I agree. I have never heard of Celine Dion until this episode of David Letterman that I watched live completely blown away. Since then I've never heard her do a rendition that was as good as this one.
Her voice's impeccable, amazing and flawless. In the video she has a shy look in her eyes. When you see her now she is fierce, she kind of " owns the world" . When she stands on stage , you see Celine shining .
As her celebrity grew, focus shifted to conserving her voice and giving the crowd a show. I think she's focused very intently on the vocals here, which could easily be mistaken for shyness when compared to her flashier but less impressive more recent performances of the same tune.
The section from 2:50 to about 3:17 where she gets a little raspy is so unlike what we normally heard from her, especially on more "vegasy" versions. I love seeing that side of her, that power, that honesty! I listen to this every month or so!

Up until this (incredible) performance, most of the world only knew Celine could sing romantic love songs. This appearance on David Letterman was when everyone realized she could belt out a tune like her life depended on it, and it's absolutely effortless for her.

I don't really enjoy the "diva" style of music & all the vocal gymnastics & runs and I would never pay to sit through an entire concert, but there is no denying her amazing talent. I really love when she sings rock & roll or R&B - I remember seeing this performance when it was aired in '94 & I was completely knocked out --- it remains one of my very favorite performances on TV ... ever. Letterman had a great show & could really draw the talent --- everyone wanted to be on his show.

Mainstream music started going downhill from 200 and on. These last 5-7 years have been just appalling in general.. Real singers like Celine could do sooo many things and vocal acrobatics and raise your hair.
sanyrub I agree with most of what you say. I think music has been going downhill longer though. You are right to say that the vast majority of music now is appauling. Trouble is, talent is no longer required. Any handsome or pretty face will do. The rest they take care of with technology...shame!
