- HEAVEN ABOVE ME, The Jets, (Rare) (Gee #1020) 1956
Flipside: MILLIE BROWN - Here is another really great unknown up-tempo song from my music collection. The Jets aka The Mello-Tones hailed from Harlem, New York. Group members were Ray Hulbert (lead, 1st tenor), Joe Lipscomb (2nd tenor), Oliver James (baritone) and Louis O’Neil (bass).
The group members were neighborhood friends who grew up on 132nd Street in New York's section of Harlem. In 1953, responding to the R&B vocal group phenomenon taking place, they got themselves together and decided to form a vocal group. The members were between fifteen and eighteen years old.
They retained the services of manager Cliff Martinez but got their recording contract because of Hulbert's persistence with Decca Records management. They took the name, The Mello-Tones.
Please Note: This Mello-Tones group is not the group that recorded “TONITE, TONITE (Herald #502) 1957…which later had their name changed to The Mello-Kings after it was discovered that another Mello-Tones group recorded “ROSIE LEE” (Gee #1037) 1957.
On April 6, 1954, The Mello-Tones had their first recording session. They recorded "MAN LOVES WOMAN/WINO'S ON PARADE" (Decca #48318) with Marga Benitez singing lead.
The Mello-Tones (without Marga Benitez) recorded "I'M JUST ANOTHER ONE IN LOVE WITH YOU/I'M GONNA GET (WHAT I CAME FOR LAST NIGHT)” (Decca #48319) 1954.
The record didn't sell particularly well, but the group toured the East Coast on the strength of it. Lack of success caused group member Louis O'Neil to leave, and he was replaced by Charlie Carrington.
Next, the group went to audition for George Goldner at Gee Records. He agreed to record them but insisted that they change their name to a more contemporary sounding one: The Jets was chosen by Goldner. The group didn't like the name change but went along with it.
Their only Jets record is this upload of "HEAVEN ABOVE ME”. It was recorded in April of 1956 and released in July and also failed to make any waves. According to my price guide, the value of “HEAVEN ABOVE ME” 25 years ago was $5,000.00…I have 10 copies, can you imagine LOL.
I remember buying this record along with all the Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, The Cleftones, The Heartbeats, The Harptones records (everything on the Gee label I could find that day) …back in the day, most record stores had their bins alphabetical by label. I destroyed the “G” bin that day, LOL…records were cheap back them. There were some auction outlets that sold records for 3 for a dollar!
“HEAVEN ABOVE ME” was written by Jets’ lead singer Ray Hulbert and credit was also given to George Goldner…it has a “GREAT” solo sax in the song!
Enjoy this really great unknown up-tempo song “HEAVEN ABOVE ME” by The Jets. This is Harlem, New York Doowop at its finest! - เพลง
