- On June 9th, 2011 the Camden City Fire Department was distpatched to the intersection of Chestnut and Orchard Streets for a Building fire. Upon arrivial Ladder Company 2, Squad 7 and Battalion 1 Glassman reported heavy fire in a three story vacant structure with exposure issues. Ladder 2 and Squad 7 immediately went into service to protect the exposures on the "D" side of the building.
Battalion 1 and Car 1 Harper eventually called a total 14 alarms. Companies from Camden, Gloucester and Burlington Counties were called in to help battle the blaze that consumed two city blocks. There were a few minor firefighter injuries. The cause of this blaze is under investigation.
Holy cow! The whole block practically burned down!
Very scary! And I am impressed with the bravery of the firefighters. There is only so much they can do.
At least if nobody dies, then mission accomplished. You can always rebuild a new more fire-resistant structure. Human lives are what is most important!
I remember this like this was yesterday, i was in the second grade and this was literally 2 blocks behind where I lived. Everyone received hotels and money. Some got new homes
Big fire! At least five dollars damage.
Oh that's simple...unless there's lives at stake all we're gonna do is keep the fire in check. Not gonna go risking our lives for abandoned property
The person holding the camera did a very good job of covering the scene. Nice editing as well.
2 city blocks destroyed?! That is insane!
That wind constantly shifting makes a tough job into a real pain and adds to the danger of not seeing the signs of collapse.
There are no 1" hoses being used in this video. Camden is an urban fire dept. and like most urban depts they don't carry hard suction (it's not vacuum hoses) or low level strainers. The water in the gutters is full of debris and is not a reliable source of water supply.
@sharppointy1 Hello, yes we try to force the wall inward to fall on itself if it is going to collapse. The idea is that we would rather it fall in then out on one of us if we should have to be close to the building, or what is left. Hope it helps thanks for the kind words.
@patcism In general firefighting terms Alpha is the front of the building with Bravo being the left side, Charlie being the back, and Delta being the right side. A for the front and sides B C & D go clockwise around the building.
Depending on the fire, and how much water is available, they use different amounts of water. In the beginning, they're using 1" hoses, whereas towards the end they're using 2 1/2" hose. As for the water in the gutters, I'm assuming you mean the water collecting on the road. That can also be reused. The pumpers and or tankers have vacuum hoses for such reasons.
Keep Camden Beautiful!
What did the investigation ever determine?
I remember when that happened I live in Barrington and if that went to 15 alarms we would've been there and that was like the HOTTEST day of the year
Respect to you all.
I remember this fire well. I grew up in the area and worked in Camden at the time. It was a brutally hot day when this happened, too.
Not really the citys responsibilty. The big problem is iresponsponsible owners. Waterbury Ct just had a simular fire. The building owner had closed a going factory just to cash out.He owes at least a million in taxes, and could care less as long He is out on his big boat! They need to go after these deliquent taxes.
Yes I did watch the video. They can protect the other structures around it, which is what firefighters usual do. However, I knew a firefighter who was battling an abandon structure fire one night and a brick wall collapsed on him, He and a couple of other firefighters were badly injuried as a result! They were lucky that they weren't killed. That's why I say, let em burn to the damn ground! Your entitled to your opinon. so don't you slam me for mine!!!!
I think the word "Wow" about sums it up.
It means he is a firefighter from West Berlin, NJ in Camden County. Is that the answer you were looking for?
thats a sweet camera. great footage too thanks.
That reminds me of the old newsreel footage that i've seen of the London Blitz with the fire smoke and bricks scattered all over etc.
nice footage, looks like there's some big ass fires over there in Camden.
do they ever test the fire hydrants? we do it sometimes but mostly its some other department within the city
what state was this fire in this looks alot like a fire i saw on the news in baltimore
What distinguishes the different sides of the building? How does it work?
So despite the efforts of the firfighters the building was saved?
U know is their even anything in that building or is it just abandon? i am wondering if they should just of nock it down and contain the fire that way with so much going on their not really much in the way of containing this fire.
What camera did you shoot this on?
Wow! Those shots are really coll! You should have submitted them to the news!
I remember this fire I don't know what was worse this day the temperature that day if I remember correctly real feal 102 degrees high humidity or the fire both are not a firefighters help at all they took one hell of beating that day
Thanks for the vote of confidence.I,m just so tired of the "Venture capitilist assholes" closing going concerns just to cash out. then walking away and letting towns and cities deal with the aftermath. They won,t even pay thier taxes!
Nice work, Dave!
What was the control time on this fire?
And today it's torn down and they're putting art work up there. Very pretty
the wind looks horrible that day, all those master streams and still can't aim it at the fire without it blowing away from it.
look at all that water
Save your water.Camden been gone a long time.
This looks like a war zone or something but great work filming and hats off to the fire fighters
man im sure that wind wasnt helping either
You did a great job!
I feel bad for that state Fire Marshall, ok... point of origin in a 14 alarm wind driven fire.
Really nice camera (not sarcasm). Is it a DSLR? Looks like a full frame sensor.
No, it's a real camcorder system. Only am idiot would do that dslr video fad bullshit in 2017 on a news scene.
It was a 7D on a Jag35 shoulder rig.
Kandi Klover I did it in 2011... and still do it now.
man that fire is cazy never seen something that bih
Great work boys, that one looked liked a bitch!! A handful of helicopters with Bambi-buckets would have been nice, but I don't know if they have those type of resources in that region. I've only been on a couple urban fires where the helos came in for water drops, made one helluva difference!! Once again, fantastic work, looks like they managed it great and worked through adversity!!
So 12 people died wow that's 5 less then normal
Hey, can I please use this in a film I'm making?
Two city blocks?! How did it keep spreading so fast? Were they not able to wet down the surrounding buildings in time?
Old buildings are usually more flammable
The biggest fire we've ever fought where I live is a 3rd alarm. We had 2 units from each of the 9 companies in the entire county there with over 100 Firefighters. How many Firefighters/apparatus were at this fire?
2:18 yeah im afraid we dont need the TIC any more Cap, we got the fire back here lol
That poor old building!
This has to be volunteer company
Jacob Hawthorne it said City of Camden, played dept.
@TheCodymcclung51 Thanks! That is pretty interesting!
Barrington is only 15 mins away by the way
Is this urban renewal Detroit style? How did the fire spread so fast and jump over streets.
GARY HESS There was a footbridge connecting the main warehouse to the office, which spanned over the street, the rest was the wind.
Good lord...what a disaster area. Looks like a bomb went off.
Just a joke vidio, am I right?
There seems to be more water in the gutters than used on the fire!!!!
was this in Camden maine?
+Ultr a New Jersey. Camden Maine is pretty small.
+MrBruinman86 good point lol
How pathetic for allowing a fire to spread to that magnitude... very sad and shameful of the FD! 😥
Not to mention it happens on 9/11?
HUH?
Ok im legit going to lose it if someone tells me there was a fire with more alarms than this, I THOUGHT 4TH WAS THE MOST Christ all mighty
Firestartergold 1 I just came from watching a 10 alarm fire.
I half expected to see some ff's appear wearing AFS uniforms and tin hats and the half burned out wrecks of London buses with Hovis adverts on them lol
good video on this working fire. Kind of reminds of Detroit, MI and their bad time with multible fires on the same street, as they call it "Hell Night" and it happens every year. Maybe that is why Detroit is fucked city, with no hope of survival.
It’s not called Hell Night in Detroit dummazz it’s called “Devils night”
Man I wish I had been there so many many photos I could have taken and submited to national geographic.
Do they believe in water in Camden?
After water is sprayed into the buildings THEN it runs out into the gutters numb nuts! Damn...
That place looks like a war zone and they had that big fire too!
WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED IT'S CAMDEN!?
New Jersey's urban renewal plan in action.
Worse thing I've seen was grenfell tower 40+ pump fire all London alot of surrding areas I wish we had the same equipment as you America has like the tower ladders or arieals aren't that tall
Callum Walker our aerials in the U.K. are taller and more versatile. We just don’t have as many of them because we don’t work in ‘companies’. The equipment carried on an Engine, Ladder and Rescue in the USA is all on one vehicle in the U.K, the Rescue Pump Ladder (RPL). We don’t need aerials like they do in the states and we don’t do the dangerous practice of ‘venting’ in the same way, hence we don’t have many line of duty deaths either.
Your comments just a joke right? Just how you misspelled video? K
2:40 Guys no SCBA ?! In this thick Smoke ??
There's LITERALLY a guy in SCBA at 2:40. The wind shifted and banked the smoke down. No one died. Relax.
A Guy ...hmmm go back to 2:35 then you see one infront the Camera without.maybe a Captain or so. I now leading People at Firefighters like Capt. and Chiefs have a automated SCBA in thier Throat.
Lappi Lappland this was 2 city blocks of exterior firefighting. Relax bro.
GTA 4; Romans Taxi Depot. :D
yaaaay fire alright yeah!!
Foam
Did you know there's no fire hydrants at all in the UK?
+Digimutant not like the ones they have in the states we don't it's a little flap on the street.
+Digimutant how am i ignorant when where i live in the north of England that's exactly what we have & the fire brigade trap the water pipes??
+Digimutant nope i was born & raised in Darlington England, if you look closely on our streets you'll see on the pavements the little square flaps were the fb tap the main water lines which is then fed into a tanker via lines then fed into hoses.
If it's a small fire they'll use their on board water supply but not on a large structure fire as they have limited capacity for water storage. Plus i have the utmost respect for ALL FD's they do a bloody hard job in horrendous conditions.
So in other words, you do have hydrants in the UK. You just described to a T what a fire hydrant is. Just because the part you see looks different, doesnt mean its not a hydrant. It gets water from the main, into the fire truck, for use in fire suppression. Doesnt matter what shape, size or color it is, it still serves the same exact purpose.
Can you form a complete, logical sentance? What you just wrote makes absolutely no sense what so ever.

I bet FDNY was requested
Maybe Philadelphia would have been better?
Camden is in South Jersey. Philadelphia FD would’ve been better considering it’s less than a 15 minute drive
H
Urban revitalization Camden no big loss
now how the hell (literally) did they manage to start that fire in an abandoned building?
Perhaps homeless people cooking. Or drug users lighting up a torch to cook their product.
Or, it was set on purpose
did you watch the video? the fire already spread two city blocks, When should the firemen start fighting it when its burned 12 blocks and approaching the city center???????
noooooooo it was 12 alarms. nobody died
@patcism Yeah, the easiest way to remember is that (typically) the A side is the Address side, and then its just clock wise to get the rest of the sides.
Camden looks like Detroit....lots of urban renewal going on.
Wow. That was a mess. Glad everyone went home! Stay safe brothers (and sisters.)
DAME HOW DID IT GET SO BAD AND SO BIG?
great footage Dave!
Great Video !
