When he heard Janis' recording, Kris said it was his favorite and that this was what he had imagined the song to sound like. Janis was in the wave of artists benefiting from Dylan making music more about meaning and feeling. So at the time, this recording was almost revolutionary. Janis was never about her vocal ability, but about her energy, rawness, and emotion. This recording was the voice of a generation for reasons that transcend musical ability. It was the combination of songwriting and sheer emotion that spoke for a whole lot of people who wanted to be heard, even if for no other reason than to simply be heard.

Some of the greatest, most soulful singers' voices "crack" during performances that are absolutely incredible! That is actually part of the *soul* in those performances-- the singers are so into it, feeling what they are singing so deeply, that their voices can crack, and they don't care about it, and not only does it not negatively affect the performances, it actually *enhances* them. One of the best examples of this is Merry Clayton's searing vocal attack in the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter."

Was assigned to teach at west point but left army to peruse songwriting. His family disowned him. Did lots of odd jobs was working as a janitor at Columbia when he met June carter cash. He gave her a demo to give to Johnny cash but he put it to the side. After several attempts he rented a helicopter on Johnny Cash's front lawn to get his attention.
I love Bonnie Raitt! Listen to "Angel From Montgomery", although she can make anything sound great! She is also on Rolling Stone Magazines list of top 100 guitarists and top 100 singers of all time. She is one impressive lady!

Its 60's era folk music. Not quite rock, not quite country, not quite jazz or R&B but a blend of any of them. Usually with fairly simple accompaniment.
I enjoy watching you guys! Janis Joplin is a legend. A talented lyricist/songwriter as well. She is the embodiment of Rock and Roll, all soul, a lot a blues and with some country too. Her range is only obvious in her body of work; impossible to hear it from just this Bobby track. George’s final comments about Joplin’s performances were right on the money. Piece of My Heart is one of those songs that is always in my playlist. I still remember the entire family sitting around our b/w TV screen watching her perform. Her performances were an event. Her death, along with Morrison and Hendrix, was shocking and heartbreaking. Janis Joplin's had such a soulful voice, very distinctive. she died to soon. piece of my heart was one of her very best. she has other songs. i've always loved to listen to distinctive voices in music, the ones that aren't like the other cookie cutter voices. from Soul Music which has it's deep roots in almost all gender of music, from Soul, to R & B, Motowns , Rock, Country Rock, especially Southern Rock and rooted solid to traditional Country Music. music has been therapy for my mind, heart and soul. wouldn't want or care to live without it.
That fusion of Country and Soul was really nice and the way the tempo transitioned into a bit faster one later into the song reminded me of Tina Turner Proud Mary and how that song started slow and then proceeded to build up and up and up. The writing was well done and for Janis to really project that feeling on the track was executed to the T. Helluva nice reaction to this country joint Lost In Vegas.
She was pretty heavy into her drug use at the time too. Listen to Pink's cover. She's the only one that can truly do justice to Janis Joplin but she has the depth and range in her voice that y'all were talking about. As far as Kris Kristofferson goes, there's nothing he hasn't done. He tried to get noticed by Johnny Cash and couldn't so one day he landed on Johnny & June's property up beside their cabin and he gave Johnny a cassette tape of songs. He and Willie are the only 2 Highway Men left, I think. There's a great clip of him and Barbara Striesand from the movie "A Star is Born". There are a lot of clips, but this one is just her playing piano and he's singing her song.
I agree about Pink's version being great. Brandi Carlile also does a fantastic cover of it. Kris Kristofferson actually starred in one of Brandi's videos for her song "That Wasn't Me", sang "Turpentine" on her tribute album and stated that he really hasn't gotten into someone else's music like he has Brandi's since Janis and that he thinks Brandi may be an even better singer. She's also known for her voice cracking like it does on "The Story".
Margo Price's version she does at her live shows is the only one who even coming close to touching Janis' rendition IMO. I was blown away when she closed with it last summer.

She is good friends with fellow musicians The Avett Brothers (who are amazing and wonderful human beings as well as musicians and songwriters). She even commissioned Scott Avett to paint her portrait for her most recent album. The co- founder of, and elder brother in, The Avett Brothers, he is also an accomplished visual fine artist. For depth, I suggest No Hard Feelings (which LiV reacted to and that is how I found them !) and Through My Prayers. Their songwriting is lovely and I have called them Modern Day Renaissance Men since becoming a fan about 10 years ago ...

One of the things I remember (i think , but maybe I'm wrong) is that during her time, MANY said that if you just listened to her and didn't see her, you'd think she was a black woman singing. Janis was a Heroine addict, she played with 3 different bands, cosmic blues band, big brother and the holding company, and full tilt boogie. She didn't die from a heroine overdose, she died from a drug that was supposed to get you off of heroine. These songs were mainstream, listen to Summertime, and Ball and Chain that will really show how she stretched her voice. Plus Mercedes Benz, what a good little tune.
This was during the Woodstock, Hendrix, The Doors, Bob Dylan era of music, oh.. and Vietnam. I'm not a big Joplin fan, but she was a hugely influential artist to a point it is hard to measure.
Fun fact: The name "Bobby McGee" was inspired by a woman named Bobby McKee, who was the secretary for hit songwriter Boudleaux Bryant ("All I Have To Do Is Dream", "Wake Up Little Susie", "Love Hurts" etc) Fred Foster of Monument Records told Kris Kristofferson he should use her name in a song. So, he wrote "Me and Bobby McGee".
They often can’t- if they break it up they have a better chance of not getting copyright striked. Because then they truly can say it’s fair use and commentary, instead of just listening to the song all the way through. I get it’s annoying- I love this song, and I wanted to hear all of it! But that just means I’ll have to go listen to the full version.

Modern production has made people expect perfection. Artists like Joplin, Hendrix and Dylan would be written off today.
Joplin, Cornell, Mick Jagger, Cobain....all known for amazing vocals. All very crackling voices.

I'm a huge fan of Janis. She's actually from right here in Texas. This song was just as huge if not bigger than piece of my heart. But it's the songs that aren't as popular that are the greatest. Cause she sang with so much emotion and soul. She's definitely worth digging deeper into. Can't wait to see y'alls reaction.

Janis Joplin is a legend. A talented lyricist/songwriter as well. She is the embodiment of Rock and Roll, all soul, a lot a blues and with some country too. Her range is only obvious in her body of work; impossible to hear it from just this Bobby track. As others have suggested, do listen to "Mercedes Benz", "A little piece of My Heart" and "Try", or "Get it While You Can".
A piece of her heart is literally left on every stage she has ever performed on; a movie on her life and influence is 20 year overdue!

Classic. Country isnt my thing but this joint nice. She just has a way. So much soul and passion, especially at the end where she and the band go off. Passed too soon indeed. Not many people can convey emotion and depth like she does, even when her voice falters. It feels gooood nonetheless.

George’s final comments about Joplin’s performances were right on the money. Piece of My Heart is one of those songs that is always in my playlist. I still remember the entire family sitting around our b/w TV screen watching her perform. Her performances were an event. Her death, along with Morrison and Hendrix, was shocking and heartbreaking. Who knew that America would be trapped in a drug epidemic now? 😢
I'm a massive Tool and prog rock fan but Janis Joplin is my all time favorite female vocalist because I can hear her soul when she sings. Although, Etta James isn't too far behind her in my book.

She was bullied in high school. Drugs were her Achilles heal. She left Frisco and went home. Folks came to Texas to talk her in going back. She said she would if they promised to help her stay away from drugs. She knew she was vulnerable. They let her down. She was on Dick Cavett show a couple times. Great interviews

Oh Angels... Some of the best singers are not technically good singers. Watch her performance at Monterrey Pop Festival. It wasn't about technique. It was about FEELING. Janis wore her heart on her sleeve. Felt like you guys were a bit dismissive and your heart wasn't in it. And that's ashame. Ah well... we all have an off day. Still love you though.

Janis Joplin's had such a soulful voice, very distinctive. she died to soon. piece of my heart was one of her very best. she has other songs. i've always loved to listen to distinctive voices in music, the ones that aren't like the other cookie cutter voices. from Soul Music which has it's deep roots in almost all gender of music, from Soul, to R & B, Motowns , Rock, Country Rock, especially Southern Rock and rooted solid to traditional Country Music. music has been therapy for my mind, heart and soul. wouldn't want or care to live without it.
That fusion of Country and Soul was really nice and the way the tempo transitioned into a bit faster one later into the song reminded me of Tina Turner Proud Mary and how that song started slow and then proceeded to build up and up and up. The writing was well done and for Janis to really project that feeling on the track was executed to the T. Helluva nice reaction to this country joint Lost In Vegas.
Pink did a FABULOUS cover of this song! She’s got that same raspy, strong, warm voice and she makes it seem modern and yet relevant.
She was pretty heavy into her drug use at the time too. Listen to Pink's cover. She's the only one that can truly do justice to Janis Joplin but she has the depth and range in her voice that y'all were talking about. As far as Kris Kristofferson goes, there's nothing he hasn't done. He tried to get noticed by Johnny Cash and couldn't so one day he landed on Johnny & June's property up beside their cabin and he gave Johnny a cassette tape of songs. He and Willie are the only 2 Highway Men left, I think. There's a great clip of him and Barbara Striesand from the movie "A Star is Born". There are a lot of clips, but this one is just her playing piano and he's singing her song.
Melissa Etheridge also did a great cover piece of my heart. The only two singers that do Janis Justice.

I agree about Pink's version being great. Brandi Carlile also does a fantastic cover of it. Kris Kristofferson actually starred in one of Brandi's videos for her song "That Wasn't Me", sang "Turpentine" on her tribute album and stated that he really hasn't gotten into someone else's music like he has Brandi's since Janis and that he thinks Brandi may be an even better singer. She's also known for her voice cracking like it does on "The Story".
Margo Price's version she does at her live shows is the only one who even coming close to touching Janis' rendition IMO. I was blown away when she closed with it last summer.

She is good friends with fellow musicians The Avett Brothers (who are amazing and wonderful human beings as well as musicians and songwriters). She even commissioned Scott Avett to paint her portrait for her most recent album. The co- founder of, and elder brother in, The Avett Brothers, he is also an accomplished visual fine artist.
For depth, I suggest No Hard Feelings (which LiV reacted to and that is how I found them !) and Through My Prayers. Their songwriting is lovely and I have called them Modern Day Renaissance Men since becoming a fan about 10 years ago ...

It was her style guys. She was the ultimate hippie. I grew up listening to her. And this is one of my favorite songs she performed.
I thought you guys MIGHT comment on this, but maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly, so I'm wrong about it. I'm 65 (yes), and I vividly remember Joplin. One of the things I remember (i think , but maybe I'm wrong) is that during her time, MANY said that if you just listened to her and didn't see her, you'd think she was a black woman singing. So, am curious to hear if anyone else remembers that AND it they agree. ?

Janis was a Heroine addict, she played with 3 different bands, cosmic blues band, big brother and the holding company, and full tilt boogie. She didn't die from a heroine overdose, she died from a drug that was supposed to get you off of heroine. These songs were mainstream, listen to Summertime, and Ball and Chain that will really show how she stretched her voice. Plus Mercedes Benz, what a good little tune.

So, he wrote "Me and Bobby McGee".
