- WHY DO YOU CRY, The Charts, (Everlast #5002) 1957
Flipside: DANCE GIRL - Here is another really great unknown ballad from my music collection. The Charts hailed from Harlem, New York. Group members were Joe Grier (lead), Steve Brown (first tenor), Glenmore Jackson (second tenor), Leroy Binns (baritone) and Ross Buford (bass).
The Charts first called themselves The Thrilltones practicing on Harlem street corners and building hallways while getting ready for the Apollo Theatre Amateur night. Their amateur night appearance at the Apollo didn’t go so well but they got a chance to meet Les Cooper of The Whirlers and The Empires who led them to meet Danny Robinson, owner of Everlast Records.
The Charts got a recording contract with Everlast. Their debut single for Danny Robinson’s Everlast label was “DESERIE” (Everlast #5001). It would become their signature song. It charted nationally on Billboard September 1957 for 4 weeks and reached #88. First time out, a giant hit for The Charts and Everlast Records.
Enjoy this really great unknown ballad “WHY DO YOU CRY” by The Charts, a song that’s admired by all record collectors with Joe Grier singing lead. This is Harlem, New York doowop at its finest!!
Great tune! My favorite from The Charts too.
Hi Linda, always nice to hear from you. One of my favorites too!
This and "Deserie" really define the doowop genre. Fantastic!
Steve, The Charts, very talented vocal group...their music is not known to most. You're so right, "WHY DO YOU CRY" and DESERIE" are "FANTASTIC. I also love their up-tempo stuff, "DANCE GIRL" and "I'VE BEEN WONDERING" both are uploaded on our channel!
Thanks Mintrecords4ever, super ballad with Joe Grier's fabulous falsetto. It was the A-side of Dance Girl. The Charts are still very popular with the Pittsburgh oldies crowd.
Hi Jack, we uploaded the flipside "DANCE GIRL" 4 years ago on our channel. The Charts were a "GREAT" doowop group...nice to have your support for our channel. Thank you!
Had them all but this remains my favorite..love the bio..tthks
Brooklyn Mint, The Charts were one badass doowop group...so much talent! I have all their records too.
It’s between this and “My Diane” for me Ken.
thank you Mr. Mint for this all time fave. A few years back you posted a great cover by Little Isidore & The Inquisitors (with our pal Wayne Smith R. I. P.)
Philly Mint, you have a great memory. We uploaded Little Isidore's version (April 3, 2020) 4 years ago...Wayne Smith is sadly missed.
Thanx, Mr Mint. My favorite by the Charts. I understand that Joe Grier also played sax on Wiggle Wobble.
Hi Al, how are you? It's been a while since we have heard from you. Mrs. Mint sends a big hello...not sure about Joe Grier playing the sax!
@@mintrecords4ever I'm doing well and I hope you are too. Give my regards to all of the Mints. I read somewhere a while ago about Grier on Wiggle Wobble, but it might be a conspiracy theory lol.
Al, LOL...I'll check into it!
One of my favorite groups of the era. All their songs were amazing and this is no exception. Hope you’re doing well Ron, been away from TH-cam for a while.
Rhode Island Mint, I must admit, it seemed odd not hearing from you in a while. All OK? If I had your phone #, I would have called you to make sure all is well. There are many subscribers that I have become close to that we discuss this music outside of TH-cam. Kenny (Brooklyn Mint) has become a very close friend, we talk a lot!
Ron, TH-cam keeps deleting my response to you after three attempts. Such a pain.
Just curious, how did you leave the message above? TH-cam posted it???
For some reason that one went through but my other attempts failed.
Ron, for some reason TH-cam will not let me respond to your comment. I’m doing good thanks for asking. I recently got on FB, I can send you a friend request there if you’d like.
Rhode Island Mint, unfortunately, I don't do Face Book. Here's my cell # (609-335-7944) and my email - ronobie@aol.com

Does anyone write love songs anymore? Bring them back!
Dennie, they don't know how to write love songs in today's day and age. They are not romantic enough.
@@mintrecords4ever They know how to write misogynistic lyrics, but lack romance in their world. What happened to our country?
Not like this!
