    This is a killer feature! I just set up my home arcade to have a hidden NFC reader behind the bezel and now it’s like having game cartridges for my mister arcade! Lowering the friction for family and friends enjoying it.

    I'm actually right now creating my collection so I can have people when they come over actually using these to pick the game they want. This is such a cool feature! It elevates the Mister so much, Wizzo is really awesome!

      it would be cool to set it up with a 3d printed console and 3d printed carts with so when you insert the cart it loads the game.

    Super cool! My reader just arrived today. For those who think it's pointless, I'd say that it's a great project to do with your kids. The look on my daughters face when we wrote the first card using her phone, then tapped the MiSTer & the game started - amazing. We're going to build a case now, with some guide rails to make a 'slot' above the reader so that we can insert them to play, just like an old console. And you don't need hundreds of cards. Just a small library of favourites is way better than having a menu of thousands that never get played. Thanks for the great video Lu.

    print the cards directly on thick paper (and don't us printable nfc cards or printable stickers) this allows the use of both laser and incjet printers, more custom shapes, then just apply a cheap nfc sticker to it (they cost about 0.21 $ each for a NTAG215 504 byte version in bulk)

      good idea

    • @LusRetroSource
      @LusRetroSource  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good idea. You can even laminate the finished cards for further protection.

    • @arbbo1675

      How do you laminate cards? I considered getting sticker paper and printing on that with a color laser printer. Also what could I use for cutting labels from paper that is more accurate than a pair of scissors?

    • @arbbo1675

      What kind of paper do you suggest?

    If the tags are about the size of a trading card, maybe it would be smart to have them in a binder like a card collection.

  • @eastcoastloveaffair

    Most fun use case to me would be to place an nfc card in an empty snes or genesis cart. Would be difficult to get empty carts and labels tho. I like your printing covers on the cards. Not really a time saver for me but adds nostalgia and appreciation for the game you're playing like physically collecting for mister. Thanks for making this guide.

    • @alextirrellRI
      @alextirrellRI ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Reproduction empty carts are actually quite easy to find. I think people make the labels as well.

    • @ssokolow
      @ssokolow ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alextirrellRI Yeah. They're a bit pricey for what they are, but replacement shells and replacement labels of varying quality are available if you go looking. What DON'T seem to be available are new dust covers for SNES cartridges, despite replacement NES slip covers being readily available.

    I should write a script, to browse games and write tags right from the MiSTer...
    I need to get my ass around actually doing that

      @@LusRetroSource i did end up writing something. The only things missing now is function for writing or reading from the nfc tags, and also browsing inside zip files. But the ui and the skeleton of the program is pretty much done, save for improvements I want to do later down the line. (don't know if this will happen, but what about looking up metadata for games online? Idk maybe out of scope, maybe for an other program using the same UI as a skeleton)

    As someone without a large retro collection, I can't just put these on my game boxes.. I'm considering building something like a card catalogue with box art and an NFC on each one, but I don't want it to be less convenient than just browsing the list, it would need to show off the box art at a glance and make picking one up feel inviting. Not sure what approach to go for...

    • @LusRetroSource
      @LusRetroSource  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, something that can hold and display multiple cards for easy viewing would make things more inviting.

  • @Sampyla
    @Sampyla ปีที่แล้ว

    Would the script be modifiable so that it would run based on barcode? Then it would be possible to read barcodes from game boxes with smartphone or something and launch the game.

      Wizzo, released a mobile remote app for MiSTer and one of the wish list items is to implement this feature onto the app.

      People are talking about 3D printing a cover for the NFC reader so you can insert the NFC card like Hucard or SMS card.

    Pretty cool. thought I saw a demo where you can just start up the console (no ROM specified) with an NFC. Is that true?

  • @CartoonMonkeyStudio

    Can you get this working with commodore 64 d64 or prg titles? What about games that reside inside a zip file?

    • @LusRetroSource
      @LusRetroSource  ปีที่แล้ว

      I describe how zip files work in the video. Check the time stamps.
      If you can successfully get an MGL file to run a computer game, then you encode the NFC card with the path to the MGL file.

    love the video i want to do this. Also inkjet pvc cards would be great but having a hard time finding a printer that will do it. If you do find one let me know.

    • @LusRetroSource
      @LusRetroSource  ปีที่แล้ว

      Am still looking for a printer. They are very expensive. Someone in the comments here said they were going to try printing to thick paper and put stickers on the paper. I guess you can also laminate them to protect from damage.

  • @puertoricanguy999
    @puertoricanguy999 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish for the same concept like this, but with physical cartridges, cards, and discs instead, kinda like how Analogue Inc.'s products do it.

    • @LusRetroSource
      @LusRetroSource  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main reasons physical carts aren't supported is because there aren't enough GPIO pins available for cores to access physical cartridges. I did demonstrated a way to tap a physical cartridge to the NFC reader in the video.

    • @puertoricanguy999

      It's another perfect way to preserve video games, and maybe reduce a bit of physical space lol.

    Kinda pointless since scrolling through a list really isn't hard or time consuming. Also making cards for just one console library would take ages so you'd end up having to scroll anyway, for the games you don't have cards for. However it looks neat so I'm tempted, and this is a good guide for people who want to do it.

  • @coderkind
    @coderkind ปีที่แล้ว

    Not that keen on the environmental impact of using plastic cards to do something you can easily action otherwise.
