      @@JeremyGoneWildPets I had the same experience, thank you so much for explaining how to keep my cycle going. For the record, I was looking up "replace filter cartridge with reusable media lose cycle" and sometimes threw the word aquarium in there since covid made instances of the word "filter" skyrocket, and sometimes replaced "lose" with "keep". All the other videos talked about how it was a good idea, and even explained what to do, but you're the only one who talked about keeping the cycle.

    I habe a variety of AquaClear and SeaChem Tidal HOB's (the SeaChems are slowly replacing the AquaClears) and on all of them I run a prefilter sponge on the intake tube for mechanical filtration. This lets me use the whole filter body for bio filtration using ceramic ring media in a couple of netbags.

    Nice video. In minute 6:07, you indicate to cut the filter floss from old cartridge. After removing the carbon and rinsing it in old tank water, do we reuse that carbon in the new setup or do we fold the old cartridge in half with the rinsed carbon and stick that between the new filter floss and biomedia? My original and new cartridge has been running for a little over 5 weeks. My new tank is still approaching the last phase of its cycle. I though carbon goes bad after 4 weeks and can harm your water?

    • @neilmartin99
      @neilmartin99 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't really need the carbon in your tank.
      Also, the blue cartridge holder is made to house bacteria.
      In short, just toss the dirty cartridge away and you should be just fine.

  • @dandiefenbaker6750
    @dandiefenbaker6750 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    With this type of setup how often do you need to replace media/filterfloss/sponge? I know with the cartridges it requires a monthly change due to the carbon going bad. So im just curious how long this lasts and how to keep up with the maintenance for a DYI type filter so that I can continue to be successful.

    • @JeremyGoneWildPets
      @JeremyGoneWildPets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Dan Diefenbaker the sponge and the bio media should never be changed, just rinsed in old tank water. The filter floss should only be changed when it starts to fall apart. It too can be rinsed but it’s a little more difficult to rinse.

    • @dandiefenbaker6750
      @dandiefenbaker6750 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@JeremyGoneWildPets Thank you, When do you rinse the sponges out? When they get full of junk?(about every month)? Does this allow for the beneficial bacteria to stay in the sponge when rinsing in old tank water and also helps to remove all the excess junk|? This has been very helpful!

    • @JeremyGoneWildPets
      @JeremyGoneWildPets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Dan Diefenbaker rinsing in old tank water “as needed” gets rid of the junk and debris without exposing the sponge to the chlorine that is found in tap water. So the beneficial bacteria is still very much alive and in tact due to not being exposed to chlorine. I usually rinse my sponges once every month or two depending on how heavily stocked the tank is. As I have several tanks, some are more heavily stocked than others. But I have been using the same sponges and bio media for over two years.

    This is the exact video I was looking for. As someone who started a tank with the hang over & carbon & lost a few fish at the start & had to do a 75% water change after a day; I ordered some media & sponges & I’m going to switch it up when they come. Nice to know to keep the floss from the carbon cartridge cause I would’ve just tossed it. After the switch, how long will that floss be good for & can it eventually be tossed after the tank gets acclimated to the sponge/media method? And those are basically used forever & only rinsed every month or so in used tank or treated water?

    • @JeremyGoneWildPets
      @JeremyGoneWildPets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I generally keep the floss until it starts to literally fall apart. It can be cleaned in old tank water along with the bio media and the sponge. As for how often you clean the media, that depends on how heavily stocked the tank is.

    Nice video, however that blue plastic grid in the filter is also meant to be surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on so that you don't lose the cycle when replacing the cartridge. I've never lost my cycle throwing away cartridges or filter floss. Its not as much surface area as sponge or ceramic but thats what it is made to do.That said reusable media is nice. With cartridges you pay for convenience. Its just a matter of whether someone is willing to pay for it or not. Kind of like paying 2 dollars for a 2 liter drink at the gas station because it is convenient and avoids you having to go to walmart to get it for 99 cent lol. Either way nice instructional video. Not disagreeing with you at all, hope this isn't taken the wrong way. Just offering my opinion as well!

    Thank you this is such a helpful video!! Quick question.. can you add carbon pellets and the bio cubes/rings in the same mesh bag.. or do you have to separate these two ?

      Carbon is only good for about a month so it should be separate for disposal. Bio balls are to be rinsed in aquarium water and reused

    I'm sure this is great informational video. I would suggest to set up the camera on a tripod so more people can enjoy watching. Had to turn it off at 8:16 due to the camera movement and feeling sick. That said we used to put sponges in and wash them out. At this point we use bio-balls for that.

    May I ask if a hob filter can suck up all fish poops or just the poops near the intake?

    What is the upkeep? How do you clean it or what parts do you change out and how often?

  • @juli8vdberg562

    I use cottonpads instead of filterflos! Same cottonpaddies I use to remove make-up or clean skin etc

    does all this extra filtering make the pump work harder & maybe overheat ?

      I haven’t noticed any issues with the pump and I’ve been running my tanks like this for 2 years.

    Ok so when cleaning the filter items. Do I need to change out the filter floss with new filter floss? Or do I just have to wash the filter floss out in bucket of tank water and put it back in?
