Very practical tips, you have to do what works for you and your climate. Climate isn't stressed enough. Thanks for sharing.😎

I agree, climate and your local conditions (or microclimate). I know even moving a plant from one part of the garden to another can make a big difference in how a plant performs.

I love watching your videos, and I always learn something new. I have several roses myself. At first, I was scared and very cautious about pruning my roses, but now I don't give it a second thought. I just prune away.❤❤

Once you figure out they are like most any shrub it takes the intimidation out of the equation, then it is super easy and you can get this chore done faster and easier than ever before!

I have 2 Dr. Huey rose bushes, one is going to my sister and hopefully you a friend. I bought 2 beautiful roses from Weeks at a garden center after seeing an ad in a gardening magazine. I couldn't what happened to my roses. I figured it out this spring. I bought a beautiful rose from Aldi (😂) and it is a new breed and survived 1 year with me. I found a grower in Florida that grows by cuttings and that bush has 2 buds right now. I am going to try to propagating with a couple of cuttings as you have!

You can do it. I am testing another method for propagating and I will share the outcome once I see if it works or not. I wish you success!

Hi Pam, this was a great video. Can you comment on pruning rambling roses or do they follow same as climbing rose pruning. I'm not into hybrid roses either, I don't really like them. I have only DA and Eden roses those work for me and perform beautifully. I took a piece of my Boscobel that I accidentally cut off and just stuck it in ground beside it for fun......3 weeks later I have small tiny roots on the bottom of the stem, and I just potted it up. I hope it will become a new rose bush for me. I prune when I need to, dead heading and cleaning up, I love that you said there is no one size fits all. The only rule I follow is to cut back to 5 leaf. Hope you enjoy your day!

Whatever works for you is great. Yes that is the method of propagation the rosarian who did the demo uses, he says it works very well and you always know which rose it is as it is at the base of the mother plant. I did that when deadheading right before the big heat wave but it was toooo hot for them despite having good irrigation. So I will do it again now that it has cooled down a bit. Good question about rambling roses, they can have some very different pruning requirements. I will put that on my list to talk about. I will do a better demo of pruning roses in the Fall when I do my hard prunes.

I don’t understand the advantages of pruning roses in late fall, although it would certainly reduce the number of essential chores to complete in the spring. I live in a similar climate to you (south central Oregon, adjacent to the eastern slopes of the Cascade range), zone 6. I only grow own root roses, mostly Buck and Canadian varieties, along with some others such as cold hardy Austin roses. When a rose begin to produce new growth in the spring, whether from fall or spring pruning, when there is a late hard freeze, I would think the new growth will be damaged regardless of when the pruning occurred, depending on the hybrid. We can expect hard freezes where I live in the 2nd and 3rd week of June.

I must hard prune in Fall as the snows we get are wet and heavy. The weight of it rips and breaks the canes. A torn cane is more susceptible to disease and pests than a clean cut cane. Also I can't access my plants usually in late winter, early spring because of the depth of the snow. Yes, I agree, the new growth is damaged no matter when you prune so that is why I don't worry about any new growth occurring in Fall. Our snow here is called Sierra Cement, so that should tell you how wet and heavy it is.

@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse That makes so much sense. In the 25 years we have lived here, we no longer get tons of snow. The climate in our area has changed and we’re in a drought. We’re on the east side of the mountain range and only the big storms drop snow. We’re not far from Crater Lake which had normal snowfall last winter. I’m going to try your method of fall pruning on a few roses this fall because there are so many garden chores in spring that I always get behind. Thank you for your common sense approach to gardening.

@@jocelynmallory1796 I hope it works for you as well as it does for me. I do wait until after our first frost or the temps have cooled so much I don't usually get new growth.

@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse That’s not an issue. We frequently have a killing freeze in early September.
