Wow, Les Paul's banter is hilarious! Came here for the guitar, stayed for the cutting wit. Sharp as a tack. What an honour for anyone lucky enough to have been around at these shows.
The clarity and feeling of Les' single note lines are so sweet. Joe's sustain made Summertime shimmer. Yet another special version of it. Amazing how Summertime is amenable to so many different renditions.
Most folks don't know this: Joe is playing several Eddie Harris lines here, especially in the beginning from, 1:49 to 2:11 ( Joe grew up listening to him through his mother who was an avid jazz and soul music fan ). Satch may not be a Jazz player but he's can swing when he wants to.
Stratokikay His “ The In Sound “ is a great first entry to his records. But his live recordings features a lot more of that funky/Cannonball Adderley sound.
You ever hear him do Cool #9? His transitioning from Wes Montgomery/ George Benson feeling lines to his signature sound and feel is flawless. Shows that the jazz portion of a "fusion" equation doesn't NEED to be progressive.
As I watched this I just had to imagine that all of Joe's effects and various stomp boxes were invented back in the 40's and 50's. It was fun watching these two guys make a great musical connection. It certainly looked like Les was enjoying watching his legacy of musical instrumental creativity come out of Satch's fingers. Great video, really enjoyed it!
I don't know how he sets up now but Joe used to run with minimal pedals, letting an eventide harmonizer do the bulk of the processing of his tone since it could emulate pretty much any pedal or effect created up to the point of its introduction without having to worry about level/gain stacking like when you run multiple pedals. I read him say one time that there was even a setting to emulate a dying battery in a pedal. Pretty sure his old floor setup used to be the controller/ trigger for the eventide, a vox wah, a DS1 and not much else. Of course he's a pedal addict so no telling how long he rolled that way but I'm sure it helped out in live situations, considering the amount of processing needed for that tone.

This reminds me so much of the last conversation I had with my grandpa a great trombonist and composer who gave me twelve tons of crap for playing electric guitar!

I'm seeing a lot of comments about Joe being 'respectful'. Which I think is true, given that he generally comes across as genuine and humble person. But to be honest, I think his attention was also divided between partly trying to tame his usually beastlike sound (comparably) within such a setting, and partly being (justifiably) terrified of being around a living legend. It may just be me, but I can hear nerves in his playing that blues. There's not a lot of places to hide there compared to his own, thickly distorted, familiar music and band. And Les Paul was an absolute monster on his instrument back in the day, and he's seen and heard dozens of world-class players.

Gripe, gripe, gripe... ya'll sound like a bunch of seniors yelling at the neighbor kid to get off your lawn. I enjoyed the hell out of this clip, and don't feel the need to trash the GUEST to prop up Les.

Wonderful! Gutted that just after a trip to New York in 2004 , I heard that Les Paul played every week in a club there. One of the first tunes I tried to play as a rookie guitar player was Chicken Reel by Les . It was a B side of an old 78 of my grandfathers. I still can’t play it anything like as well as he. “Reel” talkin’ guitar stuff. Cluck cluck!
He basically helped invent the delay 😑 People who don't know how to fucking use it as an effect and instead base their whole playing around an effect, or effects, is what's bothersome.
I liked the delay. I liked the way the Ibenez looks and sounds. And it's incredible compared to the Les Paul which is a heavy thick neck ache after you play for a few hours. But I still have several of them cause I wanna be cool...
I have played many Ibanez guitars and they will never have the tone a LP can put out unless they get their materials, but that would put them out of business.
He's got a dry sense of humor. Everyone who plays there knows what to expect. They go anyway. I don't think it bothers them. It's just Les. Les is a-okay.

He can play a Les Paul, he can play an Ibanez, he can play a broom handle if you string it. Why would he HAVE to play a Les Paul? They knew who he was, and who he endorses when they invited him. Gripe, gripe, gripe... ya'll sound like a bunch of seniors yelling at the neighbor kid to get off your lawn. I enjoyed the hell out of this clip, and don't feel the need to trash the GUEST to prop up Les.
I like Joe, but the delay was cheesy as heck
Get off my fucking lawn you twat
Les Paul is a guitar, Joe is not.
Skullywag ! A New exciting guitar brand from China that copies the universe ! Only much worse!
Ya pick on one of greatest guitar player’s ever to walk the earth
I saw Joe when I lived in Texas way back. It was epic.
Les: (To Sat) What else have you got? (To Audience) Like I told you, you can go out humming this thing that he just played.
(Les is giving a compliment to Sat, but then Sat makes the following bum-headed comment)
Sat: Most of the stuff I play is instrumental music, it's usually complicated and we have to rehearse it so...
Les: Oh, you do! One of those wise guys hum.....Oh, what I'am doing isn't exactly stupid!
Sat: But you guys have rehearsed,I think, right?
(Now Les goes for the kill..with...)
Les: But it took me 93 years to get it. (To Audience) At least he's got a good head of hair, he just didn't bring it with him! (To Sat) You should put some Viagra on that hair!
----ROFL---
Pritram
Idiot: he didn't say that at 5:15. Joe told him he had an Ibanez, & what it could do
& Les said, oh what a shame.
you're reading a way too much into that , in fact you're the bum head here , Joes makin a statement of fact , theres no way anybody could jam along to his tunes without knowin the chord changes . these guys were just fartin round like guys do on stage , you're makin it into some idiotic drama which it aint
The best thing Joe did was call out Summertime. Les was all over that.
Sat is one of the top 10 best guitarist on this planet. Not to many guys can out match him in a showdown guitar rif.
Poor Joe, Les's banter slowed him down to a crawl on the last one.
thank you Mr. Paul
man.... five notes in you can tell that's SATCH playing just by his bends and chords...
and sitting in with a legend...too cool
Not many newer guitarists like that coming out of the pipeline in the last 30 years or so.
I love Satch and he shows such a calm attitude for something that would drive someone with his talent to curse! these styles don't mesh no doubt!
Two gentleman playing the Good Old Blues.
I would have been honored to be roasted by Les lol! He means nothing by it its just his way of mixing it up.
Les totally roasted joe😂😂😂... Amazing person les was...
Joe makes all music beautiful / Les Paul’s soul shows even in simple notes.
Thank you Chris Lentz.
Les Paul's like, "I can't do that stuff".
that time Les Paul was 93 years old! huge respect for him!
I love joe he’s a fantastic human being
Joe shouldn't have used delay! You can tell Les Paul ain't down with the delay...
Joe is a master and the master can use delay if he so chooses..haha
Les had three delay pedals in his own setup!
Love Les Paul. Satriani is great & a Gent.
Joe Satriani, "groove master extraordinaire," paying his respects to the "Grand Master."
Thanks Chris.
did Les Paul just roast Joe??? 😂
The Bear Ha ha. Burned him down!!!
Les loved to tear into his guests ... was just good natured fun
He's got a dry sense of humor. Everyone who plays there knows what to expect. They go anyway. I don't think it bothers them. It's just Les. Les is a-okay.
PRS an' Paul are legendary, but old farts...humiliate others...
Pretty much. I always held Satch as an example of taste in his field. Man he misjudged this bout
Joe should have ditched the delay pedal. Out of sync with proceedings.
why les invented it
