Where is the sarang in raga gaud sarang - is a question which many cannot answer. To understand Gaud sarang, one must first understand raga Gaud. Hence this comment
According to Pt. Manikbua Thakurdas whose profound & extensive research is well known, Raga Gaud Sarang is a jod raga : a combination of raga Gaud & raga shudh sarang.
Raga Gaud is an independent raga. Not many know of its existence ! Raga Gaud is a sampurna raga but has a vakra chalan. Its madhyam is komal & all the other swaras are teevra. Please see description of raga Gaud in the link below.
The sarang component in Gaud sarang is shown when you take two madhyams like in shudh sarang - ma ( teevra ) pa ma (komal). So in gaud sarang it is thus :
ga re ma ga pa, ma pa ma ga, ga re ma ga pa re sa. Now the Gaud sarang is complete.
Also one more point - the pa re sangati is also a mark of sarang whereas in Gaud it is simply ga re ma ga, ga re sa.
The vadi samvadi swaras in Gaud Sarang are ga & ni respectively
