McCafé® Shamrock Shake - Want cool and minty? You’re in luck. Smooth and creamy mint flavored shake topped with whipped topping and a cherry. But only for a limited time. Available in Small, Medium, and Large. (From the McDonald's Website)
Instead of just bringing back the mint-flavored Shamrock Shake, a seasonal favorite that returns to menus around St. Patrick's Day, McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) has been testing multiple variants of the treat this year, including some hot ones. The fast-food chain, which has been pushing its beverage and coffee lines as a way to improve flagging sales in the United States has rolled out five Shamrock varieties in select markets including Southern California and Chicago.
These include the original Shamrock Shake, which blends vanilla soft serve and mint-flavored syrup with an added twist for 2017 of a sprinkle of green sugar crystals to go along with the traditional whipped topping and maraschino cherry. New for 2017, at least in some locations, are a chocolate version of the treat that includes both chocolate shake and Shamrock shake, a chocolate chip frappe variant that includes mocha and caramel, a hot chocolate with Shamrock Shake syrup, and a hot Shamrock mocha, the Orange County Register reported. These products have been spotted in other markets as well and the company did not immediately respond to a request from The Motley Fool to confirm whether there are plans for a national launch.
The company does not list the seasonal items under the Desserts & Shakes section of its website nor did they appear in the McCafe section as of the afternoon of Feb. 9. St. Patrick's Day takes place March 17, which leaves the company time for a wider launch.

Why is this a smart play?
In recent years, McDonad's rivals including Yum! Brands' (NYSE: YUM) Taco Bell, and Restaurant Brands International's (NYSE: QSR) Burger King have gotten a lot of attention for product innovation. Some of these ideas have been ridiculous, like Taco Bell's Naked Chicken Chalupa, which has a fried chicken shell, or Burger King's various Cheetos tie-ins, but these efforts have brought the fast-food chains traffic and sales.
McDonald's has been largely devoid of new products, instead focusing on promoting and expanding its all-day breakfast efforts. That promotion has been a success, but interest in it seems to have topped out and the company has been looking to innovate to punch up U.S. sales.
In recent months, this has included a major promotion around launching two new sizes of the iconic Big Mac sandwich. And while the larger "Grand Mac," and smaller "Mac Jr." are not overly innovative ideas, they offer a fresh spin on a well-known product.
The new variations on the Shamrock Shake do the same thing. They take an anticipated seasonal product and expand the brand. That should lead devoted fans of the minty drink to try the new variations and should also translate into more visits (where you have to assume many people buy more than shakes).

You are absolutely correct ! The Shamrock Shake was substantially better years ago. It used to be a product worth waiting all year for. I had one this past year, and it was so disappointing I won't be wasting any more time or money at McDonalds.

I agree with you 100% on this one. I just went and tried the Shamrock shake after seeing your video and don't like what they have done to it. They made the peppermint flavor too strong and it ruins the taste. It was better in the past.

I completely agree with this review. I had the same reaction. The problem is they are using some sweetener derivative or something not only in their shamrock but in all their shakes as well.

McDonalds manager here. I think the problems you described might be related to the individual location you have been served at. At my store, the shamrock shake has that perfect triple-thick shake consistency and has a proper flavor.
Now to address why it is so hyped this year, McDonalds released different types of shamrock flavors. Of course, the fame Shamrock Shake, and in addition, the Chocolate Shamrock Shake (popular combination made official). Of the new flavors, there is the Chocolate Chip Shamrock Frappe, which I have tried, pretty good. Review that next. And there is the Shamrock Hot Chocolate and Shamrock Mocha, both of which I have not tried.
I think the price is very fair considering how much the distribution center sells the syrup for.

I am so glad you noticed the difference in quality this year! I love Shamrock Shakes and look forward to them every year, but I found that this it tasted very cheap, like toothpaste.

You HAVE to go to an Arby's and order a "Meat Mountain". It's a secret menu item that's just a sandwich made up of every meat they have plus two types of cheese. Look it up, It is quite the experience.

Some places put too much mint syrup in it, that is all. I drink a ton of these and there are only a select few McDonalds' that I get them from because the others load on the mint syrup, causing what you complain about

McDonalds has the worst shakes in fast food.
It didn't used to be that way. They used to be very average. They were kinda thick and not very authentic, but they tasted good. They were very cheap tasting, but still tasted good. Ya know how if chocolate doesn't have enough cocoa they have to call it "chocolate candy"? Well, "chocolate candy" products can still be a good guilty pleasure, and that's how McDonalds shakes used to be.
But then they decided to go with the whole "McCafe" gimmick and they completed changed the formula. Now they have the texture more like a real ice cream milkshake (albeit a thin one), but they have that awful synthetic, chemically aftertaste that Reviewbrah pointed out. And that horrible aftertaste isn't unique to the Shamrock Shake; their chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla all have it too.
yes I have not liked it for a few years now. It has a perfume taste and I could only tolerate it last year when they added chocolate to it. It used to be great!
Best shakes now at Chick-fil-a. I worked at MD's '78-'81, the mint shake was really great back then - their very best.

I totally agree. Back in the day I remember loving the Shamrock shake. Nowadays I wouldn't even think of getting one, or any of McDonalds' shakes for that matter. They've gone to shit.
Dearest reviewbrah of the week, had the exact same experience in Mcdonald's Canada last March when this watered down nuclear powder came here for a St Paddy's run. I think the flavor has even changed from last year to this year! This year's is very intensely sweet. Less mint and more sugar. But that shamrock chocolate chip frappe is pretty damn good and I don't even like coffee.

The last time I had a Shamrock Shake, it seemed to have some citrus flavor added. It was definitely different from when I was a lad, but I still thought it was pretty good.
