    As an American, I’m so sorry to hear about that lady’s experience with racism and ask her for her forgiveness. That is totally unacceptable that happened to her in the USA and I hope that she knows most Americans are not like that nor do we tolerate that behavior. We are a very tolerant respectable society but like in any society and country we have a couple bad apples but the majority of Americans do not tolerate that behavior.

      I don't want to be rude, but the majority are like that. I saw americans articles about the increasing asian hate in US, old ladies being beat up on the streets, are videos here on youtube about it. A lot of chinese, koreans being acuse to spread covid-19 in US.... is not what the world saw

      I bet the persons who was raciest to that lady were blacks here because there are a lot of blacks that victimize Asians here because they are smart, kind, courteous people and the blacks feel less than others instead of trying harder to get educated to uplift their culture they lash out in violence instead, they do it to white people too or try to blame them for their lack or laziness of trying harder.

Most Americans would flip out if they saw someone being treated like that. the USA is open-minded??? I think some of us are, but not most. I personally don't think being more "progressive" or "liberal" means you are more openminded, even though that is what the word "liberal" was actually supposed to mean. Americans on average are more liberal in regards to social movements, but that doesn't make us more openminded. I think people here are actually too stubborn and closedminded. EVERY OTHER COUNTRY watches our movies, shows, and listens to our music. But how many Caucasian or african americans listen to latin music? Kpop? Jpop? or indian music? How many people do you know who watch kdramas, bollywood movies, anime, and movies in foreign languages in the USA? Yet THE WHOLE WORLD watches american movies and listen to american music. Anime, kdramas, and kpop are getting SOME traction, BUT it is still a little weird to like that stuff. Despacito is probably the only latin song your average american would listen to. I think If americans were truly openminded we would see how good the entertainment in other countries actually is. The truth is that kpop, latin music, kdramas, and anime are super good. Americans avoid it becuase its in another language and that is weird to LOVE entertainment in languages most americans are too stubborn to learn...all while the rest of the world learns English. 🙄

    There’s a lot of comments here about racism in the US, but there is also a lot of racism in Korea. We’ve been denied into clubs and also not allowed into taxi’s because one of the members of our group was black. It goes both ways 🤷‍♂️

  • @hongjoongsbutterfly
    @hongjoongsbutterfly ปีที่แล้ว +21

    It's interesting to see that there are definitely some misconceptions. First, racism is very clearly an issue here in the US and I'm sorry that that woman was exposed to that while she visited...that being said, I watch a lot of different videos and channels and I feel like I've seen a large portion that point out that a portion of Koreans (especially older people) can be horribly racist too, especially to non-white foreigners. I also find it interesting that it's assume that just because English doesn't have polite forms built into the grammar that it means that we speak informally to people that are older than we are. Generally, people still try to be polite and address others with Sir/Miss/Ma'am, say please and thank you, and show respect to their elders.

    • @michaelcorbett4236
      @michaelcorbett4236 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In places like the UK and Ireland there are way more inflections of politeness than people think, especially for foreigners from Asia. There's an interesting video from a Japanese woman about this. She lived in England for a while. My wife is Filipina and she speaks English from birth (as well as Filipino dialects). Very often she'll say something or respond in a certain way and I have to tell her it's rude. Like saying "What?" when they don't hear you rather than "Sorry. What was that?". Being Irish myself, it's also funny how polite Irish people are, yet we swear and joke with strangers within minutes of meeting them. Even in some professional settings.

    • @hongjoongsbutterfly
      @hongjoongsbutterfly ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@michaelcorbett4236 Yes! I've been learning some Korean and they don't even usually say "Please" most of the time as we would in English because the politeness associated with it is just literally built into their grammar structures. So I guess they just really do not realize we can have that politeness while only having one grammar structure.

    • @michaelcorbett4236
      @michaelcorbett4236 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hongjoongsbutterfly What's even more mind-blowing for me as a native English speaker learning languages such as Korean, is that English used to have informal and formal structures (thee/thou - informal, you/your - formal). It was due to the Normans bringing it over from France in the 1100s. Aristocracy used it. But after 1800 "thou/thee" and all that were dropped and "you" became predominant. So even though we don't use formal/informal structures, technically English is always polite. It's like we're all speaking with ㅂ니다 all the time. And then on top of that we add all the polite nuances. Yet when foreigners learn English even when they speak with formal/informal structures they probably have no idea. Neither do native speakers!

      @@pepsi2022 I suggest you work on your reading comprehension before you reply to my comments.
      Literally THE VERY FIRST THING I SAID was acknowledging that racism is an issue in the US, so how exactly is that "ignoring racism in my own country"??? By me saying racism occurs in Korea, I'm pointing out that it happens in every country, not "condemning it as a racist country".
      Lastly, you do not know me or where I have been or what I have done. So try to refrain from making wild assumptions about people you don't know on the internet.

      racism shouldn't be tolerated anywhere. I also feel sorry that you've spotted racism in the Korean society, but the fact that there also exists racism in Korea does not justify the racism happening in the US or make the US a better country in regards to this issue. They are both bad. I know that there has been a systematic and consistent effort to combat racism in the American society, but still, lots of people are facing frustrating experiences and they are mostly happening in indirect and nuanced manners, aka micro agression.

    For lots of Koreans who are concerned, yes there lots of racism in America and I deeply apologize for it. It needs to be fixed. But there are also many more great people and we denounce the intolerance and ignorance that many people in my own country possess. And we are trying our best to stop the gun epidemic. Racism is everywhere not just in the US so please don't try and simplify it to just existing within their borders. I have suffered from racism while I traveled Europe, South Korea, South Africa, and a couple others. The point is I didn't dwell on it and moved on! I also met way more people who were positive than were negative. The kind lady in the interview also mentioned that. The difference between the US and South Korea for example is that I have a recourse to attempt to hold the racist person accountable while in Korea, that opportunity does not exist for me as a foreigner.

    3:35 for the lady that said America is racist, that's funny. A lot of the world considers Korea the most racist country in the world, especially against black people. Racism is not an American problem, it's a worldwide problem. The U.S. is a melting pot of cultures. We accept everyone, and everyone wants to live here. Korea is still relatively a homogeneous society.

      lol. you're comment is so ignorant. Americans enslaved and murdered Blacks. Blacks are still crying out injustice today in your so called melting pot. Shut up please.

      Lol what a joke you are sputtering. Every day innocent Asians die due to racism over there. Murder and physical violence is the highest form of discrimination, and Asians in US are ridiculed 24/7 in media. Considering its diverse society, it's even worse somehow. 🤔

      Every day in the US there are racist attacks and many people are injured or lose their lives. Physical attacks almost never happen in Korea. Furthermore, in the US racism is systemic. This means that it is rooted in various areas of society, from the job market to institutions, and it will take decades to completely eradicate it. How can you say the situation in Korea is worse?

      North America and South America are continents. 'America' is a term used to describe the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along with 'USA' and 'United States'. The majority of Americans call it America. I know because I was born and raised here and English is my native language. So yes, America is a country.

    • @l8terivy

      @@kamdenpookiethe goal is to change our language to decrease united states supremacy. it’s not fair that US citizens get to be called American, when natives from other North American countries and South American countries can’t do the same. Everyone in Asia gets to call themselves Asian, but only one country in the Americas get to call themselves American? Absolutely not.
