    I'd like to see the NBA go back to San Diego, but having lost both the Rockets and the Clippers the NHL may be a more realistic goal. Although to be fair the whole deal with the Clippers was all about Donald Sterling wanting the Clippers in LA, didn't matter the support they had in SD, had he not owned them I think they may have stayed and possibly got a new arena by the mid to late 90s.

    • @joecostantino3684
      @joecostantino3684 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@scotttild Difference is Sterling never had any intention of keeping the Clippers in San Diego when he bought them, his plan all along was to move them to LA. The Spanos family at least made a go of it in San Diego ever since they gained full control of the Chargers back in 84 up until 2016. You are correct though in that the city did not make it easy to get a new stadium, I still remember that proposal they had to build downtown like 3 blocks east of Petco Park. Also Dean wanted a massive public handout that just wasn't going to happen.

    Very likely that it'll stay with the current tenants of the Pechanga Arena (AKA the San Diego Sports Arena) - those being the AHL's San Diego Gulls (a affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks), the MASL San Diego Sockers, the NLL's San Diego Seals, and the IFL's San Diego Strike Force. I really don't see either the NBA or NHL coming to San Diego anytime soon.
    Of interesting note - the reason there is affordable housing in the project is because in the past, the City of San Diego got sued for trying to redevelop the area before and lost because they failed to do a Environmental Impact Report AND ran afoul of a California State Law called the Surplus Land Act. So the City was basically forced to start over from scratch and put up basically period where there were several teams who put together bids to redevelop the area (which all of them were forcibly included with Affordable Housing to comply with State Law). In a unsurprising move - there is also another pending lawsuit from the same group who sued and won last time.
    All of which to say - they won't even break ground until 2025 at the earliest. So I wouldn't expect any Major League team to move there in the next 4 to 6 years.

    I'm happy about the money and investment, being that Stan Kronke is affiliated with the Denver Nuggets/ Colorado Avalanche. However it would seem that he intends to bring minor league investment to San Diego. This project looks like a glorified minor league project than an NBA/NHL-worthy arena anyway. I remember as a kid when the Lakers with Magic Johnson came to the old Sports Arena during the NBA preseason. Not sure what to make of this, but San Diegans should be ecstatic to have Kronke on board, but whatever he is up to I hope that he scraps the Midway project and starts from scratch. The arena looks like a tribute to Pringles chips. If they keep this North County hill billy design (totally corny) they should print the Pringles logo on the roof and seek an endorsement deal.

    Both the NBA and NHL will not allow a team owner with ownership of multiple franchises in their respective leagues. Stan owns the Nuggets and Avalanche. He will not move his teams from those markets to San Diego. This is going to be for a minor league team and more of a real estate development ... look at the units and arena capacity. You are all delusional if you think the NBA wants another California team in a failed market twice with the Rockets and Clippers. The Coyotes could move under a new ownership team if they are willing to pay rent to Stan... most likely won't happen. NBA is going to Seattle and Vegas. @@jasonhiedo Chargers and Clippers shouldn’t have never left San Diego from jump street. I believe that San Diego is going to get a NBA team over Mexico City because it’s a Latin city and Kroenke is going to build a new art of the art arena which will make San Diegans very electric about getting NBA team this time around. As for the Chargers sake LA fans aren’t feeling them like they do the Rams similar to the Lakers. Chargers belong in San Diego and I truly believe that they will reunite one day and gotta find the right person to build a new NFL arena in San Diego and hope the Spanos sell the team.

    I'm going to step up and say this. As a long time resident of San Diego, this is and won't happen. San Diegans couldn't get Spanos to keep the Chargers. The city won't support it and haven't supported the Chargers "plus" the citizens were duped by the voting process to keep the Chargers. The San Diego Arena (like the Long Beach Arena) needs to be torn down. No pro team will come to San Diego ... NONE! The people won't support another team.
