I have found that cacti may walk on the thin line between the size reduction of dormancy and root rot. Though I don't have frost, this happens for other reasons, sometimes even in summer. Many of the heavily spined species, like Echinocactus and Mammillaria appear quite normal but they don't grow at all in the summer. A gentle nudge is often enough to reveal that the once juicy cactus has become a hollow ball of thorns that detaches and rolls over like a tumbleweed. The thorns are often interlocked and hold-on to their original shape, appearing perfectly normal.

Yes, dragonfruit root stock never does well. I have some I need to re-graft.
I dislike dragon fruit in general for it's unacceptable levels of fussiness.
I tried growing dragon fruit cacti. I tried so hard but the cold and the summer heat killed them all. 😧

I enjoy your collection. I am in Cornwall (South West England) and our storms and rain were so bad this year I moved all of my cactus inside except my big opuntia which are planted outside in the ground. They have survived snow, gales, torrential rain and hail just fine! Do you have a reason why you dont keep your plants in the house? I put mine outside uncovered all summer and really miss them! In the winter I have had a couple of flooding and storm damaged green houses so I lost a couple of plants as well. I am most thrilled with the opuntia though it was a test but they all seem quite happy even though our average temperature for December was around 6c - they get barely any direct sunlight because of the low sun position. I am hoping for more flowers this year. Absolutely love your Zagarrae I have a smaller version but the same beautiful colour purple. I eagerly await the 3rd part!

I live in Phoenix AZ.... southwest desert landscape is everywhere...and to wit, most could care less!.... In my neighborhood you'll see a lot of half dead cacti overrun by burdensome Bermuda grass....to be fair though, the Bermuda grass really does suck, takes the fun out of everything... it'll take over And strangle anything it can!! And it's really really invasive!
@@davidschmidt270 We have palm trees growing in Cornwall, I have 1 in my garden along with a collection of Aloes so some Opuntia are fine. We have a different warmer climate to the rest of the UK but honestly I thought the rain would mush them. They seem ok with it though. I wouldn't be so brave as to put all of mine out - Opuntias are my favourite but the spineless versions seem more prone to rust fungus so they are inside with me. Luckily my husband isn't bothered by the 100s of cacti crowding our house over winter! I have always been fascinated by Arizona it's a true bucket list place for me to visit. I grew up in Egypt so am well used to desert environments although different to yours I do miss the dry air. We had 28 out of 31 days of December as rain and gales!

I grew up here in Phoenix but spent my High School yrs in Olympia WA...the high school was very liberal...there was Muslims and Asians everywhere and I liked it!!
So diverse! I asked one asian Muslim girl what Egypt was like, she said it was very hot, LOL, ....so when I came back to Phoenix in 05 I hated it, nothing green at all....what I can honestly say now is the desert has it's own beauty, it's just that you really have took because it's subtle...
Kudos to you having cacti everywhere....why not?.... But how do you deal with fungus gnats?
@@davidschmidt270 I don't have such a problem with gnats in our house over winter because I don't water the plants. It is too expensive to heat our house now all the time so it is pretty cold as well - I think average is about 12c inside. If I watered them they would never dry out! So I just give them the occasional dunk in a bucket of rainwater if they are looking like they need it and then they have to go in a particular place in the house that gets sunlight and is warmer in the day but that place is high demand! The fungus gnats I have had before when I had them inside all year (before I got brave enough to leave them outside in summer) I used those yellow sticky paper traps everywhere. I found all the soils and composts last year from shops were riddled with gnats and so I bought some carnivorous plants as well. Sun dews are a really beautiful plant. They glitter in the sunlight and shine the brightest red.

Not letting the soul be drenched I think is key!!
Also for me letting daddy long legs stay inside is also a good natural way as well...may I make a suggestion?? Try looking up Gary and Robbie's backyard gardening made simple! She's an older lady from Southern California and teaches gardening in buckets as well as making your own compost as well....we throw away food scraps that can be reused to make what us Gardener's call black Gold! ....I liked TH-cam channel a lot ...yeah I hear ya about not heating up the house...I live with my uncle and I don't hear up the house hear either.... I've also seen things on cheap ways to heat up the house using just candles...look into it on TH-cam as well.....sun reflecting material might help you get more sunlight you guy's get in the UK ..... I've been boiling water as a way to add a bit of heat in the house...

Dear Anna,
all Echinocereus reichenbachii forms and cultivars are extremely resistant to cold (to at least -12C, and many forms can survive freezing up to -25C), so it might be better/more natural to keep them outside. Also, Gymnocalycium bruchii is very frost resistant (to -15C, or lower for a short time) but needs to be protected from rain.

Always nice to see your collection and process. I grow most of those same cacti and albuca outdoors all year down to 28F low temps in Nor Cal except seedlings are in greenhouse. Those Astros look fun, especially the big ones. Stay warm and thanks for sharing.

Our local nursery had a load of grafted cacti that had dead stocks on them after the cold snap too. I've been clearing a few mushy Opuntias out of the polytunnel this weekend too 😨

Oh Ana, I'm sorry you lost some of your cactus!!! Don't know if that Rebutia will root. I had one that lost its dragon fruit stock. Tried to root it for about a year. They bloomed and everything, but never any roots until they finally dried up. Best of luck with it!! No buds on my mammillaria plumosa either. My uebelmannia pectinifera is in bud the first time in a few years!!! Most of your collection looks well!! Thanks for sharing Ana!!! I tried rooting the pups of the Rebutia heliosa before and was unsuccessful as well. I’m hoping this big one will have a different outcome. Anyway, I have a few more grafted. So I will take a chance on this one. Thanks, Clyde!
Oh my god im very sorry for your loss. I had a small rebutia rotting till now. And a mammillaria that got root loss i think. I dont understand why but it doesnt absorb water. It just kebt shrinkling until dried and died. I put my small collection indoors as for winter. Near the heaters.

I love your videos! I’m new to Las Vegas from the East Coast and have a few aloes growing outside along with my cacti and agave. I’ve been wrapping my aloes during cold weather. I live near the 215 and Revere and seem to be in an cold pocket as standing water freezes here when North Las Vegas Airport shows above freezing. Do you think I need to shelter succulents during direct sun during summer and freezing during winter?
Welcome to Las Vegas and its extreme weather conditions. 😉 But if you don’t like rain or snow, you’ve come to the right place. 😊😉 Some plants are able to withstand our winters unprotected but when in doubt, it is best to cover them. Aloes especially cannot take prolonged freeze. But winter is not so much a challenge here as summer is. Summer is when I lose a lot of plants due to extreme hot and dry weather over a period of 4-5 months. During summer, I use a 50% shade cloth on top of my cactus and succulents.
Hi Ana, what is your preferred brand of fertilizer for your cacti? I have the tomato fertilizer for the first two waterings and spring is around the corner here in SoCal
I have no preferred brand. But I do prefer the liquid type over the granular ones. With liquid fertilizer, I know and control when my cacti get fertilizfed. With slow-release granules, the effect sometimes takes many months.
Hello there! I also just lost a cactus a week ago. It was my 3 year old seedling from my first ever batch of cactus seedlings. I'm still hurt about it..but the echinopsis are lovely. I was wondering, where did you get the Foxy Lady one? My dog's name is actually Foxy Lady and I wanted to see if I could get one 'for her' 😂 like how perfect would that be?

Around 10 minutes you were taking off the rotted one...was wondering what caused it to rot?
Looked like it was rotting for months as the other one was totally hollow and dry inside. Could have started in summer time. Maybe it went summer dormant but I still watered it heavily back then.
I just discovered that my parodia is rotting but its still green on top. Im just going to see if it can reconstruct itself.
i’m currently in the hunt for every blue cacti imaginable! can you - or anyone reading this - suggest what blue cactus species i can get? (bonus point for other blue succulents, except echeveria and aeonium)
Pilosocereus azureus and Melocactus azureus is always a stunner. Relatively easier to find for sale, too. Myrtillocactus geometrizan, too. 🥰

I don’t have many Copiapoa. But I notice the few that I have likes direct morning sun. Sunlight increases their farina. They can tolerate high heat and flowers well when it is hot. But avoid too much direct sunlight as they May also burn especially when they are still young.
