Adrian Preda for tight joints, hit one of the parts with a rounded hammer, once parts are together and in place, moist the joint and the fibers that you hammered down will expand, filling any gaps making the joint seamless.
you guys a deserve a big respect, as a carpenter waching videos maybe years, and first time in my live writhing a comment... there is a carpenters and there is a masters .I enjoy waching it thanks a lots
Can’t get enough guys. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve seen it. Trying to build a Japanese toolbox myself. Man it’s harder they it looks. Had to redo a lot of wood pieces. Maybe I’ll have it by the end of 2020. 😂 Keep building my friend. Thanks
must be nice to have thousands of dollars of equipment to do it on. Guess I prefer to see people like me using tools that a normal person can afford or do it by hand, the work of craftsman... Thanks for sharing.
I just want to point you paid so much attention to details, not only in your wood working, but the edition of this video. I mean, min 5:45, the way you synch the chisel taps with the beat of the song, just awesome man. hats off.
I gotta ask. Why would you use screws. And just glue the bottom on? Seems like the bottom will eventually break off. And the screws kinda ruin all of the time spent cutting mortises.
Your welcome. I just watched your video on the hand held router.... very impressive and inspiring. I may put some of my stuff on here one day if I ever get the cohoonas !
Excellent! Editing makes everything look great! 90% of the creation of this box was two men painstakingly marking and cutting wood fiber to fit to 1/64 of an inch and (probably smaller) of an opening. Tedious work but the end product is well worth it.
I wanted to make something similar to this but bigger. And I wanted to not use a lid but a small workbench as a lid. Do you think that‘s possible? Because I really like that idea
Love you content here. As a beginner I do wonder about the bottom wood movement. Is the problem mitigated by having the frame of the box super sold via dowel / pegs / screws / very precise glue-up ?
+Brian Zimmerman I belive you may refer to that mini workbech with vise. There are 4 videos making it, you can check it in my videos tab of the channel
In that position, where those 3 screws are, wood movement is minimal, so there is no issue with them. Instead of the through tenons, on the frame, if there where screws probably will have been some problems.
Ciao Adrian ti volevo chiedere info su quelle squadrette da macchinista della shinwa, a parer tuo dovendone prendere solo 2 misure del set di quali consiglieresti?
Great stuff! .. with your saw guides, can they only be used on saws with little to no set? as I assume if they do have noticable set, it will wear into the guide? thanks!
Thank you! You can use any saw I believe, it will wear a little but will stop after the set has protrude into the wood. You can see in my dovetail guide video that I added a thin plastic in order to offset the blade set off the wood. Not to the one straight you saw in this video, it was build more as a test guide and did not care too much.
VERY well done. I have a question. Why is it that you used the Tung Oil? Most people use BLO (I personally hate BLO, due to the use of Japanese driers mixed with the oil and the problems with spontaneous combustion). Some people still use their own raw Linseed or flaxseed from the cooking section (no chemical driers). My favorite oil is walnut, the other drying oil. It is what I used on my last project and would use on every project for the rest of my life (including the cabin I'll be building soon) if it weren't so expensive. Also, do you buy unrefined tung oil, or do you buy it processed? And if purchased unprocessed, do you process it in any way? I prefer cold pressed, raw oil from the health food store. Thanks, have a great day.
Thank you Todd for your comment! Actually is the first time I've used tung oil, and I think for sure I will never use BLO :) I've used linseed till now on smaller stuffs, they got very yellowish, but didn't cared to much. Also now, on this toolbox I applied first two coats of BLO, but I was really disappointed, very very yellow-orange-brown, practically destroyed the maple color. So, i've completely sanded again, outside only, and applied tung oil. Kinda ruined a little the straight planed chamfers, but at least the color is acceptable. Other than these two so far I've used danish oil on some boxes, I like it, you still can feel the wood texture and same time have a protective lacquer on the wood. I don't know the state of this tung oil I've used, i will ask my friend collaborator :) about it and revert to you. What I noticed on tung which I really like, is that dries quickly than BLO at the level of wiping the excess, maybe is more viscous, at linseed even after a day I can have liquid spots coming out.
Wow..what a wonderful experience man. Boxes came out awesome. I relly enjoyed working with you on this collaboration project.!
Now back to the drawing board for the next one :D
Gorgeous as always , amazing work you two!
Thanks GG!

How pleasing to watch your clean accurate work with perfectly sharpened hand tools. beautiful simplicity, the essence of Japanese design. Thank you!
Thank you Bruce! Indeed, a little more effort in sharpening, but after that is just a pleasure to work.

Thank you for your comment and nice words! Glad you enjoyed our project!
That’s the nicest looking Japanese toolbox I’ve seen. Love the through-tenons.
Great project. I bought the plans to build a box like this for my grandson's Christmas present.

Greetings from Japan. Very good for both the production of the tool box and the video.
Thank you! I think you are my first comment from Japan who appreciate my japanese woodworking projects :D
Is it really true way to glue bottom of the box, what happens in case of season temperature changes?
That's just amazing workmanship - superb boxes!
You have an amazing touch with chisel and shaves. Absolutely beautiful. Very very impressed
Bonne idée et surtout très belle réalisation. Du beau boulot ! Congratulations from France.
Merci beaucoup Herve!
Now, now! You need a separate insert for the Planes!!!!
Excellent work!!!!!
Wow, they look wonderful. When you put in the little caps over the screws, that was the best part! - Clint
Thanks a lot! Ha ha, yes, I was a little concern that I will not be able to press them evenly, but was good in the end.
must be nice to have thousands of dollars of equipment to do it on.

Two of my favourite woodworkers in one video. Thanks
fabulous collabs...the result turn out awesome...can't wait to see more projects in the future....make it once a month
Thanks man! Lol, this one took two months maybe :) We will try as many as we can. Fore sure soon will be another. Thanks!
Excellent job, well done. I like that the 2 boxes where not identical, they had a little difference in detail.
Thank you very much! Indeed, the idea was for each to make o box for its own need, they turn out very well and useful in the end. Thanks!
nice project.the boxes are awesome.the closure is simple, but ingenious.

I really want to build one of these. How do you accommodate seasonal wood movement? Do you select quarter sawn pieces for the top and bottom?
Useful & Wonderful ..

I was thinking the exact same thing about the screws LOL That's a really nice tool box
Nice work! I love the Japanese woodworking and joinery.
Do you share the drawing with us?
Thanks! Send me an email
Hey question about the screws, how did you account for wood movement using screws? Thanks.

A deux pour cette bouse prétentieuse ! Surtout pour sortir une petite boîte avec des outils hors de prix😂😂😂

Adrian Preda I really loved the ruler bending to make the curves! That was genius lol
With tooth sticks holders, that's unique I think :D Thanks!
Wonrderful work! What kind of wood do you use?
+Bruno John Wilfahrt Hi, thanks! Maple and walnut, both european.
Interesting Video. How did you get those Japanese tools?
+PhonicDragon thanks! From various shops, in europe 😁 but all made in japan
