    What's also interesting, but Scott didn't mention, was that some already had Wun-Dar in-hand several weeks before it went on preorder. I heard people were finding it at a toy store in California, which had gotten a few figures and was just selling them like ordinary inventory. Kol-Darr was sold the same way through Mattel Creations, but he didn't sell out as quickly...and as of writing this comment, I had not heard of any Kol-Darrs leaking out.

    Mattel's handling of the Origins line has been a complete fiasco. They're never available at retail because scalpers buy up everything and sell them for inflated prices on eBay; timed exclusives like Sun Man, Kol-Dar, and Wun-Dar are victims to the same scumbags. They really need to find a better way to get these things into customer's hands; maybe they should start a new MOTU subscription service like Matty Collector.

    This is one of those figures I'd love to purchase (at regular retail price); one to open and one for the collection. But, I made myself this rule; if I can't get it at retail price, let it go!

    One mayor flaw in your theory tho… if they have tons of them in a warehouse just taking up space and they want to get rid of it quick to make room for need stuff, then wouldn’t customers be getting them now? Yet no one knows when they’ll be shipped. Some are saying October, for a product that’s just taking up space that’s a long time to be shipped.

    Wun-Dar was announced/planned as a Mattel Creations exclusive at the 2021 Power-Con along with Kol-Darr. It wasn't a SDCC overstock issue. I think one issue was that too many resellers bought them first over actual fans in that 2 min window the stock lasted. There's no way to control that in the presale process. There are hundreds of Ebay listing for Wun-Dar now, he can be bought, just not at the retail price. The demand for Wun-Dar far exceeds the supply, he might have not been a good choice for a Mattel Creations exclusive production quota. Maybe bringing back the subscription service to Creations would be beneficial to fans.

    • @timrollpickering
      @timrollpickering 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem is the demand for particular characters is very different and this mostly reflects whether they're general releases, type of store exclusives, single store exclusives or Creations exclusives. Some of these Mattel Creations exclusives would just shelf warm if put out in the numbers needed for general retail. That's not a lack of excitement - that's a sign of the very different numbers involved.
      (Which makes why they released an early mini comics colours Stratos ever more inexplicable. Make him a Creations exclusive or perhaps an online retailer exclusive. Make him a different character - the grey version's cardback actually shows the beige colour scheme on other Avionians - or make him an air force builder. But why he's out on general release and early mini comics Tri Klops was limited to a Creations exclusive option is inexplicable.)

    • @Charlie_5.5
      @Charlie_5.5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timrollpickering agree. I assume some characters are a bit of a gamble deciding what avenue to sell it thru. But if Mattel knows their market and fan base Wun-Dar was a safe retail bet. They could have made him a Deluxe if they wanted to, add the extra long hair head sculpt with brown hair and it would have sold out easy imo.

    • @timrollpickering
      @timrollpickering 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Charlie_5.5 The fanbase interested in this figure is tiny. Vocal but not enough to sustain it at retail. He's an ultra obscure part of Motu history that isn't part of many people's Motu childhoods (was he available in, say, Germany in the 1980s?) mainly known to the very hardcore fans. What broader retail does he have to the non fan part of the customer base?

    • @Charlie_5.5
      @Charlie_5.5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@timrollpickering I'll have to agree to disagree there. I think you're underestimating MOTU fan interest and knowledge of Wun-Dar/Savage He-Man. Anti-Eternia He-Man is more obscure and he's in a retail Wave.

  • @josephhunnewell5057
    @josephhunnewell5057 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In case you forgot, Wun-Dar was actually announced as a Mattel Creations exclusive back at Power-Con last year. So I don't agree that it was a figure intended for San Diego Comic-Con that they just now decided needed to be sold online. As for the anger and frustration being shown by the fans, I think it's twofold. First was the sell out in less than three minutes. Yes, this is annoying and shows that Mattel didn't produce nearly enough product to meet the demand. However, the part that you didn't even mention is that the figure was then relisted.
    Many customers got in on the "second wave" of orders. Shortly after that second wave sold out, the cancellations started going out. THIS is where a lot of the true anger and frustration comes from. Fans who thought they had a confirmed order were later greeted with an impersonal email informing them that their order was being cancelled. "Sorry, we don't have enough stock...here's a $10 coupon". Frankly I see the $10 redemption code as more of a slap in the face than anything else.
    Clearly the relisting of the figure was a mistake. However, the fact that Mattel isn't owning that mistake and doing whatever they can to make it right is, in my opinion, what really rubbed many of the fans the wrong way. Mattel screwed up and sending out mass cancellations is only making it worse. They need to admit their mistake and make it right. There's really no other way to say it, the way they've handled it up to now is bogus and the fans have every right to be upset about it.

    • @EckerKyle
      @EckerKyle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mostly agree with your analysis. They already admitted their mistake tho, and gave out a credit for $10. Good luck getting Amazon to give you a coupon for 60% of an item they canceled on you. It sucks, but I have a bumper sticker for everyone still upset. It reads "shit happens".

    • @timrollpickering
      @timrollpickering 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EckerKyle The $10 coupon is useless for many. There's not a lot of available product on Mattel Creations that your average Motu Origins fan is interested in and hasn't already got. And if you try to use the coupon during a future exclusive drop it will just add to the processing time and make it even less likely you'll get one.
      There's also a lot of international would be buyers annoyed that their cards were charged and then reimbursed for a lesser amount instead of simply reversing the transaction. So they have had to pay for the privilege of having an order for an hour with little comeback (given international shipping rates the offerings on the site don't price well - e.g. Stridor is still cheaper in stores here than his displayed price on the site even before you add international postage and that nonsense of not including sales tax in the display price).

      It's mostly just Mattel. I have no idea what the actual production run is but I suspect it's lower than it should have been.
      Every time I go to Comic-Con the Mattel stuff sells out first and it's not because they're any better than other companies it's just BS that they don't make enough even for people attending Comic-Con.
      Where are you compared to companies like Hasbro with a strong brand like Marvel or Star Trek they still make enough to last till the last day almost there's enough stock for everyone with some stuff already sold out of course

    I was in on the preorder, pretty much like everyone is saying, I had the figure, then several hours later I didn’t. They canceled my order and refunded my money. But I went into it with full expectation that wasn’t going to get one anyway, because I usually never do. But wether this was originally a SDCC or Powercon exclusive and now it isn’t for whatever reason, Mattel has really been dropping the ball with this origins line. Just my opinion, but I believe Mattel has to many irons in the fire with just one of their franchises. They’ve got Motu origins, revelations/masterverse, and the CGI version selling simultaneously.

    I’m only collecting origins and buying the cgi figures for my son. I usually only get He man and Skeletor from every line(except vintage ones when I was a kid, had quite a few)but origins just unlocked that nostalgia in me like it did in most collectors. Loving them both but it’s getting really frustrating and stressful to collect origins, especially. So difficult to obtain some of these characters. I’m still holding out on trap jaw and tri klops coming out with a good variant or being rereleased since I just started collecting them last December. Can’t justify paying $100 for figures that especially only came out two years ago! I had no issues obtaining some of the older waves, plenty out there for reasonable prices, even reseller prices. But these two need a re release of some sort. If wave 3 got a second go round, I’m pretty sure it can be done for others.
    I just don’t think Mattel is doing a good job at getting this line in the hands of those who really want them, imo. Collecting shouldn’t be stressful, it should be fun. I understand what goes into selling these and who their targets are, but store exclusives or creations exclusives that sell out too fast or never reach most stores are making me give up on the line.
    Great videos as always, I’ve been binge watching the classics documentary playlist like crazy lol. I’m a huge fan of motu but learning a lot that I did not know from your videos.

    there's NO reason for doing exclusives in this manner imo. They should either go the S7 made-to-order preorder route or do general preorders the way they're doing with the mainline origins stuff so that everyone can get what they want. creating artificial scarcity for your own products and pissing off your fanbase is just asinine.

    • @yauyuso
      @yauyuso 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I can speak for the Wun Dar case specifically, toy exclusives has always existed. Reason is pretty much like souvenirs when you're traveling. So when you attend a Comic-Con or some kind of event there is some kind of exclusive figure you can purchase.
      How that twist into MoneyGram thing is more about how fans perceived it and with money to spare. And also just the modern technology of communication.
      Back in the day you wouldn't know about exclusives unless you subscribe to a toy magazine or something in the community.
      As for pre-orders. Mattel did started that with Matty and totally Matty-ed the fans. Not sure if you remember.

    When I buy cinema tickets I am given a five minute reservation on the seat selection to allow me time to get all my details in. So the extra "Wonderbread" He-Man figures were sent to grocery stores for promotions? Interesting...
    Maybe the guy giving out the He-Man figures just happened to be at some of the stores at the same time as a Wonderbread representative. People would have walked out of the store with a He-Man and a free sample of Wonderbread and erroneously thought they were part of the same promotion--hence the start of the Wonderbread rumor.
    Kinda makes you wonder... (yes, pun intended)

    Makes sense. What boggles my mind is waiting in the the queue saying the item is available, clicking the checkout button saying the item is available, clicking the pay now button, and the item is sold out. What was the queue for? Then re-listing Wun-Dar an hour later. Then sometime within the next 24 hours (I am not totally clear on the timeframe), start cancelling pre-orders. What happened? Scenarios similar to this seem to happen fairly consistently, and not just Mattel. I can understand why people are frustrated when they sit and wait at the scheduled time, only to have some kind of hiccup, and the product is not available. 🤷‍♂️ Collector's life.

    This happened before with Scareglow from the Revelations toyline. In today's greedy I'm first/ sometimes bot infused market, that's set aid those who intend on buying quantity, its even harder for normal consumers to get their desired sacrificing an arm and a leg... Even being forced to buy from scalpers on EBay. Personally, I was victim of 'The Bot Buyouts' at checkout! I had to get on the phone, conduct emails and kept on Mattel for nearly 3 months- til they sent me that Scareglow( I wasn't paying $75-$150). However, this was alot of work for 1 toy...and not everyone has that kind of time. So I'm hoping like Scgareglow, Wun-Daar gets rereleased for everyone to enjoy.

    I also thought Wun-Dar was announced (some time ago) as an exclusive on Mattel Creations. What I don't understand is why they don't do pre-orders for these figures so a proper quantity can be produced. The Four Horsemen allow about a month for people to pre-order their figures. The "ultimate" He-Man from Mondo was available to pre-order for 24 hours (still too short of a time period, in my opinion). If they can sell more of them, why wouldn't they want to do that?

    • @yauyuso
      @yauyuso 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mattel logic is they have to find ways to piss off fans.
      I have a theory that Mattel is running by idiots.
      That being said under normal logic. Pre-orders are hassle because it's not necessary.
      Say for a Wun Dar figure which Scott mentioned is a repaint and very cheap to make Mattel can just go ahead and order into production say 5,000 as a minimum quota. And they can add the number based on what their estimate sales would be.
      It's like a giant castle grayskull that's expensive then they probably have to do a pre-order to make sure they actually have that sales numbers before they go into production cuz otherwise they'll lose a lot of money.
      There are companies like Super 7 that I think with their licensing agreement they have made to order figures. So preorder is their thing.
      Mondo is Mondo. They are a company that makes overpriced figures so they have to make sure people don't regret and escape with money

      There was a WWE arena set last year done as a crowd funder with three tiers of what would get produced based on pre orders. Minimum order quantity makes that unviable. For simplicity's sake, let's say a manufacturer requires you to purchase figures in quantities of 500. If you get 506 orders, you're obligated to purchase another 494 figures that you have to off-load somehow, or refund those last 6 people. One of these is a lot less expensive than the other.

    Just curious why you think Mattel cant mimic Mondo's business model? For example, the recent 24 hour preorder period for Mondo's newest He-Man release. Considering this product is highly detailed and made of expensive new tooling, opposed to mattel creations Wundar which is little more than a repaint and heavily uses existing tooling, it would seem to me that it would have been a wiser business decision to take preorders months ahead of time than to once again frustrate customers over a less than 3 minute opportunity to buy a limited pre-made product. I dont expect you to be critical of companies you may consider to be a potential future emploment opportunity or to be a big advocate for fans or customers, but i would think you could at least be a little more honest about the unneccesary frustration these companies are putting their customers through. In my opinion, this business practice will inevitably negatively affect, the company, the hobby, and the IP, not to mention the credibility of those such as yourself who defend or make excuses for such practices

  • @yauyuso

    Scott, after watching your video still doesn't explain the real reason why Wun Dar sold out. Its Mattel! This is nothing surprising with Mattel. Its almost a Mattel motto, "Got to find ways to piss off fans".
    You can say the figure was originally a SDCC exclusive but that doesn't explain why it's sold out right away or has a small production run. Look at other companies during the pandemic last year when they sold their exclusives online there was a good amount of numbers for the fans despite how limited it is. People actually have a chance.
    Even attending the Comic-Con itself Mattel exclusive usually sold out really fast and it's not because it's a lot better than what other companies are making that's never the case. Mattel just make smaller numbers to piss off the fans.
    As a toy company I don't see why Mattel can't do what other companies are doing just make a good amount of the Comic-Con exclusives sell them at the convention so that everyone attending during those four days would actually have a chance to purchase and if there's any leftover stall put them up online for people that's not as fortunate to be able to make it to San Diego. Maybe if a slightly different packaging or something like that or minus an exclusive pen/pin or t-shirt or something like that.
    There's got to be a certain pride or satisfaction coming from the Mattel higher-ups knowing that they created a new term (Matty) to describe how bad they would screw their customers.

      @@ytrefugee113 I mean I understand. To be fair Scott work at Mattel for a long time and gotten a lot of opportunities.
      Even though there are jobs that I left that I am still grateful for them for giving me the opportunities.
      And perhaps that's the thing there are things that working in the company that Scott sees and we don't.
      Also the other way around sometimes what's happening doesn't necessarily reflect how customers feel about it.
      For example I understand Mattel wants to make sure Comic-Con attendees are rewarded for attending and have exclusives for them available. But there are ways that you can ensure the convention exclusives are special and also be fair to people that cant attend. Like Hasbro has been doing.

    Hey at least Mattel released Pig Head at retail. That should be a big seller. So stupid. I Wun-Dar if Mattel will regret this decision. I know it has affected my decision to collect MOTU especially the origins line. I will just buy vintage.

    Look why can't they just make him an Amazon exclusive or something and Mass produce him. You know I want him and everyone else so why can't we have him it's 2022 damn it. He's just an easy repaint it's not that hard it won't cost that much to reproduce.

      They could, but last years team made him for sdcc and this years team sold him direct ignoring or changing the original plan

    This sucked. It went out of stock as soon as I was checking out of my cart, lol. Especially sucks, coz Mattel really stepped their game up with Flying Fists and Terror Claws, which geuinnely felt like upgrades to their vintage ounterparts.

    exclusives, the end of a collecting hobby. It was a terrible idea 20 years ago and it has become worse.
