  • A rather touching piece, beautifully sung here by the famous Welsh boy treble - now baritone - Aled Jones.
The song "Silent Worship" is a 1928 adaptation by Sir Arthur Somervell of the aria "Non lo dirò col labbro" (I will not say it with my lips, they do not have the courage) from Handel's 1728 opera Tolomeo (Ptolemy). Somervell's English-language adaptation is for voice and piano, and it has remained a popular classic in song recitals and home music-making. Other arrangements of Somervell's translation include voice accompanied by a modern symphony orchestra (as here), and male choir.
    Lyrics
Did you not hear My Lady
    Go down the garden singing?
    Blackbird and thrush were silent
    To hear the alleys ringing.
Oh saw you not My Lady
    Out in the garden there?
    Shaming the rose and lily
For she is twice as fair.
Though I am nothing to her
Though she must rarely look at me
And though I could never woo her
I love her till I die.
    Surely you heard My Lady
    Go down the garden singing?
    Silencing all the songbirds
    And setting the alleys ringing.
But surely you see My Lady
    Out in the garden there,
    Rivalling the glittering sunshine
With a glory of golden hair.
    Paintings
    Pre-Raphaelite. Details upcoming...

So lovely, Aled has taken the purity of his treble voice and made it something sublimely simple in his adulthood, he could be singing in the room for you personally, nothing artificial or constrained, a natural musicality and clarity of diction. Perfect. -

AntPDC - Handel. Silent Worship - Aled Jones Baritone.
This is absolutely delightful. Its so Aled. From a choir boy, (Snow Man) comes to mind.
He has a truly ‘Angelic ‘ quality in his voice.
This song is perfect for him.
This is what Aled does and he does it with panache and perfection.
For a Sunday morning this piece of history, through music cannot be said any clearer.
The video photography was a picture perfect 👌
Well Done Anthony. You send good quality music and pictures of historical facts, what more can anyone ask for.
I look 👀 forward to your next gem 💎 Thank You 🙏

Thank you Valerie. I find this piece most touching - almost as heart-breaking as "Fruits of Silence". Very best wishes, Anthony.

One of my favourite songs we sang school where I also discovered the Pre-Raphalites. Stunning together.

For me, another Handel discovery, thanks. Plus your posting of the pre-raphaelite paintings (along with recents of Andrew Lloyd Webber's collection - would that I should be that wealthy) are confluent with my (re)discovery of this school of painting. Sign of ageing - used to poo-poo this era as hopelessly romantic even after the impressionists. And thanks , too, for posting the verses. Another of your mini-masterpieces, Anthony. Thank you.

As ever PJ, thank you. Even in my early years I was captivated by everything romantic - both in painting and music - even though that aesthetic wasn't exactly à la mode during my childhood. I suppose it's because I've never really outgrown my youthful idealism: of fairy tales, happy endings, and an impossibly perfect balance of nature and beauty. Should I be grateful? I'm not sure. Best wishes, Anthony.

The powerful effect of the music, which is sublime to my ears, is heightened by the paintings, because I studied the Pre-Raphaelites and was enchanted by their pictorial narratives of tales within tales. The combination of paintings and music (very different from Handel’s original) created a new experience, as lovely as each heard and seen individually.

The lyrics are clear: the lady had GOLDEN hair! Lovely melody of course, and beautifully sung, but the pathetic, self-deprecating lyrics wouldn't impress any lady of MY aquaintance.

    • @renzo6490
      @renzo6490 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What lyrics do you find self deprecating, specifically?
Though I am nothing to her
Though she must rarely look at me
And though I could never woo her
I love her till I die.
I don’t think the man is saying he is worthless or even unworthy of her.
Only that his standing in society prevents him from pursuing her with any chance of success

The mating impulse and all of its ramifications seem to dominate and motivate our every thought and action.

Laboured. Contrived. Off ‐putting. The diction, particularly, is so over emphasised that it gets in the way of the overall presentation. The whole effort is very disappointing indeed, almost laughable.
