    i love this series so much so i was kinda disappointed that the ending was so unsatisfying, like even if mr queen had to go back to his body, i feel like it’s really unfair that the real queen was able to be the one that received the fruits of his labor whilst mr queen wasn’t even able to say goodbye to the people he had formed strong connections with

      For me the ending made sense.... He came to the past suddenly and unexpectedly.... And he went back to the future suddenly... But while it lasted, their destinies changed... Both for the king and Bong hwan... They both learnt from each other... So it's a fair ending... The real queen loved the king and was equally badass as bong hwan... So it's not as if the king won't love her... And bong hwan cannot lose his real identity just coz he started liking the king... So it makes sense from all perspectives...

    Bong Hwan: "if you keep trying to change your life, the world will get changed someday. Just like Chejiong and I did." His words broke me into tears. The ending was so sad when the two people who fell deeply in love with each other, spent life and death moments together, eventually still can't be together. They were separated in the most painful moment, especially for The Queen, not So Yong. I don't need the right ending. I would prefer a happy ending because Bong Hwan doesn't want to come back either. He was taken back out of his will. So so sad.

      Well eventually so yong was along with Bong Hwan in every moment. Even tho we didn't see clearly,but she was there. It was So Yong who fall in love with the King,not Bond Hwan. The emotions were So Yong's but those ideas from future and fighting skills were Bong Hwan's. So I can't say it was a particularly sad ending. But it was sad for a reason. I wish Bong Hwan could've said his last goodbye to king and court lady and Hong yeon.

      honestly, I would have almost forgiven this ending if it ENDED with him saying these words. when he said "Just like Cheoljong and I did" and at least ACKNOWLEDGED the deep connection between them, and that it WAS them, not so yong, it at least felt like a bit of a closure. but then to show us So Yong, who was originally nothing like him, and is not the person everyone around her fell in love with, living the life he built for her... to see all the people around her still look at her like that person when she is NOT, was so dissatisfying. its not the character whose story I followed and cared to see a happy ending of. it was weird to see her even keeping the same relationship with the king when he DESPISED her before Bong-Hwan

  • @julianasol3258
    @julianasol3258 3 ปีที่แล้ว +259

    I decided to think ( in order to get over the somewhat disappointing ending) that So Yong was just Bong Hwan...like the same soul, but without having lived all the lives till the present time. It would also explain how SY's body accepted BH's soul - cause it was the same soul,but "upgraded". I'd like to believe that everything SY lived through with the king after BH left her body is hidden in BH's memory. The conscious mind doesn't remember past lives, only the subconsious, so everything is there, hidden in our chef's mind. Also, I believe that every soul, no matter how many lives it lives, has a core personality, an essence that stays the same while it accumulates other layers. SY and BH have the same essence, but in SY's case, she needed the future self, BH, to awaken this core personality...It wasn't that BH fell in love with the king, he just remembered all the love he had already experienced and felt from his past life. I think that's why he feels so daunted by his own actions sometimes. His soul remembers, but his present self doesn't....It's the only thing that makes sense to me. BH couldn't have stayed in the past cause he was still bound to his present body and cause the past belonged to his past self which is So Young....at least, that's what I'd like to believe.

    • @dostagirl9551

      Many people share this theory. I think it's what the writers intended...just handled poorly.

    • @vrinkee
      @vrinkee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, that's originally what I thought had happened, before I saw this scene..... Like the big question was always why was it BH's soul in particular that traveled back in time if not for this reason??? Honestly would've been better if they'd really made it that way, but I guess it actually could be that way but they just don't make it obvious at the very least. **sigh**

    • @Anna-mr9tv
      @Anna-mr9tv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I had this same theory and i'm rewatching Mr Queen to figure out what I missed and honestly, I don't think the ending is as disappointing as people are making it out to be because BH got his closure by reading the history books and he found out that his actions did make a change in the past. The writers could've expanded on this though because it was the main plot, until it slowly became the side plot.

    The thing is, I could totally forgive how they ended it because the series as a whole was just totally amazing.
    It could've made a difference in the end by giving us closure. I kind of like expected Bong Hwan to meet people like the king or Kim byeong in or the people he knew in the past in general.....in the present. I thought he'd see somebody of similar face or something like that, and it would show him going after them or something. That would've given Bong Hwan and the audience, a type of closure.....
    Other than the ending, I gotta say that I loved this series so much!

    The ending ruined this show for me. Mr Queen was the driving force behind this drama yet when he left so suddenly, no one even noticed. Not a single person he loved registered that this brash, opinionated, and vibrant personality switched to one that was unrecognizable - and I don’t count a slight hiking of the skirt and a bit of cussing in a side room to be enough for them to think that SY was just the “upgraded” model. As for SY, because the writers gave her no interaction in the drama nor any self-made accomplishments, she was made into a villain of sorts in my eyes. Reminds me of the story of the little mermaid - not the Disney version with its happy ending but the original one in which the prince marries another, never recognizing the person who actually saved him. SY hid from her life while someone else cleaned it up for her and gave her everything she ever wanted and was never able to achieve for herself. The true crushing blow was that even CJ never really noticed. I wonder if HWJ and BI’s stories both served as a parallel to this moment. HWJ’s deception leading the king to state that not pursuing a truth that no one wants might be for the best. BI for his introspective moment at death as to why, when he knew SY the best, he still couldn’t see the change. It could help explain CJ’s obliviousness - that it was something he willed himself in order to maintain his happiness. Why else would a man whose intelligence brought down the most powerful family in his nation fail to realize his wife (the one who was an indispensable and active partner in helping achieve his dream) was a different woman?

      i agree with a lot but from the moment Mr queen got SY's memories he wanted to help her. in the extra episodes, you see that the king did fall in love with SY at first sight but because of the clan he disregarded her, I completely agree that the reason he fell back in love was because of Mr queen and I won't forgive the writers for not giving them a goodbye scene but at the end of the day he went back as sudden and unexpected as he got there.

      @@KingOfThePirates101 we can fall out of love. But what the King and Chef had was not just love, but a lot of respect for each other's intellect and uniqueness, trust, camaraderie and a very sweet friendship. The King did not have these things with anyone else, but people are failing to see that.
      That's why I strictly maintain the fact that the person who the King always stayed in love with was the chef. And the chef loved him back... this man who always played around actually learned about caring for someone so deeply that he didn't want to go back in his own time and instead wanted to hold the King for just a second more.. that desperation is born from love.

      @@dandywelosky1023 As I've come to believe that JBH is KSY's reincarnation, I agree that CJ/SY had an initial connection and believe that SB's attraction to CJ was bc his soul has always loved CJ, but you're right...CJ fell in love bc of Mr. Queen, and the writers did an injustice to viewers who followed them on their journey of acceptance and love. Plus the plot inconsistencies drove me nuts. CJ freaks out that Mr. Queen tries to be a perfect queen but is just mildly curious when she reverts back to a very demure type who addresses him as Your Majesty instead of calling him by his name. Then Choi and HY just accept that they went from being considered family to servants again, no questions asked. SY seems to remember some, if not all, that transpired but she can't possibly remember everything from BH because she's still excited about the baby. Had she still had access to his memories, she'd know that her baby dies in under a year and CJ dies 12 years later. BH's mother was a history professor, so his knowledge of the past and of CJ was pretty extensive; the show kept his natural lifetime the same - CJ's death was both in the book BH looks at as well as mentioned in episode 1, and since the ruler after him was still GoJong, the baby would have passed the same as historical accounts as well. Then they expect us to believe that BH is just perfectly fine returning to his time with his dragon. I realize his dragon made him happy but come on! He lost his first love/soul mate. He lost his friends (something he didn't have in modern times). He lost his baby - and it was his as much as SY's...yet he expresses nothing but a trite idiom about justice prevailing? Maybe they were afraid that would make it too "gay," but in glossing it over, it made it too unbelievable and unsatisfactory. Agree with you 100% that he should have been allowed to say goodbye and have the audience feel his loss and move on with him. Perhaps have him acknowledge that this was SY's lifetime, and that a part of him would always be with CJ. That would have given viewers so much closure. My ultimate wish would have been for him to stay. He was happier in the past. They should have gone with a fictional king without a death sentence hanging over his head, ixnayed SY from the start, and just gave us the happy ending many of us thought they were going for. The only thing BH had going for him in his own lifetime was his mother, and a time capsule and some narrative letters would have assured her that her child lived a full and happy life. Or, barring that, have BH meet CJ's reincarnated soul. That could have so easily been the final episode in the spinoff. We wouldn't need to see the entire romance play out...just have them meet and recognize each other. The end. So frustrating.

    I just finished this last night. The fact they just totally gloss over the fact he fell in love with the king is a little annoying? Playing it off that it was "her" that fell in love with him when it was him in her body is dumb. And as others have pointed out, the king fell in love with him too. I mean it was the queen's face, but his soul. She was around for a good portion of that at the end, but still. He was running the show when he was in her body.
    It makes me wonder if he was given the choice, if he'd stay with the man he loved or return to his time? Both would be bittersweet, but if he stayed, at least he'd be with him.
    I would love to see like an epilogue episode where he meets a descendent of the king that looks like him, in the way he met that director's ancestor back then. It would be interesting to see how that story goes.

    I was disappointed with the ending but i have to say that i can see why they went with it. The writers had two options:
    1. The chef stays in the queen's body and lives happily with the king, but that would mean that the queen will never be able to 100% control her own body, and the chef's actual body in the present dies.
    2. He goes back to his actual body (which is the ending). That means the queen gets her body back and would have a loving husband. No one dies, everyone is in the right body.
    Both options have their pros and cons and i don't think they could've ended the story in way that makes everyone happy. I would've been disappointed either way honestly.

    After watching this series recently and seeing all the retrospectives on the ending I can agree with the end of this series being so underwhelming.
    Besides the lack of closure between Jang Bong Hwan and the characters he came to care for, his return didn't feel like a meaningful change and therefore did not have a character arc.
    If the series started off with him treating all his subordinates with distain, only to realize that in the final episodes that they were the ones that lifted him up to help save the king and then when he came back to the present he could have shown growth by actually lifting up those around him that supported him the most - instead we get, "he's a whistleblower".
    Jang Bong Hwan realizing his own sexuality for being a womanizer at the start would have been super progressive as he realizes what his true sexuality is, but might be a little much for the more conservative viewers.
    Or I guess a really interesting idea is that if both Jang Bong Hwan and Kim So Yong were both inhabiting the same body at the same time that her qualities that made her a good person would meaningfully have rubbed off on him, however we don't spend enough time with Kim So Yong's past to really get a full picture of who she.
    It feels like the time travel aspect was sort of added on as how to get a gender swap at the start but they did not really figure a way to pay that off for the end of the series.
    Great series overall, but I think the part that makes me think about the series the most is how half-baked the ending felt after a mostly solid series.

    • @OneWayTraffic
      @OneWayTraffic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Go back and watch again. It's open to interpretation and they show more than they tell, but she's there. If the body is the car, then he's in the drivers seat but she's the GPS, not just the passenger. Aside from the inner monologue changes, the memories and skills returning, the emotions emerging almost against BH's will, the changed pronouns where he talks about KSY as 'me' 'I' "my dream died that day.' "I threw myself away.' Earlier he spoke of her as 'this woman'.
      Also the merged personality is him on the surface in terms of speech and actions because it's funnier, but her underneath. It's pretty clear that he's losing his identity in her.
      There's also some music cues that non Korean speakers might miss. Listen to 'Here I am'' on the OST and read the translated lyrics. It's a pretty clear message what's going on when that song plays.

      Prop issue. They had to rush the filming of the ending due to a Covid infection delaying filming. As far as I'm concerned it was a percussion cap paper cartridge. They knew most would not see the difference, and were under significant time pressure to get it wrapped. It was originally all supposed to be pre produced, but pandemics gonna pandemic.

      Yes, and surprisingly I found out that one of the earliest bulletproof vests also existed (though just a little bit past the events of the story). One of the earliest ones discovered was actually a Korean one and was displayed in a museum. It used several layers of cotton, which some might discredit at stopping bullets, but you have to remember that bullets back then didn't have the speed and impact of modern firearms.

      Lots of people. It was a prop issue and they were under a lot of time pressure to get it wrapped due to filming delays. The main leads also had modern boots for the outdoors scenes. That I understand, as if they sprain an ankle while filming, then you have no drama.
