I have tried box stitch before. And I always run into the same problem my holes do not line up or one side ends up having one too many holes am I doing something wrong?
Very good point! Yes that's normal. In fact you will always get less stitching holes on one side because the perimeter of the bottom is smaller than the length of the stitching on the body and guess what: it has to be, well, unless you try to compensate the missing stitches on the bottom using a smaller sized pricking iron and do crazy calculation to avoid this issue.
I know it tends to be quite confusing and annoying at first, but no worries, there is a fix and here it is:
To solve this issue you will have to "cheat" by forming a normal stitch on one side (the side with too many holes) and go through the same hole twice on the other side (the side with missing holes) to compensate the missing stitch. The same trick needs to be used each times the issue is met during the course of the stitching.

The closer to the edge you make the holes, the less difference you get, :D
This may help. Two ways I approach it. One is that I start from the middle. When you tighten down the thread, each hole it gets moved over slightly each stich. So from the middle and you work outwards it will keep it lined up. Now extreme radius you may have to an extra hole on the inner side. Also I'll put a few lock stich every few inches in the lined up holes to keep the panels "honest" if u will. Issue is to much space between the single stich you will get a roll or crease. It drives me bananas. Just keep conscious of it and a penny nail can work as alightment pins.

This is a good tutorial for beginners, I haven't worked with leather for 20 years but did it for a living before. When doing box stitch I only use a marking wheel on the sleeve and diamond awl as I go. Be careful to stay perpendicular to the edge and the stitches will naturally fall closer together on the arcs of the base.

Very video, thanks, I usually finish the wrap around part first then mark the bottom shape from the finished wrap, cut the traced bottom a couple of millimetres inside the line for a perfect fit, have fun

Great woorkmanship! On damp leather you may also gently knock down the stitches, using a shoemakers hammer, in order to close the stitch holes around the thread. Also pecking the tip of the awl into a piece of bees wax, in between making each hole for the butt stitch, will make it pierce the leather with less resistance (thus reducing the deformation of it).
Really great videos! Thanks for making them. Sometimes it helps to bevel the edges that are going to be box stitched together at 45 degree angle so that when they come together they form a right angle. It looks like you set the bottom inside the wrap, so you didn’t need to bevel the edges.
Yep, exactly. I think I will do a video doing box stitch with the 45 degree angle edge bevelling technique
@@Theleathercraftacademy I've always done my box stitching by beveling the edges to 45 degrees. That brings both pieces to a nice (hopefully) sharp corner. I mark the stitches in the smaller piece and then pierce through to the outer. You still have to mentally visualize where the awl is supposed to exit.

great video!!! How do you ensure the number of holes in the bottom match the number you have in the bottom edge, since you used two different pricking irons?
Hello both pricking irons are #8. There are less stitch holes on the bottom, you've got to cheat a bit!

I use black rubber board when punching stitching holes. It is softer than the white nylon board, so it is save for stitching punch.
I use a thin cork mat to punch on which I put on top of my nylon block... the cork does get mangled eventually so I consider it sacrificial and replace when it starts to crumble...
A wooden cutting board (100 mm. birch wood, standing grain) would be the classic choice. In the shoe making workshop where I learned the trade we would scrape the surface of it once a week, using a sharp edged steel scrape. Then we would treat the scraped surface with a mix of equal parts of boiled and raw linnen seed oil, sparsly applied using a piece of cloth, and use the other (now dry) side of the cutting board the following week. (Edit: Note that a cloth damped with linnen seed oil may self ignite, e.g. if stored wrinkled up or in a plastic bag.)

Great video. I have just finished the butt stitching part of this project. It’s not bad. I have one issue though. The leather on the concave side of the flask is flat. It does not follow the concave shape of the flask. Did you achieve this by getting it wet? I could solve the problem with a bit of glue. But I would rather not use any glue at all.
I had some troubleputting holes through the side if the leather. Any tips? Also I want to do the stitching on the other side, without using a bottom piece. How to you get it flush without using adhesive? Thanks and great video.

To tell you the truth, you may be best to get the cheap end tools. You can then figure out what you do, what you need and what you need to upgrade! There is a lot you don't need but best to get used to the hobby first. Hope that helps ! I have been using scraps of leather to make things, so many things for treatment and dying are not needed

How do you make sure you have the exact same number of holes on the bottom piece as there are along the bottom of the main piece? And how do you insure that they line up with each other?

Thanks, in fact you will always get less stitching holes on one side, in my case on the bottom. When stitching at one point the holes will not be facing each others, you will need to form a normal stitch on one side and go through the same hole twice on the other side. Not sure whether it is very clear but it should make sense when you are facing this doing box stitching.
One word....Illustrator, if you are atleast begginer in it, you can adjust and make sewing holes on a line and just experiment. Just Made tiny project with baseball stitch and wanted to try this out, took me like a minute? to adjust holes and line up numbers.
I think I may have missed what you did between making the width of your leather greater than what was needed. I assume you remarked and cut the pieces in one movement to ensure they butted up perfectly?

Nice video. On the bottom, the box joint, does the stitching on the bottom piece have a different offset than the side piece? I woukd thing the side piece (at the bottom edge) would need twice the offset as the bottom pice to get the holes to align on the inside. If you see what I mean! :^)

One question: Do you pierce the leather straight through with the pricking iron for the box stitch? I have always tried to make the holes diagonally with an awl, which is a pain in the butt. It is difficult to get both sides to look perfect and it usually makes the glue get unstuck.
Hello, for the box stitch yes I did, the butt stitch you don't need to as the thread needs to go through the edge.

Cool, I have to try this method. I kind of stitch through one edge when i box stitch. Maybe it depends on the leather thickness if it is possible to punch the holes all the way beforehand.
I don't have an iron. Would a stitch groover work? Or does that remove to much leather?
Hi there ... I'd being tryng for long time to box stitch...
Right now I'm stuck in my 5th attempt to make a camera body case ... I failed every single time due to the shape of modern dslr's compared to the old cameras ... New ones are very curvy... And specialy at the bottom.
I have a question .. How to account for the difference in the radius between the two pieces... Considering the thikness of the leather and so on has being realy hard for me to achieve a descent finish.
Any help will be very much apreciated.

Did you use glue on the inside curve to make it stick to the flask or is the whole case removable?
I have glued the bottom to the flask, this not mandatory.

did you glue the concave side (of flask and leather) together?
No I didn't I have used veg tanned leather and have wet formed the leather on the flask. You can also glue if you prefer.
How do you match the stitching holes from the bottom of the flask to the bottom side of the flask
I have a seam down the center of my couch cushion that is 24" in length. The cushion is attached. How can I box stitch the seam? I have a leather awl (not speedy stitcher).

The answer to the question regarding hole numbers is this, when you handsew leather you mark the holes with the pricking iron or wheel and use the awl every single stitch without putting it down that's how a proper saddles does it you need to become adept at using the awl so as to keep the inside, side of the stitches spaced neatly

Ok yeah your amazing at stitching, but that is impossible for me, I would be using nails and screws then leaks grrrrrrrf, but your awesome
