  • Finally, a sci fi movie with totally different atmosphere; I really loved how The Abyss showed off the horrors of being stuck under water. Remember, submarines are a big no no!

Her heart wasn’t beating, she wasn’t breathing. She was clinically dead. By the time she reached the operating room at the hospital, it had been more than 2.5 hours since she first fell in the ice, and her temperature was still an unprecedented 13.7 degrees Celsius (56.7 Fahrenheit).

It might not be very popular, but I think it's up there on the comedy meter. I noticed that you both have clear drink cups today, I don't think either of you took many sips. You're the squiggly eyebrow guys, in my mind, when looking for something to watch. So glad to have found you, I lost my last favorite show when they broke up, it just wasn't as much fun watching one person.

This is a great example of how CGI should be used to enhance a movie! In today's world the movies depend on CGI and the story tends to suffer. This story was well written, great character development and great acting from all involved.

I will subscribe if you watch the sci-fi TV series called "The Expanse." It started out on the Sci-fi Channel for 3 seasons, but Sci-fi could not afford to keep it going, and the fans pushed to have Amazon continue it, and Amazon did. The Expanse is now filming their 6th season (possible final season). The story is so well told, even people not really into sci-fi like it. The Expanse shows what life would be like if humans colonized Mars, and were living in, and mining the asteroid belt. Like "The Abyss", it's more about humans being their own worst enemy. I think you would like it.

With Terminator 1 and 2, Aliens and The Abyss James Cameron was an absolute revolutionary director of the 80's and 90's. Also, the lead actor here was Ed Harris, he is a phenomenal actor, he was in a lot of great movies in the past couple of decades. It's fun seeing you guys just now discovering movies and actors who many of us have known for a long time (probably bc we're older) :)

This is one of the few movies from way back where the visual effects still hold up, considering they had to invent a lot of processes and technology to achieve it. I think a lot of the movies where real risks were taken, especially by Cameron, really stand out. Titanic is another great example of that. Even though a lot of actors had bad things to say about working with him there's no doubt the fact that he's such a demanding perfectionist has payed off in the finished art.

You are talking about how great the CGI was "...for 1989". This was the first movie to utilize computer graphics on this scale. And it's what allowed Cameron to make his next movie, "Terminator 2" in '91. After that every special effects house in Hollywood was booked up making "Jurassic Park" for Spielberg for summer '93. Now entire movies are made without sets, just green screen and computer generated environments. Wait... you don't know Ed Harris? Oh, dear....

GUYS! I hate to tell you this, but you HAVE to watch this film again.
James Cameron films all.have a Director's Cut (originally released on laserdisk) with his full intended film on it.
In the case of The Abyss, its 30+ Minutes Longer. And you get to see the REAL alien plot.
    It Changes Everything.
In the future, if you're watching a Cameron film, make certain.its the Director's Cut.
Aliens Also has an additional 45 minutes, which has a whole cast of characters cut from the theatrical.

The two water tanks used in the filming of The Abyss were specially constructed to hold large amounts of water. The first tank, based on the abandoned plant's primary reactor containment vessel, held 7.5 million US gallons of water and was 18 m deep and 70 m across. At the time, it was the largest fresh-water-filtered tank in the world. Additional scenes were shot in the second tank, an unused turbine pit, which held 2.5 million US gallons of water. As the production crew rushed to finish painting the main tank, millions of gallons of water poured in and took five days to fill. The Deepcore rig was anchored to a 90-ton concrete column at the bottom of the large tank

Some will argue the older German version, Das Boot, is better, but personally, I don't like to read sub-titles. U-571 is a must to show off home theater sound systems with it's huge stage and DTS surround sound that puts you right in the middle of everything.

The movie was only big in the technical departments back in '89. It largely failed at the box office compared to ALIENS. It's one of the reasons Cameron went back to The Terminator immediately afterwards (which was a very good idea, BTW). But one of the reasons it failed was the studio cutting roughly 29 minutes out and ruining the overall momentum of the film. Unfortunately Cameron has said he won't get back to dealing with the remaster of this film until he's done with the AVATAR movies, so it will be a while.

James Cameron is kinda known for (in some ways) single-handedly progressing special effects in movies. He did it with Terminator, then this movie, then Terminator 2, then Titanic, then Avatar. This movie WAS big when it came out, and it WAS billed as a pseudo-thriller/horror film, but it wasn't. Thanks for a great reaction and post-commentary, fellas. Got me a little emotional with this film all over again. Keep it up!

Another James Cameron movie in which "the Company" and it's representatives(U.S. Navy SEALs) are the real villains, and the aliens(like in Avatar) are the good guys. In Alien and it's sequel Aliens, it was the Company willing to sacrifice any number of people to obtain a live alien specimen. Even in Titanic, it was the ship company that didn't put enough lifeboats onboard, and ordered the Captain to go dangerously at full speed at night to set a record.
