Tip for Gathering Fabric: Instead of the method you used to gather the fabric, try this: Take waxed dental floss and zig-zag over the floss close to the raw edge of your fabric. Leave about 2 inches on each end to hold onto. Then gather the fabric by pushing it along the floss. It never breaks and you can really push on the fabric. I used to sew lots of dance costumes and found this trick to be flawless. Great video!
If you have a gathering foot that would work to create the ruffle for the shirt or use a zig zag stitch over dental floss. Pull the floss to create the gather.
omg this is the first positive comment about that!! everyone else is like "what are you doing!!? you're gonna break your needles!" haha that's how my grandma taught me and I've never had a problem
Thank you!! You have given me hope and allowed my imagination to grow !! We are talking about a 52 year old mum that loves fashion at a reasonable price !! 😘
A very good tip for best results is to also iron your fabrics before stitching too. It helps you line the pieces up better and you seams look more professional.
My younger brother just passed away from the virus in April. He was 51 and I kept a lot of his clothes. I was just going to make blankets from his t-shirts and button down shirts and now I can try to turn them into fashionable clothes that I can wear.... We will see I guess, but it gives me some ideas. Thank you ❤️💯
That army dress was screaming Shania Twain vibes! My favorite was the sweater with awesome buttons I want to copy that immediately! Thanks for inspriation!!!!
I'm a sewer. One thing one of my mentors taught me was buttons can make or break an outfit. My poor kids hated when I went shopping for buttons ~~ hours to find the "just right" fit"!
I’ve been upcycling and selling my husbands old clothes online by restyling them for my female clients and they’ve been loving them as tee dresses shirt dresses and oversized looks!! Rolling sleeves/ adding lacy bralettes/ pretty belts & the right footwear helps even if you don’t sew ( like me) but just dress up pieces w chunky chains jewelry and cinch the menswear ! Thank you goddess orly for showing us the step by step guide if we do want to try slimming the volume. These are beautiful ideas!!! I’ve also swapped out knobs on dressers and kitchen hardware just like your cardigan idea!! I love all of these so much. Thanks for the happiness 💗⭐️💗⭐️💗⭐️
Hi there. I subscribed today and I emulated your green dress with a XXL shirt I got at a thrift store for a dollar. Thank you - I’m a beginner sewer and this really helped me a lot. Any thrift store alterations video that you can put together would be great - like altering lined blazers, larger dresses, shirts, etc would be awesome
Tips for the shirt. Instead of pulling your seams when you sew, put the longer piece on the bottom and the shorter on top. The excess will resorb almost by itself because of the motion of the feedogs.
What I love most is that I can still recreate your looks without needing a degree from FIT!! I don’t have a machine but not to worry I still can with a needle, thread , dental floss (for crying out loud), new buttons or fabric glue. Your a GENIUS!!
I constantly change out the buttons on a piece that either I’ve thrifted or just want to upgrade the look. It makes such a difference and is the least expensive thing you can do.
You're the best Orly. Everything you touch turn to gold... Words aren't enough to commended you on your craftsmanship. . I just love love your work.. 😘😘👏👏👏
Yeah I bought a blanket throw that thick cream knit and have large ball trimming the edges and use it as an oversize and comfy wrap. Because it was a large rectangle , I did not need to cut anything, just throw it over my shoulders.. I like there was a mixture of very easy DIY and those for ones that are comfortable with a sewing machine. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.
It would be great if you could show the threading and sewing process in a contrast stitch (just for the video, finish with the color you actually use, but just so it is easier to see on camera). Love this video Orly 😘!
@V Rostova this is exactly my past experience when I'm not pulling out the pins. It bends and it breaks the needle. It's kinda scary because you'll hear a noise from the machine. It is not healthy for the machine's life because it will ruin/damage the timing and the position of the needle. It might cause the machine not performing well and it might cause damage in the throat plate. When the throat plate is damaged because of scratches, it might cause the needle to break, upper thread to break while stitching, not catching the bobbin thread, skip stitches, etc.
Gurrrrrrl you betta take some basic clothes and make them oh so fab! I'm so inspired and empowered to find my inner designer and do a FIFTYlicious twirl in my DIYs. 🙋🏾🙋🏾🙋🏾🙋🏾😍😍😍😍😍😍
You’re so creative! Your adorable little girl looks so sad, though, starting at 11:33, like she’s wishing you would play with her instead of that sweater. 💔 😢 She’s so cute. I like how she’s all happy again, at the end of the vid, when mommy’s done and including her in the little modeling sesh 😊
16:10 I feel like a walking foot would help feed the fabric through at this point. But maybe that is the quilter in me. I love a walking foot. These are fun tutorials. Thanks for sharing.
The blanket one I did 2 years ago but I cut straight across the top making a poncho then pulling it over my head I can tuck the front into the back n pull the back towards the front belt it n I have a cozy fluffy dress for fall n winter so I’ll need to try that slit up the middle n stitch idea I like it a lot
Four for the price of one! I really like the men’s oversized shirt refashion. Very clear instructions. Of course, I would wear it with leggings and shortie boots but that’s because it’s cold here.
the cardi diy is fab, 'cos you have to have an eye for style to know what works and you transformed that cardi into a style piece. Great ideas you have. Everything looks great on you anyway : ) you are so good at alteration, remind me of my darling Mother who could transform anything....
That cardigan, with that nice thick yolk edge, would lend itself to some blingy embellishments like you've done on many other DIYs. I think that would be really pretty and an easy way to make a 'holiday' outfit when paired with a nice skirt or leggings. Got my creative ideas flowing now!
Your ideas are always killer but as fellow content creators we also love your editing and stock music! Would you share what stock house you use for your awesome music?
Perfect. I bought an ivory cardigan sweater the other day and it has buttons like yours started with. I don't love them -- they look cheaper than the rest of the sweater. I need to get a couple of things at JoAnn's later this week and will look for buttons, too. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you Orly!! As you promised, lots of sewing. And now I can send this vid link to a friend who's been bugging me to show her how to change a tshirt into a peplum dress!!
I'm totally making one of those blanket wraps just to wear around the house during quarantine. My family likes the house to be cold and I freeze constantly but couldn't figure out how to wear a blanket lol. I love them all!

Thanks for tip, I’m going try that!
Wow what a great hack!
If you have a gathering foot that would work to create the ruffle for the shirt or use a zig zag stitch over dental floss. Pull the floss to create the gather.
You sew over pins!! YAAAY! Most machines are designed to, but people are scared to. Good job as always on your DIY fashions!!
omg this is the first positive comment about that!! everyone else is like "what are you doing!!? you're gonna break your needles!" haha that's how my grandma taught me and I've never had a problem
@@OrlysChannelof you break the needle, put in a new 1!!!
Yes! Been doing it for 50 years
Thank you!! You have given me hope and allowed my imagination to grow !! We are talking about a 52 year old mum that loves fashion at a reasonable price !! 😘

i always love it when designers wear the clothes they make in their videos, you're one of them Orly
That peplum shirt creation is incredible! Amazing how you saw that ultra cute shirt in that huge blah T, and brought it out. “Hooray” indeed 😄
The shirt dress 😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥
Oh Orly, mother daughter cardigans. Sweet. Thanks
I'm a sewer. One thing one of my mentors taught me was buttons can make or break an outfit. My poor kids hated when I went shopping for buttons ~~ hours to find the "just right" fit"!
That leopard blanket cardigan is fire!!!
Those turned out so cute. I personally love refashioning old blankets or sheets into new stuff
I love the belt you wore with the shirt dress!

LOVE your creations. Just a tip: you can purchase a gathering foot for your sewing machine. Makes life so much easier 😊
omg I need that
@@OrlysChannel not sure what your machine is Walmart has them😂👍
When your girls get to be teens,, they will have an awesome original wardrobe!!

The military style makeover is so cool
You are the only one subscription I look forward it. I wake up and say it's Friday and Orly!
omg that's the nicest! thank you!
That last dress is awesome
That button trick - 🤯🤯 I’ve never thought about doubling the thread when sewing on a button!

The shirtdress is absolutely AMAZING!!
I constantly change out the buttons on a piece that either I’ve thrifted or just want to upgrade the look. It makes such a difference and is the least expensive thing you can do.
Thats a great tip to sew the buttons thru the buttonholes if you don't need to open the cardi. It won't get pulled or slump.
as a collector of special buttons sometimes it's nice to use all different buttons, conversation starter😂
You're the best Orly. Everything you touch turn to gold... Words aren't enough to commended you on your craftsmanship. . I just love love your work.. 😘😘👏👏👏
I love when your videos are posted by my break at work!! Keep up the great ideas and entertainment!!
haha yes!!
I’m not sure what’s my favorite, luv luv them all...
I think my heart skipped a beat... sweeet giveaway! The peplum top is really my FAV!!!!

Wow!!!what a good job you did to all pieces.
I love your projects because you do things the way I was taught from my mother and grandmother!!
Love the simple button idea
It would be great if you could show the threading and sewing process in a contrast stitch (just for the video, finish with the color you actually use, but just so it is easier to see on camera). Love this video Orly 😘!
That mini anxiety when you're stitching through the pins. Gurllll.. anyway, lovin the DIY's 💕💕😘😘
hahah I know it kills everyone. It's how my grandma taught me
Right!? I was like how is that possible... and not breaking the needle from the machine ... 😂
IKR....I tried that and it didn't work out that well.... 🤣🤣🤣
@V Rostova my machine is a singer

Your blanket cardigan just gave me an idea to use a very similar blanket. It's going to be just big enough for a jacket I want for winter.
