I have this great movie in Japanese double disc Blu-ray with much extras. The movie starts in 1945 with the sinking and then it continues from before Yamato was planned and to building it.
The irony of the fate of this behemoth was that it spent most of the war anchored at Truk because Japan didn’t have the oil or determination to put it at sea to confront the American Naval force’s that swept the Japanese carrier forces out of the war altogether. It’s final mission was a desperate attempt to lure the American fleet away from its beachhead support of the Philippines landings. The Japanese attempt to engage the US fleet in one final battle was too late and this battleship that never fired a shot at an American ship was sunk by naval aviation.
TBH, Yamato are both pride and failure. In the WOWS game itself, it shows how useless Yamato can be sunk by DD. Its just a huge piece of junk floating with NO rudder response. In the partial video above, its true that one of the captain says huge battleships are USELESS in the future war.
Just watched on Amazon Prime. If you get the chance, watch it. Near the end of the movie it explains what the true motivations were of the Admiral/architect that designed it. Cant say if they were actually portraying actual events or throwing in fluff for those that watch it.
Wows stats have nothing to do with the viability of the Yamato Class. DDs never got close to her, nor would they. Rudder response? Really, you’re taking a game that has speed boat submarines, tracking torpedoes, and carrier battles at 20k.
As a history buff, I am, extremely intrigued.
Okay, now I need a movie on Battleship Bismarck!
