Julie Kavner started out on this show pretty pudgy but she lost a lot of weight by this season. Supposedly she's still an avid fitness buff to this day.
Yeah that's something that makes me sad about the show, I feel like if i watch this often this toxic stuff might slowly leach into my mind:(but i dont want to quit watching because i love this show so much🥺
People were absolutely cruel to fat people in the 70's. And very objectifying of women. It had her really believing she was unworthy. I'm so proud of her in this episode for being true to herself and not settling for someone shallow who would treat her like crap if she gained a little weight!!
People are not kind to the thin small breasted girls either. I was told that if I turn sideways and stuck out my tongue I look like a zipper. Either way it didn't seem a girl could win if you weren't what was considered picture perfect
Years ago I dated a man who told me to lose weight & I wasn't overweight. I was very happy with my shape & appearance. So I told him to take a hike. Men!!!! Brenda looked fabulous in that bkack jumpsuit. Great episode!!! Love Rhoda. I love the Boho look.🎉❤😊
She was gorgeous but on this show she had worst problems: Dressed like a man in women's clothes, that harsh blush and the horrible hair! The seventies femininity completely passed her on this show!
You have to understand that Brenda and Rhoda used to be much heavier, and this kind of stigma does not ever really leave most women. There is so much pressure on women to be thin and beautiful in society, and when not then, a woman almost always does not feel beautiful, true or not.
Remember in the beginning episodes I always had Brenda in what were called " elephant pants" at the time. I'm sure they used them to make her look heavier than she actually was. Surely she was not a skinny girl and not really Slim either but she does not have a small frame.
@@jeanmiller1142 we had elephant bells in the 70s. Mens Levi's. We would have our aunt sew them snug to just above the knee then leave the big bell . Brenda often wore palazzo pants which are in style now. But I'm too short for them. However bells are back !!
Oh I though I would die when they stopped making bell bottoms and forced straight legs on us. I felt like I was wearing 1950s pants. I hated it. Bells are back now. Hubby and I each bought flares but we also each got a pair of actual bell bottoms. He has long hair too and wore a 70s shirt with his bells and ran in the grocery store. We have the glare arms in shirts and the lacy and crocheted tops to wear over tanks now too. Im loving it. Now to find a couple of decent bandanas or scarfs to tie like Rhoda does. Let's make it a come back. Somebody has to start it! I even bought a pair of ripped up white jeans. Im 59, but who cares? I was an original baby hippie at the end of it all.😊🌼
What a lowlife that guy was! Assuming he weighed 200 lbs (and he probably doesn't) to say he couldn't ride the elevator with Brenda is to accuse her of weighing 700 lbs for the 900 lb limit. I doubt she's ever weighed 200 lbs even. This guy deserves a kick in the butt.
I know it is a comedy, but didn't really think that line should have gotten a laugh. She is such a good actress, I really felt her pain at that moment.
I never understood the fat jokes on this show. How even in S1 she could have been considered fat! I was a kid growing up in the 70s and women like Mary, Rhoda and Brenda were who I thought hip, liberated, enlightened women were supposed to be. But having a weight problem and a mother with a weight problem, I was super sensitive to all the times people laughed at Brenda's self-esteem and "weight problems". Thinking, as a kid, "well, if the world thinks of HER as fat, what hope do I have?" I'm glad things like that aren't in writers' notebooks for quick and cheap laughs anymore, but still... Also, I have always loved the sister dynamic between Rho and Bren! Great series!
Poor Brenda but she knew in advance what kind of guy he was and saved herself from a lot of hurt , sometimes its better to be on your own. I like when he said if I was ugly would you still go out with me ? He wasn't expecting her to say YES . We all have a little Brenda in us. Look at me I just broke up with my g/f and thats all we were , friends. I had wished and hope it would be more. I paid for the dinners and the movies and even saved her a parking space so when she got home from work she would have a parking spot for her car. I would buy her flowers from time to time and pay for her earrings when she wanted to buy some. When Valentines came I bought her the big stuffed Snoopy she wanted and I was wondering what I would get. You know what she bought me , Hand Soap ! Can you believe it ! she said it smelled good. I finally called it quits for two reasons , I couldn't afford her anymore and I thought there would be somthing between us more ; you see now a little like Brenda.
Sometimes its better to not go for the extra pretty girls. Go for someone more like Brenda. She isn't a Narcissist. Dont let a woman constantly use you or walk on you. Stay sweet but be sure to wordlessly have an air of confidence so women respect you. You can't love someone you don't respect. When I was young guys that pampered me turned me off. I think she learned it from her mother. And I think Rhoda was self-talking as she was saying these things to Brenda. They both needed some help in this area
It seems like they put Brenda in frumpy clothes most of the time so she'd look more overweight than she actually was to help sell her as someone who overeats, but still, good for her.
They did that to Rhoda on NTM. I saw layers of clothing. A t shirt, a blouse and a sweatshirt on top of who knows what else.Plus they made clothing thicker back then. Rhoda was never heavy.

Brenda had a similar transformation from overalls to that black jumpsuit, that Rhoda did, when she won the beauty contest at Hemple's Department Store, in an episode of MTM.

Neither of these women were overweight. This storyline is tired. They just dressed them differently when they were supposed to be "overweight" vs when they "lost weight". You can tell that the creators knew neither was actually plus sized because of the actors they chose in that group scene. They were so sweet together. He already had a girlfriend, and he lived in Washington, D.C., where he would be returning. End of the line for Brenda.
Maintenance is an important part of weight loss. No one should be made to leave if they want to stay in. It is counter-intuitive to leave, and lose out on the group's support. A ridiculous set-up.
During the 1970s, people were not obsessed with weight. Rhoda never looked fat anytime. Brenda was, at times, kind of chubby, but never enough to be repulsive. She looked about average. That Eric was a jackass, he was who deemed Brenda obese, and she was never that. Basically, she ate too much junk food. The 1980s decade was weight-obsessive, and some people became anorexic. Classic Brenda episode. Love the chemistry Kavner and Harper always had. Like real sisters. Comedy icons.

When Brenda makes her goal, the part where the lady waves her wig around gets me every time lol

Rhoda and Brenda (Valerie Harper and Julie Kavner) were ALWAYS beautiful, inside and out, heavy or thin.
RIP Valerie Harper❤️
That was one of the best episodes. I wasn’t expecting that ending. Kudos Brenda! “You’ve come a long way baby”, as they used to say in those days.
