inside of her thigh...it was a dude... we both screamed. Sportstalk radio ONLY now!!
What I like the most about Tori, is she likes to play in the Flat Keys, just like me! For example, this is in A flat Major, her "God" is in B flat minor, and her "Smells Like Teen Spirit cover is in F minor (like the original). Songs in Sharp Keys, Like E Maj, C# minor, etc. are great and awesome, but whenever I'm noodling around making up shit at a piano, I gravitate towards the Flats.
Wow, this was a while ago. My perspectives have changed quite a bit since then. Tori Amos actually does a pretty good job at this. To be honest I'm just glad the musicality of the track hasn't been replaced with buzzing noises like a lot of tracks nowadays.
You know, I love Tori and I love Alice (Vincent). I like this, but I prefer the original. I'm not saying I hate this by any means and I believe she did an amazing job. Thank you VERY much for posting this. :)
@someknave also Janis Joplins cover of Me and Bobby McGee by Kristopherson who personaly told Janis that it was as if he had written the song for her...some covers are great others just shouldnt be done...i kinda like this one..its her own version of the song and thats ok
I didn't say that they need a lecture in music if they "liked" Tori's version. It's just that people often think the cover version is better than the original. There are far worse covers than this out there, like the Scissor Sister's cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. No argument, that one does suck.
This was a project of *deliberate* perspective flips/reinterpretations; It wasn't meant to be like the original, but from a "feminine" perspective - and while there are sufficient girls who do rock & metal & stuff (*raises hand*) Tori simply isn't one of them. It's probably meant to explore how the unfortunate wife feels... Because, if she's just gonna imitate the original, what's the point in making another version at all? She's not gonna top the original artist at his own game.
Probably people who prefer originals over covers. If it was the other way around, some people would be upset as well. And some people just lk to be upset.
Dave Green, your question is very silly, people are different and have different tastes. I like Tori, but not everything she sings. I find it often exaggerated and sounding artificial, too thoughtful, too planned, too unnatural in certain interpretations. In time, the best interpretation I've heard of this song was made by Cris Farlowe, but it's just my opinion and my taste..
thanks, I've known her for a long time ... I had videos of her in good quality VHS, but I always found her exaggerated in her interpretations ... something like ... I'm the best, I'm hot, I'm sexy and powerful .. If I'm not mistaken, she's a lion sign and that makes perfect sense ... that huge ego. Like I said, I like her, I just find her unnaturally exuberant.
loved the Alice version.....when i saw him at ally apally in london, I was thinking...is this a cover of a contry westermn song? Searched..and found this. its got all the hall marks of C&W sog L:p
there are cover's that plain beat the original. For instance I love Nine inch Nails but Cash's cover of hurt blows away the original. I think strange little girl is better than the original. Soundgarden has a shit load of covers that are better than the originals. Overgeneralisations like this a fairly meaningless.
@soulcapture5 Best "covers" are not impersonations. They can vary as much or as little as needs be..but they shouldnt be copies, Westkife "west end girls" springs to mind as a BAD example. Sing it the same...but no where near as good as B.Joel.
I'm sorry but this one just annoys me. It's not horrible but anyone who thinks this is better than the original or even the Lita Ford version needs a serious lecture on music. This song is meant to be rock, not... whatever the hell this is.
Revisiting this song with all that’s happening in the world. Tori Amos is pure magic. Such an incredible cover….
She never ceases to amaze me. My favorite musician.
Tori is the most gorgeous female singer on the planet.
I had a religious experience watching Tori play two grand pianos at once singing this song in Sacramento.
im an alice cooper fan and tori fan and i never heard this! Awesome!

I love her album, made me discover great artists too
A beautiful version!
Tori Amos doing an Alice Cooper song. 2 of my very favorite artists combined. I. LOVE. THIS. ♥ ♥ ♥
Alice Coopers version is also a cover
Who did they cover? I'm pretty sure it's their original. And, if it's not, I want to hear the original;)
@@benjaminbrown4106 it's wasn't, it was written by Alice Cooper and Dick Wagner. From Alice's first solo album

I like Julie Covington singing this. She brings a certain feeling of this song.
Not a forgotten cover. I love the emotion in this, especially through the first chorus.
Alice Cooper.. can't beat him, but Lita Ford also recorded this song.... and it is fantastic... but who dosen't love Lita?

This is pure gold 🙏
Dude, that was three years ago. My perspective's changed quite bit since then. These days I'm just happy it isn't dub-step.

Nice interpretation of the classic Alice Cooper song.
good to see the twitter mob hasnt found this. Love Tori since mid 90s
No words for this interpretation. Stunning!

Incredible cover!
gorgeous image of Tori
Excellent !!!!!!!!!!
More an interpretation than a copy. Tori is the MASTER of it. Her covers are amazing.
Its good, but nothing beats the original in any cover.

wow, this is such a beautiful song, I've never heard it before! Thank you!!!
insane to the membrane
Who are these people who don't like Tori's piano covers?
They don't know what their missing, Tori rocks!!!!

Omg she kills ever song she covers
Rolling in the deep
Professional wrestler Mick Foley idolizes her. Read his books for proof.
It`s fantastic!
@angiegeorge Well Said!
I don't think it's bad, I just don't think the style suits it very well. Just not my kind of thing.
I would never edorse 'covers' but I make an exception for Tori...even tho she is no where near the original...sorry Billy ..how Heidi :)
A Melhor versão dessa música é com a Tina Turner.

She skipped the breaks, too important in the song to just skip over.

@FavreianVengeance To you it sucks. To others it doesn't. It's called having an opinion. Get over it.
My ears are bleeding
:D she was forced with gun near head to sing ? or drunk or high ? :D :D
I know she's going for a slow tempo, but this is a little too sleepy.
Give it a rest love.
Boozer voice ... :(
There's no connection between her singing and the real meaning and emotion of this song. Feel free to try again ... with feeling.
