I turned 40 last year and realized i couldnt do pullups anymore. That was a wake up call. I started dieting and exercising with the goal of reaching 10. A year later and im down 50lbs, and can easily do 10, and do 5 sets of 10 a few times a week. Watching this video makes me want to see what my max is when i hit the gym tomorrow. If you get into your 40s and wake up and wonder why you feel sick and tired, and where all the weight came from, you can turn it around.

Nice job man, I also just hit 10 consecutive pull ups for the first time today. I think when I get to 12 consecutive imma start doing weighted pull ups, if you can do 5 sets of 10 easy I'd reccomend you start trying weighted pull ups as well!

10 is sort of easy on my first set. Steady, clean, all the way down and up. After that, it gets harder and a little sloppier to be honest. I always stop at 10, so maybe I should try to see how many I can do. I probably can't do many more than 10 clean, so maybe 15? I'll try Monday.

    • @glenc2353

When I was 240lbs last year and couldn't do more than a couple, it was disappointing. I'm 40 years old and 6'3". Shouldn't be that hard. Now that I'm 185lbs, it's easier not pulling up all that weight. I think my calorie deficit is hindering my strength though. I noticed my endurance is up, but I lift less than I did a while ago. Also, I lift fasted, so maybe that's a factor. I don't know. This whole fitness journey is new to me, so there is so much to learn.

I wonder if the increased muscle mass ive put on has made it harder in a way, because ive only just got the pull up bar and cable system VS training that exercise from get go. Now with dips, prob i could probably do 10-15 max to start. In the year ive been able to do a max of 40. Huge difference in ability. Ive been doing them in the corner of kitchen bench top. Back to pull ups, i start by doing my 4 or 5 pull ups for first set, then do cable pull downs , and i hope to build up in weight from there, which will i hope aid in the pull ups ( i dont have those resistance bands to assist)

I’m working on powerlifting now, but for a while I was doing calisthenics in a park. One morning, an elderly man (70+) in an SUV pulled up just as I was about to leave. I watched him get out of his car, walk slowly over to the bar, and do five perfect pull ups. It gave me the chills and I don’t think I’ll ever forget that. I see too many people using age as an excuse, who are decades younger than the man at the park.

    • @rikmoran3963
      @rikmoran3963 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

I don't think they are using age as an excuse. I think they genuinely believe that they are too old to train. As you get older, people are constantly telling you that you are too old to do certain things and if you hear it enough times you start to believe it. I used to be extreme;y fit when I was younger, but my health had reached a very low point as I headed into my fifties due to long working hours, injuries and general neglect. I used to struggle to get out of chairs, up stairs etc. Due to an issue with my legs I had to start doing some physio exercises and within 3 months I no longer had issues getting out of chairs etc. I feel motivated to do more training, as I feel like I did 15-20 years ago. It makes me wonder about older people who you see struggling to stand up and if they could improve the quality of their lives if someone took the trouble to help them exercise. I believe that exercising when you get older is probably more important than when you are younger, when you already have a degree of fitness.

Even crazier is how many people gave up after putting in only ~20-40% effort. Only Steve and a few others seemed to fully try.

@@ering1107 It’s not a lack of pride to not try because they never said to anyone they wanted to.
Think about it like this, a guy really wants a girl, if he admits to himself and others he wants her and is going to try and pursue her than he has to face the fact that despite his best efforts she might reject him. Ego doesn’t like that so the safer thing is just to lie to others (and possibly even himself) about liking her… That is also a form of pride, wanting to only try things you know you’d be good at.

One day our squadron busted out some jump ropes and I thought, "I haven't jumped rope in a decade, but my cardio is off the charts so this should be cake." To my surprise, I was gassed after about two minutes. It's amazing how your body adapts, but only to the specific thing it's used to. I learned that, in the world of fitness, being good at something similar is not always translatable, which is why I (unpopularly) respect the hell out of crossfit athletes.

@@MrCmon113 I dont think their pullups where perfect but they where pretty good form and with perfect form they might do like 3 less. The people that claim to easilly do 30 are kinda bullshitting tho because 30 is a LOT. Like I could do a one arm pullup when I couldnt do more then 20 pullups without even ever training for it. Thats how much 20 good pullups are worth.

I am 59 and I do pull-ups at least twice per week. My daughters are impressed because so many young people can't do one. Pushups and pull-ups are high-yield exercises in return for a modest time commitment.

@Slawsers 35 reps at any bodyweight is actually insane. When you start adding mass though the reps start dropping. Similar story, 20 reps at 150lb and 12 reps at 200lb.

Pushups are SO under rated. I do sometimes 150 in a day.. NO not all in one set.. but the pump is always there.. Still weak on pullups, though

Young people are getting married way too young. an I phone is a lousy sex partner.. and kids are not anywhere close to being in the same shape we were at their age. 60 years ago it was like wrestle with my neighbor for half an hour, then shoot some hoops.. probably 4-5 times a week. but we had typewriters, and no computers. in fact no electronic calculators, but a slide rule . The kids today never go out, or work out.. just eat junk food and get fat

When I started working out again several months ago, it took me 2 months to be able to do a single pull up. It felt really good, like a nice tangible milestone in fitness. Now I can do at least 5 with perfect form, maybe a couple more if I struggled for it. I think it's a really good measure of someone's fitness because it directly pits them against their own bodyweight.

I loved this video! Wish I had been there. I'm a woman, and it took me three months of training to get my first pull-up of my life. I was 36 at the time. I didn't know it was possible for women to do pull-ups. I have a clear memory of my freshman year of high school: Our gym teacher had the girls go up to the pull-up bar one by one for the physical fitness exam. Not even one girl from the class could do a pull-up--even our school's star athlete who was a state swimming champion. She got halfway up and was kicking as if she could swim the rest of the way up. Everyone was rooting for her and laughing at her at the same time. Even she couldn't do it.
Finally at 36 years old, 22 years later, I was able to complete one pull-up and three consecutive chin-ups. One of the proudest moments of my life.
