I've been natural for more than 14 years now, I have dreadlocks, in my teen years I use to relax my hair and my skin is so sensitive I would get sores and end up cutting my hair. To be honest, I love your hair, it's thick and healthy.

Oh my soul that’s so hectic… I think relaxers and hairdresser techniques have come a long way so it’s possible to do it safely and have healthy relaxed hair. Thank you for stopping by ♥️

Hi. Love your videos. I’m a fairly new natural (2 years in) so my relaxed hair is not that far in my past. I had some of the same issues with my relaxed hair as you do, so here are some suggestions….
    Disclaimer I’m not a hair expert, I’m
just a girl who paid very close attention to my relaxed hair and cared for it very well for many years.
    1. The dry scalp is normal for a lot of people, myself included. The dryness is your scalp’s way of telling you it’s time to wash your hair. I used Design Essentials Peppermint and Aloe scalp tonic to help with the dry scalp. It’s not a cure or fix, it will just give you a day or two extra before you need to wash your hair. It is very soothing and light weight but also effective.
    2. The shedding: Your hair is not shedding more, the straight hairs don’t get tangled or intertwined with any other hair so they can just fall out easier.
    3. When I was relaxed and during the early part of my natural hair, I used KeraCare anti-itch shampoo. That shampoo was very effective against dry scalp.
    4. Heat - you can air dry your relaxed hair, but you will still need to follow it up with a flat iron to get the sleek look. Or sit under a hooded dryer for 20-30 minutes to dry out the excess water, then follow it up with your blow dryer and flat iron. Doing this cuts
down on the amount it time you expose your hair to direct heat by the blow drier. Or try wrapping your wet hair with a mousse and sitting under the dryer, then flat iron as needed(this is the best way to avoid heat damage).
In general, Design Essentials brand is an excellent brand. It is black owned and they have a ton of products formulated for natural and relaxed hair.

I’ve just relaxed my hair as well, I’m at the 5 week mark and almost 6 and wow… the growth is already killing me 🤣. Also I’m glad I’m not the only one who has been experiencing some shedding. I was really stressing that maybe my hair could be falling off

😂😂😂😂😂 I think I stretched it out to 12 weeks… I won’t be doing that again! Well not anytime soon at least 💆🏾‍♀️ lol yeah I guess it’s normal especially now that our hair texture has changed.

I’m so glad you spoke about the dry scalp thing!! I was just saying to my mom a few days ago my scalp has dandruff which is something I’ve never suffered from ever. I thought it was a product that I had tried out that did that but I’m glad to hear someone else talk about it. I just bought some grape seed oil cause my natural hair used to love that so I’m gonna see if that works for me this wash day. When I was first relaxed I was also so horrified with how my hair was just falling 😭😭 I was like MAMA YOOOOO!! The natural girlies were right, I’m not gonna have hair on my head. But after my first touch up I recognised that the issue was moisture. I incorporated a lot more moisture into my routine and I haven’t had that excessive shedding/breakage problem. I also don’t like the “weighed down” look so I tend to moisturise my hair every 3/4 days after wash day. I also use a leave in conditioner in between those days, I spritz the crème of nature one and then moisturise with dark & lovely anti breakage moisturiser. I use that sparingly and just evenly distribute it over my hair. I also use a lot of strengthening products on my wash days to help with that problem. I use the Redken acid bonding shampoo/conditioner, then I go in with dark&lovely deep conditioner, then I use the Miele rosemary mint conditioner, maybe to a tea rinse and then add a leave in. When I blow dry my hair I use a heat protectant on low heat. But I only blow dry on 50-70% air dried hair. Then use a paddle brush with a blow dryer. I stretch my relaxers for 12 weeks, and when I wash my hair I use a hot comb for my roots! I got that tip from another relaxed TH-camr

I too have dry scalp situation... but I'm combatting it with some apple cider vinegar mixed in water straight to the hair, hair spray situation. It really works... even overnight. I guess you can do apple cider rinses after your shampoo.. before condition (for smell purposes). I add a bit of lemongrass oil in the mixture.

Hi …I love your shade of lipstick and the color of your sweater. Regarding heat , I’ve been relaxed for years and I barely use heat …. If I want a straight look I go to bed with my hair wrapped or in a flat style and if I’m looking for curls or waves, I do braid outs or curl my hair at night and loosen it a couple hours before I go out to stretch the curl…. Even when I wash my hair I immediately put it in a ponytail and tie it with a scarf to flatten the roots and let it dry for hours, after, if , I use heat it’s to dry the small portion of hair where the ponytail was placed which tends to be a little damp. These things work for me I hope I was helpful.

It could be dermatitis. Your scalp can get dandruff-like patches/scales. It itches and doesn’t easily go away with washing. I always thought it dry scalp so slathered on the stuff you mentioned but learned that was the opposite of what you should do. A dermatologist can determine for sure, but there are otc shampoos like Nizoral that can help. If you use conditioner don’t get it on your scalp. I use the prescription version. The other things I use for my scalp are also prescription, scalp oils. I thought going natural would help but since I’ve learned what I have and how to treat it I’ve been considering going back relaxed. Love your videos. ❤

My hair has been natural for over a decade and I too suffer from the flaky “dandruff” when I have my hair straightened. My scalp doesn’t react the same when I use my natural hair products and wear my hair as-is. But when my hair is essentially dry and straight.. girl!! Itching for days! The dryness and itchiness may not have anything to do with your relaxer. 🤷🏾‍♀️

7:19 try looking into a Revair dryer. i got it for my thigh length curly hair and its a game changer. i have since cut my hair short but still use it. i can do my hair just little over an hour now (if im being picky) and it's less damage and pulling than blow dryer and brush method. yes it is expensive and bulky but totally worth it.

I learned a long time ago when I was relaxed that my hair and scalp did best if I washed my hair every 3-4 days. It's almost like my scalp produces a lot of sebum that has nowhere to go, and it's best to shampoo regularly rather than to slather products on it and not wash for weeks. This also works for my natural hair as well. I also can't wear wigs, weave, braid my hair, etc. I literally just wash n go every few days, just went from relaxed to natural years ago and still kept it simple. I just do not have the time to spend hours playing in my hair.

I’m feeling some of those struggles 🥲 for the dry scalp try jojoba oil,I’ve heard and read it’s closest to our natural sebum production. I’ve moved away from looking for products specifically for “black hair” or “relaxed hair and just buy products based on my hair needs e.g moisture, protein, frizz free, etc.

Do you use a leave in conditioner or heat protectant cream before blowdrying your hair? If so, then all you probably need to lock in moisture and be emollient without weighing down your hair is either sweet almond oil or jojoba oil, brushed through each day. You also need the right brush for your hair texture and style you're wearing, so that it distributes oil from your scalp without roughing up the strands of your hair. Look at some of the Denman brushes or if you've got the money, Mason Pearson brushes or one of the German/Italian knock offs.

The caffeine in the tea is supposed to stimulate growth, in addition to reducing shedding. I this is done after a wash, sit on your scalp for 20-45 mins, followed by a really good deep condition. I have the same problem at times, so I'm going to try it.

My hair has been relaxed for 23 out of the 26 years of my life. My beautician called me “Pocahontas,” because my hair was always fall two or three inches below my bra line. However, your hair will very likely, gradually, become more and more porous, damaged, and possibly thin out over time. And, you will likely hit a wall in hair length retention, because your ends will be so damaged, (no matter how well you take care of your hair - root to end), that come time for your next relaxer, any length you obtained in “new-growth,” will likely be the same amount of length cut off of your ends, because of all of the splits that have occurred, due to porosity and brittleness caused by the relaxer, that will eventually travel up your hair shaft, and cause more damage. The chemicals in relaxers truly strip the hair cuticles. There are videos showing what pure lye does to an aluminum can. Relaxing your natural hair pretty much causes the same amount of damage as repeatedly bleaching your hair. It becomes dryer and brittle. I’m going natural, truly, for the first time in my life, and my natural hair feels soooo much healthier than my relaxed hair EVER could have. Relaxing caused so many chemical burns, hair loss associated with chemical burns, and permanent thinning. I would advise anyone who hasn’t relaxed their hair yet to truly think of other less permanent “lower maintenance” options for hair health, and length retention.
    Edit:
I very rarely got chemical burns from the beautician I switched over to when I was younger. However, scalp irritations from flare-ups caused by common skin conditions also made my skin more sensitive. And before I switched over to the beautician I that I still go to, till this day, I got such a bad chemical burn under the care of my first ever beautician, that 60% of my scalp was covered in massive oozing scabs from chemical burns - thank GOD I was younger, and my scalp healed, and my mom was able to find someone who truly new how to care for hair, apply chemical relaxers and properly process natural hair. And I have always followed the basic rules: wait AT LEAST 4 days before getting your hair relaxed if you scratch/bump/irritate your scalp in anyway, or until your scalp has fully healed; DO NOT wash your hair a week prior to getting your hair relaxed, and throughly apply a good coating of a petroleum based product to your scalp to protect your skin from the chemicals in the relaxer that will burn it - remember the active ingredient’s sole purpose is to breakdown molecular structures.

Hi Tshego, Love your hair, maybe try oiling your scalp with coconut or Jojoba oil to aid with our dry scalp, these are both light oils and won't weigh the hair down, I use these.. Also for the heat, you can try wrapping your hair at night to maintain your straight hair, I also love doing rollersets and only flat iron my roots then I wrap my hair to get the straight look.

Hey Cee J! Thank you… I like these ideas I’m sure someone will find this helpful 😊 the oil my hair and scalp seem to enjoy now is Argan oil. Coconut oil goes rancid in my hair so I always have to wash it out after applying. I’ve used jojoba before when I was natural and didn’t really enjoy it. I preferred JBCO and Avocado oil. I wanna get into rollersets actually. Those seem and look quite elegant 😊
