  • In part 2 we play through the amp going through a few of it's settings and features.
The master volume mod was a much welcome addition to this beast and really helped in achieving some GREAT tones. It's not just about taming the volume, it's also about being able to control preamp and poweramp distortion as well as maintain clean headroom for more punch.
The pre-phase inverter master volume was installed using one of the speaker jack holes so no permanent modifications we made to the chassis or circuit board.

It would be sick to plug a guitar into this through a pair of 4x12's.

I wish I could be not that much of a bass player as you.

what cabinet would you recommend with this head?

A 70's 2x15 would sound killer. Also some modern 2x15's as well. The older SVT810's and the newer Heritage ones are really good as well. There was a point in time when they made an 810 that had heavier magnets and those are really cool but a little tough to get in and out of gigs.

This amp sounds great. Do you recall what tubes is was running in the pre-amp, all 12ax7 or did it have 12dw7's like 70's Ampegs?

I can't remember off the top of my head but I believe the amp did use some 12DW7's as well as a 6C4. There are a few component changes you can do to be able to use 12AX7's in those positions but I opted to leave that part of the circuit stock since it wasn't hard to locate new production 12DW7's. The 6C4 on the other hand is not made anymore but there are still plenty of NOS ones out there.
