  • Firewire Machadocado review as a Twin fin set, super fun!
    I surfed the Firewire surfboards Machadocado yesterday as a twin fin set-up: Deflow keel fins. The surf was tiny, but the Cado had so much speed and drive, effortlessly transitioning from rail to rail! I am falling in love with this surfboard and its versatility.

    nice flash review, I really like that you tried it as a pure Twin. I tried the one I have with larger fins but mistakenly used a trailer too, and it was dragging. visibly dragging. Thanks for the inspiration, I will try it this weekend. :) Cheers

      Thanks 🙏, yeah, give it a go. Some find that it lights the board up for them.
      I was listening to a Tomo interview, and he talked about how a deep concave through the tail sits the board down in the water and acts like a back fin. He was talking about the Revo ( it has a different bottom shape, V and concaves), but the Cado has a deep double Concave running through it; it's the same principle, and if you stick a big trailer in the back, it may make the board stiff.
      I know how double concaves work, and they squirt speed. I shaped 200 boards and also glassed and sanded them back in the '90s and early 2000s, with no shaping machine and a lot of dust😂
      ( I made a lot of fish/small wave boards for myself) but I honestly can't get any speed on this board, and I'm not sure why😂😅
      I wonder if that is making the board slow. (maybe it would have been better as quad)
      I looked at my footage, and the board 5’6 is too big for me. A 5’2 would be the size, but it doesnt have enough volume.
      If you have the Machado 2+1, maybe try a small Trailer fin. That was my next option.
      The Machdo 2+1 without a back fin is the best fun I have had on it.
      I bought the Machado Keels. It just feels slow for me!
      Good luck at the weekend😀🤙

    Your reviews are great! Good surfer. Honest, Informative and relatable. I was waiting for this board but then a mint and good price used 5'5 Too Fish came up. Thing is great! But this Cado looks like the money too. It looks more immediate and user friendly than the Too Fish. The outline reminds me a lot of my old Superbrand Fling with that wide tail. Just WAY more durable!

      Thanks, Craig 🙏 I would also like to have the Too Fish and the Seaside, too. 😂
      I like Rob's boards because I want to go fast without too much effort, and he also focuses on good paddlers. I nearly bought the Too when they didnt have the Mashup I wanted.
      The Superbrand Fling passed me by, I had a look and the plan shape is very similar eh.
      The Cado is really thinned out through the tail. I find the Cado and the Masup a little unpredictable at times; I think it's probably the deep concaves. But the concaves are helping with the squirts of speed you get through turns and down the line. You're right. The Cado can be suitable for intermediate surfers if they go for a larger model. It feels like an intermediate board under your arm.

    Just saw an interview with Rob and it sounds like he actually developed the board as a twin using his Keels and only last minute added the 2+1. I’m assuming as a marketing opportunity for those fins. Anyway, I went ahead and grabbed a set of his keels to test out. Haven’t tried them yet, but visually the area of those fins and the way they’re placed on the board when installed looks like an ideal complement to the tail shape and width. Will update if I get them out there soon.

      Yes, the keels loosen up the board. Would love to know how Robs keels work with the board before I spend any more money 😂👍
      I think that for me, the only way I'm really going to have fun with it is to surf it as a twin fin.
      I saw a new video with Kevin Schulz comparing the Too Fish with the Cado, and he was catching rails on the Cado ( 2+1 set-up). Granted, the waves were really hard to ride with a lot of backwash. He does one great layback! But the Too Fish is looking much more fluid🤙

      @@surfingtipsandtricks watching Schulz on a tiny 5’2 just further reinforces in my mind that I should’ve gotten the 5’6” instead of the 5’8”. With the width in that tail and the bottom contours I think the lift created would warrant running a bit lower volume than expected. I went up in volume with the 5’8” compared to my regular shortboard think “It’s a groveler, a little volume won’t hurt”. But I can’t help myself from wanting maximum responsiveness. Might get my hands on a 5’6” and compare before deciding which to keep.

    • @surfingtipsandtricks
      @surfingtipsandtricks  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, I think that's true; for me, the 5’6 feels like a bit of a lump of a board and feels slow. Probably, the 5’4 would have been a better option. I still haven't surfed it in ideal waves, but I have surfed it in the sort of waves I surf a lot. It's great that you can change them🤙
      I thought the comparison Kevin Schultz did with the Too Fish (high tide session) I thought he was catching rails on the Cado!

    • @trestlesrocks
      @trestlesrocks 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@surfingtipsandtricks based on the template, the 5’4” looks like the best fit for me, but it’s too thin. The dims going up the range are scaled oddly. 5’4” is an inch wider than the 5’2. 5’6” is barely wider than the 5’4”, but the 5’6” is actually thicker than the 5’8”. Yet the 5’8” is nearly 3/4” wider.
      5’4 if it were 2 1/2-2 5/8 thick would be ideal

    Great review, like the twin fin setup. I have a lost puddle jumper sting, curious about trying it as a twin now very similar outline.
    Roughly what is the distance from the side fin box to the rear of the board?
    Great review breakdown!

      @@surfingtipsandtricks awesome thank you for checking that helps out a lot, I’m going to order the NVS convertible ono twin fin which should help moving the fin a little further back for my board setup.

    I’m 6’1” and 190-195lbs. Normal shortboards hover in the 32-33 liter range. I was torn between the 5’6” and the 5’8” worried that the 5’8” might feel too bulky underfoot. But ordered the 5’8” anyhow seeing as this is more of a groveler for me and a little extra volume is better than too little. Hope I made the right choice.

    • @surfingtipsandtricks
      @surfingtipsandtricks  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I feel the same. The 5’6 does feel a little bulky for me, 5’11, 79kg ( 174lbs).
      The 5’6 Cado paddles better than my 5’8 Mashup, even though it has less volume because of the width of the nose.
      But even if I did have the choice on the day, I probably would still have chosen the 5’6 because I want to catch waves easily.
      The last time I had a board under 30L, also with a wide nose, paddling was hard work.
      It's a trade-off.
      But I am sure you won't regret having the extra foam. The board is so fast and loose anyway.

    • @trestlesrocks

      @@surfingtipsandtricks the 5’6” looks good underfoot for you. I just saw a vid with Jackson Dorian riding the same dims as Rob. But he’s probably 6 inches shorter than Rob and he rode it as a thruster. He was ripping on it and it’s probably the equivalent of the 5’10” for one of us given his size. I think sizing it a tad generously might be the move.

    • @surfingtipsandtricks
      @surfingtipsandtricks  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I have seen that; Jackson is ripping! I didnt notice they were on the same dimensions.I guess they had to be as 5’2 is the smallest model. Foam is you our friend😃🤙

      I thought his waves looked much different on his backhand in that session compared to other clips I had seen. But the waves didnt look super easy to ride backside. He was having to race the sections. The other rights I had seen him ride on the Cado had more of a pocket.
