The stages of Prophase I, in order:
    Leptotene
    Zygotene
    Pachytene
    Diplotene
    Diakinesis
    Prophase I Stages in Detail:
    1. Leptotene:
    Key feature: Chromosome condensation begins.
Appearance: Chromosomes become visible as thin, thread-like structures called chromatin threads.
Events: DNA replication (if not already occurred) and initiation of chromosome condensation.
    Nucleus: Intact with prominent nucleolus.
    2. Zygotene:
Key feature: Homologous chromosomes pair up (synapsis).
Appearance: Chromosomes appear closely associated in pairs.
Events: Homologous chromosomes recognize and pair based on matching gene sequences. The synaptonemal complex begins to form between them.
    Nucleus: Intact with nucleolus.
    3. Pachytene:
    Key feature: Crossing over occurs.
Appearance: Synaptonemal complex complete, chromosomes fully paired and thickened.
Events: Homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material through a process called crossing over, creating new combinations of genes.
    Nucleus: Intact with nucleolus.
    4. Diplotene:
Key feature: Synaptonemal complex disassembles, chromosomes partially separate except at chiasmata.
Appearance: Homologous chromosomes begin to separate, but remain connected at chiasmata (X-shaped structures) where crossing over occurred.
Events: Synaptonemal complex breaks down, chiasmata become visible.
    Nucleus: Intact with nucleolus.
    5. Diakinesis:
Key feature: Chromosomes condense further, spindle fibers form.
Appearance: Chromosomes fully condensed and distinct, chiasmata terminalized (moved to chromosome ends).
Events: Nuclear envelope and nucleolus break down, spindle fibers attach to kinetochores on chromosomes.
Nucleus: Breakdown of nuclear envelope and nucleolus, spindle fibers visible.
